For our big research paper this year in school, we get to choose a topic, and my topic is Title IX and its Effect on College Sports. So, I was wondering what the schmoes thought of this sometimes-controversial law passed in 1972 that allowed women to have equal opportunity with men, and get the same amount of funding for programs.
Personally I think the law is great, except when men's programs get cut in order for colleges to comply with the law's standards...

I think sports should be self supporting.
The government can't mandate interest in a sport. If 200 people show up to watch a women's basketball game, and 20,000 people show up to watch a men's game, I think that speaks volumes about fan interest. A men's football program can generate millions of dollars for a school. Women's field hockey COSTS schools money to run.
Sad but true.

I don't like the idea of men's sports being cut, but I do think women should have as many opportunities to play. My degree is in this area and it is constantly being looked at. The law makes colleges have an equal amount of sports between the two. So if a college adds a weight lifting team, then they must add another sport for women. It's a good idea and I support it, but there must be another way to keep from cutting back on mens sports.
