Congratulations on the Carolina Panthers on winning their first NFC Championship. My heart goes out to the Philly fans...that's gotta be tough to watch three straight years. Philly had a good team this year and should be ashamed of nothing. Now we have the P.P. SuperBowl. I realize that New England will be the odds on favorite. But there have been suprises in the SuperBowl the last few years. I'll be the first to pick the underdog Panthers on winning the World Championship. Again, if the Pats can do it...I'll have to credit them as having one of the most impressive seasons in NFL history.
You have absolutely NO IDEA how awful these past 24 hours have been. Espeically to be living up in Patriots country, where everyone was celebrating victory today. I had the day off today, but I bet everyone will be rubbing it in during school tomorrow. For the third year in a row, we've made it to the NFC title game, just to come crashing down again because of poor play. I mean, at least the losses to St. Louis and Tampa Bay were too respectable teams. Who the fuck is a Panthers fan anyway! NO ONE! The game reminded me of the first game of the season against Tampa Bay. Philly looked absolutely horrible, the whole damn team except for Ducebag basically.
Donovan McNabb, after completing the heroic 4th-and-26 last week, played like a 3rd-string backup QB on the Lions. He got sacked, fumbled, threw bad passes, and threw THREE interceptions, including one right in the red zone. And the injury was the final straw. I knew it was over when Koy came into the game
But it's not entirely his fault. The Wide Receivers also blew it as much as McNabb did. As Joe Buck pointed out, the Eagles' leading WR was Ricky Manning. Thrash, Fred Ex, and Pinkston looked uninterested and must have had grease on their hands or something to have dropped all those passes. Especially Todd Pinkston. He was the Bill Buckner of the team on Sunday.
And the Defense! AAARGH! They cannot stop the big-name running back. They couldn't stop Green last week, and this week netiehr Davis nor Foster! They also seemed totally out of it. The refs are culpable as well. Not calling a penalty on that late hit by Carolina #53 to injure McNabb's ribs was completely unacceptable. Carolina got away with like 20 pass interferences as well.
The instant-replay rule also must be abolished. The refs overturned two questionable calls in Philly's favor two weeks in a row due to the crappy instant replay system. I still believe that the refs made the right call to begin with, and that both of those rulings should not have been overturned.
I guess I should be happy at how well they did the rest of the year, like my mom told me to. But it's so disappointing to have come so far, just to see it all crashing down again. I know how Red Sox and Bills fans feel now I guess. The Eagles are my favorite of all the Philly teams. I had high hopes for them this season as always. I believed in miracles... :(
Personally, the Pats-Panthers Super Bowl matchup is not very desirable to me, and I don't know if I can even bear to watch the game. I don't think the game will generate a lot of national interest, and it will be boring, as the Pats will easily defeat Carolina. I still am deciding which team to root for. It's like choosing the lesser of two evils.

I feel for you. Most Philly teams are my 2nd choice and I thought they could get there this year. I can tell ya that in my house there are some pissed off people because of that game.
Just blame Bobby Clarke for everything! :)
I'm not in the habit of spewing out angry shots at any team, but I'm just sick of the Patriots. The worst thing that could have happened in the AFC happened on Sunday. Yet another repeat trip to the SuperBowl. I'm also sick of hearing every Pats fan ram it down my throat how great they are. And I'm sick of the media heaping it on about how great Tom Brady is and how the Pats are unstoppable. (If anyone denies this, they haven't been paying attention to ESPN, Sports Illustrated the Sporting News, or any other form of sports media.) I've listened to it all season long. It truly nauseates me. My only hope is that the Panthers can accomplish one more miracle in two weeks. It could be the only thing that makes this SuperBowl worth watching.
That said, I need to make my pick.
SUPERBOWL XXXVIII
Houston, Texas
February 1, 2004
The Patriots are there again. It's their fourth SuperBowl ever and their third in seven years (apparently, my age was showing in a previous post). The Patriots offense competely shut down the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday. Peyton Manning looked frustrated as he was picked off four times. Then again, the Colt's defense wasn't having a good time in the snow either. The Patriots marched out and did their job. It was over before it began and now it looks like the Patriots are going to win it all one more time.
Then again, here come the heart attack cats. The Carolina Panthers made mincemeat out of Philadelphia's offense. This is Carolina's first appearance in the SuperBowl. Their last NFC Championship game pretty much ended quietly. Not so this time. 14-3 isn't a huge score, but it proves that the Panthers had what it takes to outgun the Eagles' offense and hold Donavan McNabb at bay. So can they do the same with Tom Brady and the New England offense?
The answer, sadly, is probably not. The Pats looked better than ever against arguably the best offense in the NFL. As with every Championship, the defense takes the game. After watching the New England defense pick apart Peyton Manning, it's safe to say that the New England defense is on fire. This makes fourteen consecutive wins for the Pats. On Sunday, fifteen is coming.
In a low-scoring defensive game, the Pats will earn their second ring.

