NEW RINGS SETS BOX OFFICE RECORD
The final instalment in the Lord of the Rings trilogy set a new Australian opening day box office record, taking more than $5 million, the film's distributors said.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King opened on 453 screens across Australia, a spokeswoman for Village Roadshow Australia said.
Grossing $5,268,000 on its first day, "it definitely was the biggest opening day of all time in Australia," the spokeswoman said.
Fanatical hobbit, elf and wizard fans swamped cinemas throughout Australia.
Despite many cinemas holding hourly sessions there still were not enough seats for the armies of fans of Middle Earth who massed to see the film.
The three movies, directed by Peter Jackson in his native New Zealand, have broken box office records around the world.
The first two films took more than $2.4 billion worldwide at the box office alone, bringing in many millions more in DVDs and merchandise.
