RiccochetShaw and I think that a politics board would be a neat thing to start up at JoBlo. Many threads have been closed due to schmoes' political opinions getting in the the way, and with the 2004 Election coming up shortly, I think it would be a fun addition to the boards. What does everyone else (and JoBlo) think of this idea?

Yes, I think it would be a good idea. As you said, countless threads have been closed due to schmoes needing to vent their political views. Having a forum for this would stop that from happening, and would probably get more traffic than any of the current "Hobby" forums. I think it's a good idea, but I can see why Jo might not like it. And If it can't be done, I could easily understand. But if it can be done, then great! :D

Good idea, I'd like to see rather more schmoes are going to go for Bush again or if they're going Democratic.
That might would be a good idea, if not for the fact that there is about a 5% chance that everyone would remain civil.

I don't know what rocks more:
The idea of a politics forum, or the fact that people are interested in politics.
Joblo - I too would like to be given the chance to discuss things in this topic. Really, the people who don't need to be posting there won't even venture there -- as it is with the sports forum, or what-not. This is perfect for the hobby forum, because, really -- politics IS just a hobby. Who here can say their lives aren't about movie?
Beside -- there have been many topics I have not started souley because it involved the politics of a movie, and I knew it would be impossible to keep it on the movie.

I think it would be fantastic if we had a politics forum...that would definitely make for some interesting reading. But I'm not sure how well the "respect" rule would fare in such a forum, people can get very passionate (and sometimes uncivil) when discussing politics. Such a forum would need much supervision. Don't know if Joblo would be up for that, I'm sure he'll let us know in a snap. Personally, I'd love a politics forum.

What Free and Morgana said. A politics forum would be terrific, but the truth is: after just a few hours, we'd be flinging crap at each other, calling each other names and breaking the rules.
And besides, this is supposed to be a cool, easy-going place. Since when can you be cool and easy-going while talking politics? ;)

Politics is a sure way to distroy romance:p
You just know the 1st utterance of the name Michael Moore would start the flaming (whoops! I said it. ;))
And at the moment everyone in UK politics is so lame I wouldn't mind seeing boris johnston as PM. At least that'd be interesting.

what what what???!!??
James and Jerk: That's a little unfair dont'cha think? To say that schmoes couldn't control themselves when discussing something is unfair. I'm sure that when this movie board was started people thought "Oh why add another movie forum to the net? There's tons here already, and they're just full of immature discussions packed with insults." Well that happens sometimes (no message board is perfect), but this forum has been running rather smoothly for 3+ years. Sure, some people would probably lose their cool and get themselves banned, but that means they were bad apples in the first place, and have no business to be here anyhow. To say "everyone will get banned" is incorrect and unfair. People have been banned from what they said in other hobby forums like the TV forum. And I'm sure we knew that would happen when they were added. But did anyone say "oh, but people are going to get themselves banned over what they say in this forum, so let's not have it" ? No. Just because a few schmoes can't play nice shouldn't ruin it for the rest of us.
Some people see Politics as something that can only be discussed with insults. Which IS NOT true. It's widely believed because it happens so often in real life. But it's the same with movies, really. If told a kid in my school "hey, the Fast and the Furious sucked", chances are he's going to respond "Dude you're stupid, you're opinion sucks." But on these boards it's harmony, and barely any one insults because they respect the rules. And I think schmoes will respect the rules in a politics forum also. And like I said above, if they don't respect the rules there, then they have no place in being here at all in the first place.

I'm a firm believer that there are two ways to ruin friendships:
1.) Discussion of religion
and
2.) Discussion of politics
Politics isn't a hobby persay in America, it's our democratic way of choosing how we live our life. We have a few schmoes who take their politics a little too seriously, and cap off on anyone who doesn't necessarily think or believe in the same self-righteous way as themselves.
Off-hand, I can name off The Viggo Mortensen thread, two horror story causes child suspension threads, and the rants about televising the NYC blackout, and the "RNC vets Regan drama before it even airs" that had to be closed down, or warned by Joblo, or another moderator. These all led to personal insults, including an outrageous flurry of Private Messages to my inbox because someone didn't like my figurative speech of saying that NYC with no electricity would be like Murder Capital Jr.
I do believe that great hostility would come with the politics forum, and the "schmoe-like atmosphere" would quickly deteriorate, and much respect would be lost. For everyone's entitled opinion, another schmoe would be quick to lambast and say "NUH UH! I GOT THIS USA TODAY LINK TO PROVE IT!", and so the war between opinion and news would spike.
And yes, there are many respectable schmoes out there who can deal with opinions, and(or) debate with them respectively, but the bad apples that belong on the IMDB boards would keep us from ever having that. Each and every time I've seen a political thread go up, it has to come right back down due to animosity and insults.
I'd hate to see some good schmoes leave or be outcasted after being called a moron, nazi, bigot, racist, sexist, stupid, fucking retard and told to "get a fucking clue" as I have, for stating opinion.