as for the eagles, they are choke artists. the receivers suck, the backs did ok, the line did ok, and they were still only down by 11 pojts in the fourth.but what don mcnabb did was horrendous. he has played with A BROKEN ANKLE before, and bruised ribs took him out of THE NFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME. that was sickening. his team went to war for him and he left em in the fourth quarter. i had respect for him, but that is inexcuseable. look at mcnair, he sure as hell wouldn't have left the game, or any qb for that matter. his injury made have been nagging him, but it wasnt that bad. going tinto halftime he jogged off the field, and terry bradshaw said that if it was serious, there was no way he'd be jogging. so somethings up. all downhill from here for the eagles, and mcnabb is garbage. no sympathy, as they are over rated, especially mcnabb, who couldnt pull through when they needed him
bobajoe, i think the fans should be ashamed. they have been here three years now, with solid teams and they cant move ondue to their own uneven play. look at mcnabbs stats in the three games, 1td and i think 6 int's. they dont belong in anymore championship games, and the fans expected nothing less than a sb appearance. horrible disappintment, as they will lose players, and they are not getting any better, while other nfc teams like dallas, atlanta, washington, tb, gb, sf, seattle, minnesota and maybe even the bears and saints will leapfrog them.
strider, my raider fan bud, its no curse. its inconsistency and belkieving in your own overrated hype. looks like limbaugh may have been right, and it would probably be recognised as so if he didnt add that ignorant comment about race.
Although he sucked on Sunday, McNabb is still NOT overrated, and Rush Limbaugh STILL is a piece of white-trash shit. Look at what Donovan F. McNabb had to work with this year and the past 2 years for that matter. They were definitely a ragtag crew of WRs and RBs, no prime-time players like Marvin Harrison or Stephen Davis on the team. McNabb has no go-to guys on 3rd Down, no one who he can count on to make the big play. How could a QB be overrated if he has no one to work with and has led his team to 3 straight NFC Championship games? How can the Eagles be overrated? Is a QB overrated when he complete a 4th-and-26 pass late in the game? The Eagles have been the most consistent team these past 3-4 years. Most other teams' records have fluctuated; look at how the Bucs and Raiders did last year, and how Carolina was 1-15 2 years ago. Even though we can't win championships, we're still probably better than your favorite team.

But it's fair to say that New England hasn't played a team with the running game Carolina has in the playoffs either.
Carolina's game against Dallas was supposed to be close, then they weren't supposed to defeat either St. Louis or Philadelphia at the other teams stadium, and now the patriots are going into this game thinking they have it in the bag, just like St. Louis did 2 seasons ago when everyone thought they couldn't be defeated.
Yeah they have a good coach, so does Carolina, New England had a superbowl team in place 2 seasons ago to build on, Carolina was 1 - 15 2 seasons ago as everyone knows. I think Fox is obviously every bit as good as Bilk considering that and how the 2 teams play their games so consistently.
Say what you will about New England being a football machine, Carolina has been also when it's mattered most, through the playoffs. They're very much in the position New England was in 2 seasons ago.
That said, "there's a reason they play the game". How many times have we heard and lived that in sports?

I was just kind of wondering where all this hate is coming from toword the Patriots? Things may be different on the East Coast no doubt, but I don't really know anyone around here that despises them. To me they just seem like a down to earth blue collar team, I like that. Carolina too for that matter, I'm not going to be sad seeing either team win this one.
I guess both teams kind of remind me of my beloved Iowa Hawkeyes.:) Really the similarities are striking, that is why I like both teams. Not many flashy big name big salaried primadonna's. Both teams do it with defense, strong running games, excellent fundamentals and execution, and great coaching. It's funny Haddonfield mentioned the fact that Pats wanted to be introduced as a team in the last Super Bowl. Ever since 1990 when the Hawkeyes come out on the field they do "the swarm". Instead of running out individually they come out hand in hand in a big swarm of people, I've always thought that was extremely cool. Kind of a show of unity that is refreshing. It may not be a high scoring shootout, but it will very intense and should be a great game. I'm looking forward to it.:)
Leave it to me to sneak some college talk into this thread, I'm ashamed of myself, I just cant wait until next September.:D

I hardly hate the patriots myself, I'm for Carolina in this game but there's a lot of teams I don't care for more than the patriots. I don't really get the sense that everyone hates them from what I read on here.
I was definitley cheering for them 2 seasons ago against st. lous and I thought it was something else that it was the patriots on top after the season sep 11th happened.
Nothing wrong with the college football talk, it's the 2nd best level of football there is after high school.
And it brings up a good point, most people were so certain oklahoma couldn't be defeated going into their last 2 games, and they had been more dominating by far against their competition than the patriots have against theirs.
At least they have a playoff system in the nfl though.

