Just a clerification.

SPOILERS

-Carlo had Sonny killed right? He had it set up, yes?

-At the end, did they kill Sally, or not?

Also, what happened to Tom in GFIII? He just vanished, as far as I know, he was with the family in the end of the second one/.

***********SPOILERS FOR GODFATHER 1 AND 3***********

-Yes, Carlo set up Sonny to be killed in the causeway.

-Salvatore? Yes. Since he was the one who'd set up Michael, he deserved to be punished. They lead him offscreen, where it's fairly obvious he'd die.

-Tom "died of a heart attack" before the 3rd movie started, and only referred to in a throwaway line at the party in the beginning of the movie. They refer to his passing, and don't mention it. DuVall wouldn't return, so instead of recasting, they killed his character off. Like Clemenza in Godfather 2

1. Yes, as revenge for Sonny beating his ass and making him cry like a little schoolgirl.

2. It's strongly implied.

3. It would've been cool if they'd said he was in the Senate. I don't remember them giving an explaination.

EDIT: Thanks for the clarification on #3, Scarface.

SPOILERS

Actually I believe that Carlo was just a pawn in the murder of Sonny. It wasnt as if he set the whole thing up himself. He was probably paid by Sollozzo.

And Duvall said he wouldnt come back to do part III because they would pay him enough.

Actually it was Barzini who paid Carlo to set Sonny up. Carlo tells Michael this himself at the end of the film before Michael kills him.

Damn, there was a complex plot behind that, but it's been a while since I've seen it. I'm racking my brain right now trying to think of the exact reason. I think at the end after Micheal rubbed out all his foes and was interrogating Carlo he admitted it was the mob boss Barzini that had approached him about turning on Sonny. I can't think of the exact reason behind it though. Mabye he was trying to take over the family after the Don was shot and Sonny was acting boss. Maybe it was retalliation for killing his business partner Solozzo.

Extended Godfather Plot Explanation

**********MAJOR SPOILERS AHEAD**********

O.k. let's start at the beginning. Solozzo was not a member of the mafia, just a big time drug kingpin that needed the mob's permission and protection to operate in NYC. Vito being head of the most powerful of the New York families was head of the "commission". That being a board of directors type seat on overseeing all mob business, even that of other families. When he was approached by Solozzo about the drug trade and rejected the idea, the other families had to watch themselves with this as well. Mob boss Barzini saw all the money that could be made of off it and decided to assasinate Vito and eliminate the problem. Sonny then became acting boss although Vito didn't die, he was just incapacitated for a long while.

Sonny knew Solozzo was involved with the attempt on the old man's life and decided to have him rubbed out, which he did using MIcheal to do it. That still left the question as to who he was partnered with, which no one knew. Barzini knew he then had to get rid of Sonny and approached Carlo because he was his brother in law. He most likely promised Carlo some sort of high ranking position in his own family after Sonny was gone and he could in effect take over the weakened Corleones and become the main boss himself. What no one expected though was that Micheal would take the reigns and become even more powerful than his old man.

This is why at the end he killed off everyone. He was just being cautious because he still wasn't for sure who had approached Carlo about having Sonny killed. Then after Carlo admitted it was Barzini he was a dead man, the only thing keeping him alive was the doubt.

**********END SPOILERS**********

Well I probably left some stuff out, if you have any more questions let me know and I'll try to answer them the best I can.:)