A forum like this would turn into chaos, but in a fun way.
Sure, why not?
I doubt Jo would want it, though.

Most people's politics come out in their posts anyway.
While I would LOVE a politics forum, it WILL NEVER happen here. Jo don't want it, period.
I don't see it happening. JoBlo expanding the boards to include hobbies was nice enough. But politics is pushing it.

A Politics forum would get too heated, as would a Religion forum, which I'm sure would come next. The existing Hobby forums don't clash with the rest of the site because books, music, sports, TV, and video games all classify as entertainment. They're extensions of pop culture. Political/religious discussions just don't belong here, and we'd probably lose a few dedicated schmoes due to certain issues being broached that are sensitive to those people.
I view Joblo.com as a blithe source of escapism. If discussions got too "heavy," it would become more difficult to get away from the rest of the world by visiting this site. Of course, I wouldn't have to visit a Politics forum myself, and I don't mean to ejaculate on anyone's snack cake if I'm in the minority, but I feel that it would sap some of the fun out of this place.

A politics forum?
on the day that happens, satan will be going to work in a snowplough.
must as i do love to argue on issues of personal politics and religion and such like, this really isnt the place for it.
of course, that decision isnt mine to make, but if it does come about, i'd be shocked. theres just just to much potential for the whole kaboodle to blow up.

Fuck, no. Go to the IMDb Soapbox if you want to discuss politics, or to the countless other sites geared to heated real-world debate.

If we had a political forum, then us smart ass Schmoes wouldnt be able to use the term 'Dont get all political on me' because it wouldnt make sense then.
Please, let us stay smart asses, its all we have.

I would enjoy a Politics Forum.
I think that for the most part Schmoes would be able to keep things civilized.
I think it would be nice to have discussions about more serious topics with some of the same Schmoes who's opinions I have come to enjoy in the other forums.
I am guessing that Jo will be against this idea, but I hope he at least gives it a little consideration. (perhaps just for a trial basis).

I don't think it is. And that's because, even if I did try to control myself and stay poised, I'd be one of the first Schmoes to grab a sword and dive into battle as soon as someone says something that sounds half-assed to me. We know it's bad, we just can't help it.

Well, if the guys at Congress, the French Assemblée Nationale and the English Parliament can't even help themselves...why should 13-year old+ movie buffs? :)

Despite my best efforts, it often becomes that. I guess Tim Russert can't hold a candle to me. ;)
Seriously though, as fun an idea as it sounds to me (I love talking politics, love it), this is, after all, a movie board, and political threads get awfully touchy, and often lead to severe arguments and people saying things they later regret. Even the other forums we have on here (TV, books, etc.) are entertainment-related in some way. And unless you consider Rick Santorum and Ted Kennedy droning on during Senate Appropriations Committee hearings entertainment, it just doesn't belong. That's how I see it anyway
That said, if any other politically-minded Schmoes would like to get together and organize political chats outside of JoBlo.com, I wouldn't be averse to joining. :)

You know I notice we are now getting those slightly right wing 'terrorism forces us to make a choice' ad council banner ads on some pages- I'm not sure Michael Moore agrees with those ;) But anyway I digress; I think if we are getting ads that are political in nature on the site there should be a forum to debate the issues surrounding them- no?
Ah well just my 2 cents.

No it's just I spent all of yesterday reading 'Dude, where's my country' and am therefore a little paranoid!
I dunno I still believe I have a case here, but as my grandmother used to say 'he who pays the the piper calls the tune', so it is up tae Joblo, but I would be in favour of it.

Politics divide us. Porn and alcohol bring us together.
So I suggest either a porn forum or a "mixed drink" forum where we can share our recipes with each other. New Years is here and I need some new ideas.

I think it sounds like a good idea, though it may cause many-a-careless schmoe to get themselves banned. Just as long as no one take it too seriously, there should be no problems.
A mixed drinks forum? All I can see in that future is pointless ramblings, poor spelling and grammar, and drunken slurs...good times! :D