You're right, sharkstank. It simply isn't possible to even remotely like the Patriots, if you're a Raiders fan. If you're a Raiders fan, you can do nothing but hate the Patriots. And that's pretty much how I feel about the Patriots. I am totally sick and tired of the Patriots, and all the media attention they're getting. I'm sick and tired of the media making them out to look like America and God is on their side. I'm sick and tired of the media saying how magnificent, incredible, and spectacular the Patriots. I'm sick and tired of the media calling the Patriots the "next dynasty".
If the Panthers could pull off one of the biggest upsets in SuperBowl history, and finally defeat the Patriots, that would be one of the greatest moments in NFL history. The Panthers appear to be a team of destiny, and I know they want that Lombardi trophy more than anyone can imagine.
I don't care what anyone says, the Panthers chances to win this game are good. They have a great defense, a good running game, and a solid QB. The Panthers are more than capable of defeating the Patriots once and for all. And I pray they do.......
Of course, if (heaven forbid) the Patriots were to win the game. I'll give them my reluctant congratulations, but I'll still be one pissed off NFL fan. And you know why? Because a Patriots victory at SuperBowl XXXVIII will turn the 2003 regular season and the postseason into something worthless and forgettable. And that's pretty much the last thing I want to see happen.....

I'm rather surprised by the hatred towards the Pats myself. It sounds like some people hate the Pats because they get a lot of media coverage... I live in the Northwest, but even if the Pats do get a lot of media coverage on the national level, to me they are still that team that is way, way, WAY on the other side of the country. They're almost exotic they're so far away.
The Pats definitely don't get much attention on a local level in my parts, the only thing that matters around here is the UofO Ducks. That's all you'll ever hear about on local sports news, and if one is a football fan, it's either of the Ducks or the Beavers. And good lord almighty...if people here happen to be into the NFL they're into the Detroit Lions only because Joey Harrington used to play for the UofO.:D:D I'm sure if Eugene (or the whole state of Oregon, for that matter) had a NFL team things would be different, but we're a college football town/state. So college sports coverage takes precedence. No overexposure to the Pats, no hatred of the Pats, I guess. GO PATS! :)

Let's hope not. It's not worth watching football if one team runs the table year after year. But I think you're getting ahead of yourself, if not outright making brazen assumptions that could be proven false in just a few months. Nobody owns this sport. Bill Belichik (sp.) is not God, and the Patriots are not this undefeatable dynasty. They can be beaten. It may not happen at the SuperBowl, but it sure as hell can happen on any Sunday afterward.

Both of the championship games were boring, IMO.
But Foster's TD run was incredibly fun to watch.

Hey, im just having a little fun here. ...I wonder if 989 Studios still plans to have "The Game Before The Game" during SuperBowl weekend. For the last 7 or 8 times, whoever has won the game has gone on to win the SuperBowl. I know streaks are made to end, but I think it might continue this year. I wasn't even aware that NFL GAMEDAY was still being made. Hope they don't switch to MADDEN NFL {Great game, but the "cover curse" could cross over to the game. LOL}

You're right, jeo. THAT team has made it to the SuperBowl a few times, and as a fan, I should be grateful for that. Alas, last year's crushing loss at SuperBowl XXXVII against the Bucs pretty much changed THAT team forever. I'm not sure if they will ever be the same again, but I'm hoping they will someday.
To be honest with you, jeo. I think your team has more hope than mine. All the Chiefs have to do is fix their defense, and they'll get into the SuperBowl for sure. As for the OTHER team, well, I'm just going to leave that topic alone until the 2004 season.... :D

Two important questions about......
SUPERBOWL XXXVIII
Question #1 - Will SuperBowl XXXVIII be a boring game?
Question #2 - Will SuperBowl XXXVIII draw in high ratings?
First off, the reason why I'm asking these questions is simply because they have been on mind since Sunday. Anyway, getting back to the questions. As for the first question, I'll have to answer with a very loud "No". I've discussed this SuperBowl with several individuals, and they believe it will be the worst and most lethargic SuperBowl since the Giants-Ravens game. However, I disagree completely. I think SuperBowl XXXVIII will be a solid and entertaining game because it will be a great defensive war between both teams. And this is without mentioning that you have some good matchups within the game itself. There's Bill Belichick against John Fox, Tom Brady against Jake Delhomme, and Ty Law against Ricky Manning. This will be a solid SuperBowl, no matter what the outcome of the game is.
As for the second question, I honestly don't think the ratings for SuperBowl XXXVIII will be that high. Don't get me wrong, the game will draw in good ratings, but it certainly won't be as high as previous SuperBowl's. I think the Eagles needed to defeat the Panthers and win the NFC Championship for the ratings for SuperBowl XXXVIII to be huge.
Ah, I'm so glad I got that out. I feel much better.... :D

Now to answer those two questions
1) I don't think it will be that boring of a game nothing could be more boring than Baltimore-Giants in 2000 the most boring superbowl ever. I think this will be exciting and as long as it is a close game going into the 4th QTR I think fans will take it as entertaining and this game may not have the best two teams offensively but they both can put up some points.
2) The obvious answer here will be yes because a lot of people tune in for the commercials and no doubt people always do.
RANT: And we get stuck with the stupid simulcast which screws us from seeing the damn commercials stupid fuckers.
A lot of football fans will tune in even those who are not a fan of these two teams which I'm not either.

