Opening with one of the lowest first week intakes was family adventure PETER PAN which took to the top with $1,507,592 (US $16,410,002). The film was also open an additional 3 days, which makes it slightly more disappointing, with it's 6 day total at $1,677,954 (US $18,264,377). Dropping 53% in its second week of release was last week's victor SCARY MOVIE 3 which added $1,426,676 to its total, which now sits at $5,531,747 (US $60,212,566), just under the halfway total to the original's film total. Still commanding in the Top 3 after 3 weeks, and only falling 21%, was Russell Crowe's MASTER AND COMMANDER which saw $1,392,226 added to its total, which comes to, so far, an impressive $8,194,157 (US $89,192,659. Setting itself up for an impressive run come it's national opening from Boxing Day, the ultimate romantic comedy LOVE ACTUALLY took in $1,137,595 on its second round of Advance Screenings. After two consecutive weeks at #4, the Hugh Grant/Keira Knightley feature has $1,910,434 (US $20,794,901. Not a bad total to have going in before your film has nationally opened. ELF, which I finally got around to seeing and enjoyed very much, is still bringing in the money with its 4th week, in which it rose 12%, totalling $6,292,231 (US $68,490,366). LOONEY TUNES: BACK IN ACTION crossed the AUS Million Dollar mark in its second week with the Brendan Fraser/Jenna Elfman flick managing $591,324, taking it to $1,685,451 (US $18,345,981). Golden Globe Nominee drama MYSTIC RIVER only dropped off 5% this week, its 5th, the lowest decline of the week, with $2,935,547 (US $31,953,164). Fellow Golden Globe Nominee, LOST IN TRANSLATION, in its second week of Advance Screenings, fared better than last week, over $60,000 better, with $145,478. Before it opens on Boxing Day, the Bill Murray/Scarlett Johannson will have $241,284 (US $2,626,354). Comedy outing THE SPANISH APARTMENT made a little splash at #12 with a combined total of $188,230 (US $2,048,866). Opening one week only for LOTR fans to catch up before Return Of The King-ing it, the extended edition of THE TWO TOWERS managed $66,184, an impressive $5,515 per screen. Returning to the IMAX screens was SANTA VS THE SNOWMAN 3D for the festive season with $45,470. The pic took to the charts last Christmas, and has managed $1,071,038 (US $11,658,151), very good for a film on 2 screens. Unable to capitalise on the original, poor sequel DUMB AND DUMBERER fell 59% in its second week with $43,368, taking its total to $215,235 (US $2,342,813). Flop much?
THIS WEEK (December 26th): Just like the two Boxing Day's before it, this week welcomes another, and the final, THE LORD OF THE RINGS installment; THE RETURN OF THE KING. Also on the agenda is romantic comedy loveactually featuring Hugh Grant, Colin Firth, Laura Linney, Keira Knightley, Emma Thompson and Liam Neeson. Lost In Translation is also set for release in national release, the Disney flick BROTHER BEAR will satisfy the youngens, whilst Nicole Kidman and Paul Bettany should get the Arthouse fans in seats with D O G \/ I L L E. Phew!
