The plot: Calendar Girls is about the women of the Rylstone Women's Institute in North Yorkshire. This Women's Group produces a calendar each year based around scenes of the Yorkshire dales. In 1999, one of the ladies husbands became ill with leukemia. He would say that if the ladies planted Sunflowers, he'd make sure he'd get better so he could see them. Unfortunately, he didn't pull through and in order to raise funds for Leukemia research the women decided to make an alternative calendar of themselves in the nude hoping to sell a few hundred copies around their villages. This calendar in fact became a worldwide sensation, out-selling even those of Britney Spears and Cindy Crawford.

Starring: Helen Mirren, Julie Walters, Linda Bassett, Ciarán Hinds, Penelope Wilton

Directed by Nigel Cole (Saving Grace)

Opens December 19 in limited release.

I cannot wait to see this film! After 'ROTK' and 'Big Fish', this is my most anticipated film of December. It looks charming, delightful, and fun. Can't wait to see it! http://www.joblo.com/forums/images/icons/icon14.gif

I wasn't interested in this, having not seen any advertising for it, but then I saw a couple of TV spots for it, and it actually looks good. Too bad it's PG-13 though, I was hoping we'd get to see the ladies go full frontal :D.

Hey you guys I just saw this today becuase frankly I had nothing else to do. I wasnt expecting to like this and wow was I surprised. This was a great film. Its funny, wise, and moving.

Now I know this is a slight film. Its about a lot of ordinary middle-aged people who did a really great and interesting thing for charity. Its not a film that is epic or telling you any earth-shattering ideals. Since this is a British film in American film terms this would be a popcorn film. But what a wonderfully made popcorn film. If more American films had a script this smart then I would be a lot happier.

What I really liked about this script was its subtelty. It was funny without being forced, and moving without being preachy. This knows what it is and does it with grace.

The performances also really helped. I didnt know half of these actresses but the chemistry between all of them practically jumped off the screen. Who know Helen Mirren along with anybody else were such natural comedians. Its not that they did anything overtly funny but they were incredibly sly and wonderfully natural. in fact these were some of the most naturalistic comedic performances Ive seen in a long time.

I had a few nitpicks here and there with a few early scenes not being developed enough but who cares this is a great and small film.

Schmoes go see this film!!!. Its not an epic. Its small light and subtle but so well done.

Its one of the best films of the year IMO

9/10