Please forgive my obvious frustrated behavior on this thread today. You see, these piece-of-shit Canadian stations we have here, prefer to cash in on the Superbowl and for the last few years have been playing their own commercials during the game.
So, we don't get to see the cool commercials unless we got a satellite dish!
The ads are half the FUCKIN' FUN of the Superbowl in the first place!!!!!!!
So, like sheep, we have to wait 'til the next morning and catch those commercials on a news program or something. By then, even I don't give a shit anymore.
It sucks!

"Read my entire post. I want a run of 4-5 years like all the great football teams. I want this team and coaches to go down in history. and they will"
I read the entire post, and you said they never won anything and that this was their chance. A superbowl title in '02 is not "never winning anything".
As for their dynasty which hasn't happened yet, I wouldn't have much stock in it anymore, the nfl was much different when teams like san fran made history. Now you can be 1 - 15 1 season and in the superbowl 2 seasons later.
I know you want a run like that, but everyone else does to, it ain't gonna happen just cause you want it to.

anyway, the eagles have been consistent, but other teams have been too. the colts, THAT team (excluding last season they won 3 straight division titles) the titans, the packers, the rams, and the ravens have been consistent winners the past 3-4 years. granted the eagles have been to 3 straight conference title games, they havent won, so i still dub mcnabb a bit overrated.

as for the questions
#1
it will be a defensive struggle, but it wont be boring to a football fan. the the average viewer it may be, but i dont think so since it'll be a close game.
#2

As for the second question, I honestly don't think the ratings for SuperBowl XXXVIII will be that high. Don't get me wrong, the game will draw in good ratings, but it certainly won't be as high as previous SuperBowl's. I think the Eagles needed to defeat the Panthers and win the NFC Championship for the ratings for SuperBowl XXXVIII to be huge.Strider [/B] I dont really know that much about tv ratings and the complexities behind them, but I was just kind of wondering why you think it would have drawn better ratings with the Eagles? About the only marquee player they have is McNabb and they are about as far from being a flashy gilitzy team as the Panthers are. Is there that much more interest in Eagles? That many more fans? Maybe if there was a west coast or midwestern team instead of two east coast clubs more people would watch, but I doubt it. It will most likely be a defensive struggle, but I don't think that will keep viewers away. Even people that haven't watched a football game all year will watch because well, it's the Super Bowl.
This could lead into another rant about non-football fan know-it-alls who think they have all the answers, but another time.:D People like that drive me crazy around Super Bowl time.
Halftime show... nah I wont be watching. Maybe there will be a rerun of Gomer Pyle airing somewhere I can watch during halftime.:)

It's simple. I really do believe there would have been much more interest and excitement for this SuperBowl if the Eagles had won the NFC Championship. Not only do I think the Eagles have more fans than the Panthers, but I honestly think more people would be interested in an Eagles-Patriots. If the Eagles were going to the SuperBowl instead of the Panthers, I think there would be a lot of fans rooting and cheering for the Eagles on SuperBowl Sunday.
And let's face it.... Donovan McNabb vs. Tom Brady? Holy shit! I would pay to see that matchup, especially at the SuperBowl.
Just my 2 cents on the whole SuperBowl ratings scenario.... :D

Thank you, you are making my point. It is near impossible to have a run like the great teams did years ago because you are right, you can be 1-15 then in the playoffs, so when a team is able to have sucess for a few years now, its almost more difficult to do. If the Pats do win, its 2 in 3 years with the same club next year about a zillion draft picks too. The coaching staff are very smart and scouts know what they are doing, they had numerous injuries but because of there strong drafting, didnt miss a beat.
All that adds up to something special in my eyes. Only time will tell how good or bad these Pats are/become. But I will support them and be a pain in the arse the whole way. :) :D    :p
1. The Superbowl will be an absolute snorefest. I look for a very low scoring game with nothing explosive happening on field. Both offenses will move, but I think New England's will be a bit more productive. If Carolina can manage to slip by the Pats defense a couple of times and score, the game might be more interesting. I just don't see it happening.
2. The half time show looks to be simply awful. Kid rock isn't a terrible act, nor is Janet Jackson. However, I have no desire to watch this show. I just am not interested. However, my future girlfriend Angie Everhart will be in the lingerie bowl. Maybe I'll see if I can't sneak in on that action.
3. The SuperBowl will still garner big ratings, but I don't see any records being broken. The commercials are awesome and that's my main reason for watching right now. My heart goes out to you, Indiana.

Either that or rip off a Direct TV signal somewhere.
Yeah, that really sucks. If these networks had any sense, they'd have more deals world wide for the SuperBowl. At least you get to see the game.

