I couldn't help but notice this Christmas, the sheer number of live DVDs hitting the shelves. Being a huge fan of live music i've been very tempted to spend a ridiculous amount of money.

I did buy the U2 Go Home, Live At Slane Castle DVD and it was money very well spent. Initially I wasn't as impressed as i've been with the Boston DVD. After a few viewings though it's risen in my estimation. It's a wonderful, impassioned performance made all the more poignant when you realise it was shot scant days after the death of Bono's father. The emotion is palpable throughout and the actual setting with the picturesque castle in the background serves to bolster the import of the performance. Many highlights exist throughout and I was overjoyed at finally owning a concert featuring a live version of All I Want Is You. It's one of the most beautiful love songs ever written and Bono dedicates it to his wife. I've never been a huge fan of Sunday Bloody Sunday but the live version on this DVD during wherein Bono takes the opportunity to rail against the sectarian violence in Ireland and specifically the tragic bombing at Omagh three years earlier induces multiple shivers up the spine. Bono is often accused by certain areas of the media of being guily of a certain falseness. Bullshit. The rage expressed during this performance of Sunday Bloody Sunday is pure and measured. All in all this DVD scores a solid 5/5 and is absolutely essential if you call yourself a fan of U2.

Other DVDs i've been looking at with some agitation are the new Rolling Stones release Four Licks (four DVDs worth of Stones), the recent Red Hot Chilli Peppers release (also at Slane Castle), the Bruce Springsteen - Live In Barcelona DVD and the Foo Fighters - Everywhere But Home. These all look quite magnificent and well worth the asking price. Damn!!! I can feel my credit card twitching.

Polydistortion...a few comments with regards to your post...

Good lists. I own most of your first list and most of what I don't own I intend to at some point.

As for the second list...

The two U2 gigs...particularly the Zoo TV Sydney one...absolutely require to be released along with their classic Under A Blood Red Sky performance.

i dont own that many live dvd's but the ones that i do and think are really good are

james-getting away with it live
it was filmed on their last ever tour at the manchester men arena,as as per usual they put on a great show.

oasis-live by the sea

filmed in blackpool in their very eary days, when for me they were at their best,i later saw them at a big outdoor event and was bitterly disapointed,so if you want to see them in a smaller more personal venue this might be your only chance.

STOP MAKING SENSE for me. Sheer musical brilliance.

U2: RATTLE AND HUM was a great one, as well.

Paul...

How's the performance at Blackpool. I still get horrific flashbacks to hearing some of Ian Brown's vocal performancs near to the end of the bands life. He sounded like an ape giving birth to a cactus.

he never was blessed with the voice of an angel but this is a good performance, musicly its near perfection i think they have remastered a lot of it and cleaned up the sound.the rendition of waterfall on it really does send shivers down the spine.but the weak link as always is browns voice he has fantastic stage presance but not the most powerful voice, but its defiantly one of his better night's.