That would definitley be something special even 2 super bowls in 3 seasons, but that would still be a long way to go to the dynasty you're writing about, draft picks and all. Lots of examples of teams that look very strong on paper with no results, tampa bay is the best example of late.
Carolina might put a quick end to New England's dynasty before it starts anyway.
But your enthusiasm and optimism for your team is commendable.http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/iy/76/37b52ba607c971e9553e42fae53dd1.gif

1. Yes it will be a close game, but low-scoring. Both teams are very evenly-matched. I still don't have my pick to win yet though. As I say every year, this will be the year the Super Bowl finally goes into overtime.
2. It will draw high ratings in my area (New England), but I think if the rest of the country could care less. Who the hell can call themselves a Panthers fan anyway? Who's out buying Delhomme and Davis jerseys in mass quantities? Not a lot of people...
3. I wish I could order the Lingerie Bowl on pay-per-view, because it looks like the halftime show will suck. So I'll be doing the same thing I do every year at halftime, shitting out all the chili beans I've devoured. :D

This news is futher proof why THAT team is going down all the way to hell itself. I can not believe that Al Davis is having this much of a damn hard time trying to find a head coach! But even though I would like to see the team with a coach eventually, I really don't want Turner or Payton. I'd actually wish Davis would hire Jim Fossel instead. Now, I don't think Fossel would co-exist very well with THAT team, but the man needs a fucking job! I don't believe how none of those 6 teams he conducted an interview with didn't hire him. I can just imagine Fossel right now, he's probably in one unbelievably profound state of depression..... ;)

That concludes the spamming section of my entry.
I'm not sure of the Raiders hiring of Turner. I think Davis must believe that Turner will be so grateful for a head coaching job that he'll sit back and let Davis have more control than he should at this point. Even Rick Neuheisal would have been a better hire in my opinion.

This is Bill Simmons' take on why the Pats will win the Super Bowl, and I pretty much agree with all of it.
HOUSTON -- Right now, it's pouring rain outside. When I write my book about Super Bowl XXXVIII, it's going to be called "Just Another Crappy Day in Houston!"
Anyway, something has been bothering me all week: Everyone down here thinks Carolina will give the Patriots a close game, possibly even winning outright. This seems to happen every time there's a mismatch on a paper, but the game seems just close enough that everyone has a good time talking themselves into the underdog. That's what happens when you have two weeks between Championship Weekend and the Super Bowl.
What drives me crazy is when people who should know their stuff casually dismiss the Pats. Like Chris Mortensen -- we were arguing in the ESPN makeshift offices today. He thinks that the Panthers can win. "Are you crazy?" I kept saying to him. "You've been covering football forever. You should know how these things work!"
Mort wouldn't budge. Apparently, he thought Carolina's performance over the past three weeks was much more impressive than New England's performance over the past four months. Which certainly makes sense.
Chat with the Sports Guy
Bill Simmons will chat on Friday at 10 a.m., ET, in The Show, live from the Super Bowl in Houston.
So let's talk about it -- logically, without even mentioning a single matchup. Just look at the two teams. To get here, the Panthers drew a mediocre Cowboys team, a comically coached Rams team, then a banged-up Eagles team that lost its best player in the second quarter. Just two months ago, they lost three consecutive games. Now they're a juggernaut because they emerged from a terrible conference?
Listening to this heresy the past few days, I don't know whether I want to argue with this people or encourage them. Please keep thinking this. Seriously. Maybe the line will dip below seven by game time. At this rate, I'll have HDTV, XM Radio and a 40-inch plasma TV by the end of the playoffs.
I'm saving my big pick for Friday -- you probably know where I'm headed. In the meantime, think about the Patriots and their 14-game winning streak. For some reason, this keeps getting overlooked. You would think a 14-game winning streak was hard to overlook. You would think.
Consider the following things:
The Pats lost their last game against the Redskins on Sept. 28. The baseball playoffs started two days later. Now, we're about three weeks away from pitchers and catchers reporting ... and they still haven't lost a game. Only one other team in the history of the league -- the '72 Dolphins -- has won more games in a row than New England. And nobody seems to be even mildly impressed by this.
Richard Seymour and the Pats defense have allowed just one 100-yard rusher this season.
Of those 14 victories, eight of them came against teams that won 10 games or more. The Panthers only played four teams with a winning record all season ... and they still lost five games! If this were the BCS, they would have been playing in the Galleryfurniture.com Bowl.
Looking back over these past four months, the best teams were the Pats, Titans, Eagles and Colts. They were the cream of the crop. And the Pats went 5-0 against those other three teams. Has that ever happened before?
During the duration of this streak -- 14 consecutive wins over nearly four months -- do you know how many times the Pats made the cover of Sports Illustrated? Zero. Not once. They were never favored by more than eight points in any of the 14 games. So why not continue to overlook them this week?
As amazing as this sounds, they still haven't played their best game. In none of those 14 wins did they slap together four top-notch quarters in a row. Seriously. Maybe the closest was the Buffalo game in Week 17.
The Pats defense has only allowed one 100-yard rusher all season. Sixteen of the 18 quarterbacks they played ended up with a lower QB rating then they had for the rest of the season. They also have the best coach in the league. And their starting QB has a record of 39-12. Apparently none of this matters.
Remember Tom Brady has already won a Super Bowl.
They're playing the fourth seed from the NFC ... and the NFC absolutely sucked this season. The disparity between the two conferences hasn't been this glaring since the early-'90s. Just look at what happened with that Packers-Seahawks-Vikings-Cowboys debacle in the past two weeks -- the Pack went from needing a miracle to make the playoffs to being everyone's sleeper in the span of 12 hours.
Anyway, if the Super Bowl has taught us anything, it's this: When the best team from a superior conference has two weeks to prepare for an upstart team from an inferior conference, the game usually gets out of hand early (see San Diego-San Fran, Denver-Atlanta, Baltimore-N.Y. Giants, Chicago-New England). Especially with a shaky QB on the inferior team involved.
For the team from the inferior conference, the Super Bowl feels like jumping from the All-Pro level to All-Madden. That's just a fact.
The Panthers lost three consecutive games less than two months ago. They also prevailed in three of the luckiest games of the season -- the fourth-and-10 to beat the Jags, the blocked extra point to beat the Bucs, and Jim Haslett's meltdown in New Orleans. Yeah, you need some luck ... but they were three plays away from being 8-8.
You could make a case that the Panthers are the weakest team that has ever made a Super Bowl (and if I had more time, I would). It's between them, the '95 Chargers and the '99 Falcons -- at least on my list. Has any team ever won a conference championship by having their QB throw three times in the second half of a relatively close game? Come on. You think John Fox took the ball out of Delhomme's hands because he wanted to rest him?
And with all of that said, here's the line for this week's game: Patriots by 7. And the majority of people like the Panthers.
Please tell me how any of this makes sense.
Benny

It's not so much that I'm not amazed and enthralled by the Patriots streak and penchant for winning, its just that I can't really stand them.
It's a long shot for the Panthers, but I want them to win. It also gives that gutsy "Underdog" feeling to root for them, and it should be fun doing so.
With the Patriots success, coaching, and loads of draft picks coming their way, they do look to be securing themselves a dynasty.

As has been quoted form the sports guy by Grebdron and others, you cannot argue with that insane winning streak. The Patriots beat all very tough teams, while the Patriots have beaten an overacchieving team (Cowboys), the dumbest coach this side of Wayne Fontes (the rams and Martz), and a superstar with no help at all (Eagles).
Throw in the Pats defense that has allowed only one 100 yard rusher all season and a defense that rattled King Peyton, you have to pick the Pats. If Peyton couldn't solve that defense, I'm thinking Delhomme (i wish I disliked the Panthers so I could bust out with the immature Delhomo call) can't do a whole hell of a lot to it. They simply cannot win by just running the ball.
I first predicted a 13-10 Patriot victory. My final prediction is 23-10. My prediction MVP will be Deion Branch.
I also predict that I willl want to do bodily harm to Deion Sanders within the first two hours of the pre game hoopla.
And the first person to be voted off Survivor after the Super Bowl will be that Susan bitch from the first season.

Quick Final Super Bowl Thoughts before the game tonight:
I HATE the Panthers!!! The Patriots-Eagles game would have been the ideal matchup in this year's Super Bowl. The Panthers have nowhere near as good of a year-long storyline as my Eagles did.
Once again, the Patriots will win, but in overtime. The Panthers will cover the 7-point spread, but Vinatieri will kick the winning field goal in OT and be named Super Bowl MVP.
Is anyone actually ordering the Lingerie Bowl at halftime? And if so can I come over and watch it? Damn you, pay-per-view!

Well for my final football prediction I like the Pats in this game and I think they will win it, and I will win $20 from my friend who is also the same person who bet me saying last year's Superbowl was going to be close and Oakland was going to win and I said Tamp was going to win by 2TDs and they won by like 28 or something.
AnywayI like The Pats to win this game and unlike last year this one will be closer than most people think I say 20-17 New England.
This should be enjoyable

14-10 for the Pats at this moment.

I couldn't believe my eyes. I was sitting there for like thitry seconds before I said to my dad did we just see Janet's boob. I'm thinking it was staged by that piercing or whatever that thing was on her nip.
As far as the actual game goes, it might just be the best Super Bowl I've seen. Tom Brady may indeed be the second coming of Joe Montana. I demand to know where this Tom Brady was at while he was at Michigan. I have my theories, but thats a rant for another day that will probably get me burnt on a cross at the 50 yd line of the Big House (frigging Lloyd Carr).
It's been stated before but this team is going to be truly scary in the years to come. Imagine if they only land a franchise back in the draft how much more dangerous they'll. But chances are with the way this teams has drafted they are going to unearth some real gems.
The Panthers had just as much right to win the game as the Patriots. They played the Pats pretty tough throughout. I was happy to see Kemp Rasmussen in one some special teams tackles. I played against him in high school. I think he planted me into the ground on a couple plays. I curious to see what they are going to do in the offseason. Foster not going to be happy with playing second fiddle for much longer. Julius Peppers needs to work on the strength some. He was being thrown all over the place on running plays.
Anyways it was a great night. My boy Tom Brady got his second MVP and superbowl. We got to see some celebrity boobs. I want a dog named Fergus. Kid Rock actually rocked. And survivor was pretty cool too. Now on to the draft.

Well, SuperBowl XXXVIII is officially over. And I'd first like to say that everyone and their grandmothers underestimated this game. Not only was this a great SuperBowl game, but it was an excellent defensive war between the Patriots and Panthers. This game came down to the wire, and honestly, I really think it could have gone either way. The game was that tight....
Anyway, I'm very disappointed that the Patriots won their 2nd SuperBowl tonight. I was really cheering for the Panthers to pull off the huge upset. And everyone here knows how I feel about the Patriots. Nevertheless, the Patriots did a great job today, and they played a great game. So, I have to relunctantly congratulate them on their amazing season and 2nd SuperBowl victory in 3 years. However, I am not looking forward to the Patriots=dynasty, Tom Brady=Joe Montana, Bill Belichick=Bill Parcells bitching that will definitely take place tomorrow....
But let's not forget the Panthers. Jake Delhomme, Stephen Davis, John Fox, and the rest of the team did a fantastic job in their very first SuperBowl. They could have won this game, but Fox's decisions to go for 2-point conversions and John Kasay's final kick proved to be costly mistakes. However, the Panthers have absolutely nothing to be ashamed of. From being 1-15 just 2 years ago, and then to get to the SuperBowl 2 years later is an impressive accomplishment. Today, in SuperBowl XXXVIII, the Carolina Panthers made a name for themselves, and that will never be forgotten.
Damn! I can't believe the NFL season is over already. It's going to be a long wait until the 2004 NFL season starts, and an even longer wait until SuperBowl XXXIX in Jacksonville. I'm not sure I can wait, but I will anyway.... :D
PapaJupe2k
02-02-2004, 12:42 AM
You aint kidding about Kasay's out of bounds kick, that was an atrociety. That was a Scott Norwood'esque blunder. I'm pretty sure if Carolina pins them deep, New England would have probably just sat on it and played for overtime. He must feel absolutely sick. Aah the life of a kicker.
That going for two down 21-16 seemed curious at the time as well. I guess most coaches have a chart that tells them when the percentages are best to go for two (at least college coaches do), but I don't believe in it with that much time to go, even in the fourth quarter.
It was a great game though, I figured it would be despite the lack of offense or star power. Delhomme bounced back nicely after a slow start, I don't think there can be anymore questions surrounding him.
Dont despair, training camp in a mere 6 months or so away.:)

Thoughts on Halftime show......
First off, the best thing about the show was Kid Rock. I honestly thought Kid Rock.... well, rocked. I thought it was awesome that he did two of his biggest hits, "Bawitaba" and "Cowboy", instead of his other newer and more country-ish songs.
Anyway, as for Janet Jackson exposing her right breast. Does anybody really care? What's the big deal? To be honest with you, I didn't even notice her boob when it happened. But now that I've heard the news from Drudge and seen the pictures, I think CBS is making too much of a damn big deal. Janet's breast was kind of covered anyway..... I said kind of, damn it! :D
Overall, besides Kid Rock, the rest of the Halftime show was not really that exciting. I despised the way the show ended, it was so boring seeing Janet and that moron Justin Timberlake dancing and singing together. The show needed to go out in a bang, and I don't think JT and Janet's breast was much of a "bang"..... ;)

You know, I really think being a kicker is the worst possible position in the NFL. There's just so much damn pressure on the kicker to save their team from a loss or win a game on many occasions, especially when the game is so important and huge like the SuperBowl. And when a kicker screws up, and contributes to the teams loss, that must be an absolutely horrible feeling.
Whether its John Kasay or Adam Vinatieri, I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to be in either of their shoes today. The stress would have killed me...... ;)

Congrats to the New England Patriots on their 15th straight win. I said all along if they could pull that off...they deserve to be World Champion. What an exciting 2nd half that turned out to be.
It has to rank up there with the all time great Super Bowls.
The Carolina Panthers should be proud of what they accomplished this year. Either team deserved to win from their performance (Except Kasey's last kick off).
As for the Janet Jackson "incidient":
I still say Timberlake "plays for the wrong team." This can't sway my judgment. Sissy boy.

Of course to all "Pats fans" or followers, the answer is simply "They are the champions, and the result was a W"... But I can't help but want to tell Bill Simmons to suck my dick.
It was a strong showing from Carolina, and including he and several "experts" of the NFL forgot that one simple formula called "Any given Sunday". Talent will get you everywhere, but on any given sunday you can get shorted.
Congratulations to the Carolina Panthers, the "Rocky" of the NFL.

Well if Carolina can go from 1-15 and 2 years later go to the superbowl then every team has hope next year.
Well except for the Raiders, Lions, Giants, and Cardinals.

I unfortunatley just read this now and I don't know how to explain this.
FROM TSN.ca
BOSTON (AP) - New England Patriots fans turned rowdy after their team's Super Bowl victory, flipping cars and lighting small fires as thousands swarmed the streets.
One person was killed when a driver backed his sport utility vehicle into a group of revellers.
James Grabowski, 21, died when the SUV plowed into fans near Northeastern University, the Suffolk District Attorney's office said. Three others were injured, one critically.
The driver, Stanley Filoma, 24, sped off, but was arrested a short distance away. He was arraigned Monday on charges of vehicular homicide while operating under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident that resulted in personal injury and failing to stop for a police officer, Suffolk DA spokesman David Procopio said. Bail was set at $10,000 cash.
Six cars were also overturned in the area and several others were damaged. Acting Police Commissioner James Hussey said three arrests were made for the ``outrageous behaviour'' and police hoped to make more.
One of those injured was a Boston police officer whose injuries were not life-threatening, police said. The officer was on duty and was trying to stop the car from hitting the crowd.
In Kenmore Square, near Boston University, college-aged fans thronged the streets around garbage fires. A local TV station reported that one of its vans was vandalized, and the crew had be escorted from the area by police.
``Unfortunately, there were those who used this event as an excuse to break laws and destroy property,'' Hussey said.
In the city's Allston neighbourhood, home to many college students and nightclubs, firefighters hosed down revellers in hopes of dispersing the crowd.
At the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, police in riot gear cleared a crowd of hundreds of fans after they set a fire and refused to disperse. There were no reports of trouble at the University of Rhode Island and the University of New Hampshire, where violence broke out after Red Sox playoff games last fall.
The city plans a rally for Tuesday at City Hall Plaza, where two years ago about 1.2 million fans celebrated the Patriots' first Super Bowl win over the St. Louis Rams.
``I'll be there. No doubt,'' said David Harrison, who joined hundreds of other fans who flooded the streets around Boston's historic Faneuil Hall seconds after Adam Vinatieri's 41-yard field goal in the waning seconds capped a 32-29 win over the Carolina Panthers.
It was a remarkably similar ending to the 2002 Super Bowl, when Vinatieri's field goal sealed the victory over St. Louis.
``Could you ask for a better script?'' said Jim Jackson, 44, of Boston, who was partying at The Rack billiards club. ``It's a Hollywood ending - again.''
I know you won and want to celebrate but this is ridiculous.

That's just sad. This is how people celebrate their team's victory? It's not fair to the Patriots. If I was a New England Patriot I'd be ashamed to call these people my fans. That's even if some of them are real fans. Sounds like some of them rioted only because they could.

yeah I read that about the accident. its a shame. somehow people just dont know how to have fun anymore.
as for the game. Pretty damn solid one at that. My hats are off to the Cats for giving the Pats there toughest game of the entire season. Could have gone either way there but Adam found his tough again. Stat of the night was Adam's 4 misses in dome stadiums and all of them being in Houston.
Brady was getting pressure on almost every play and big salute to the O line for letting Tom have just enough time. Zero sacks in the playoffs. Not bad.
The two missed FG's got me a little pissed as did the INT Tom threw that could have iced things. Jake had a hell of a game as well. Seems like both teams did the opposite of what they normaly do almost, least the Cats did by not running the ball. I think they realised that they werent going to be able to run past the Pats so they just aired it out and the Pats didnt have enough experience with there throwing game since they dont throw that much. Jake has a great arm.
The glitz of the day was OK. all the pre-game stuff was again boring, thankfully I had a hockey game to watch that killed 3 hours. The commercials were less than thrilling, and Id say some of the worst Ive seen since commercials became the "in" thing suring a Super Bowl. and the halftime show was pointless as usual. One thing I dont understand is how CBS goes ape shite over a tit, and the thing was practicaly covered up anyways, yet had no problem with the songs being "sung" you have Janet Jackson saying "youve got a tight package alright, guess im gonna have to ride it tonight" and no problem there....morons.
One thing I did want to say is that Simpsons Mastercard commercial was funny as all hell.
Well over all, great game. Two games in one...a great defensive stuggle then an old fasioned texas shoot-out.
Now im thinking about win number 16 in a row :)

yeah, thats the problem...you have all these kids in there dorm rooms getting smashed and the over the top macho BS comes out in spades. I bet there are a lot of "what the hell did I do last night" thoughts floating through the heads of many college students today.
Seems like any team that wins a champioship now a days has fans who go batty and do something stupid. Ill never really understand it.

Incidents like that are going to happen everywhere regardless of the sport or city involved. It's just a sad reality. Like you guys said it was about as likely to have been caused by people who haven't watched a Pats game all year and just wanted an excuse to go crazy. Authorities just have to try to keep it to a minimum, it is a shame someone was killed though, for what?:(

I've come to call these under pressure mistakes the "Hasselbecks". Fortunately Brady's INT didn't cost the Pats the game, but if it had, I would've hung myself. First I saw Hasselbeck's deadly INT, then Favre's, Brady's would've been too much for me. Whew. He lucked out. And so did I. At least one game during the playoffs went my way.

Where exactly were you last night? Just kidding, dude. I know you wouldn't do anything like that. I'm in agreement with pretty much everyone else that I'm sure the Patriots are ashmed of this. I'm positive it doesn't reflect the proud Patriot fans as a whole. I remember reading the same thing happening in Denver when they won their first title. I just don't get it.

Where exactly were you last night?
haha, well....
The day started off just fine...I woke up to the sounds of Hulk Hogan's "I am a real American" in my head, then I realized it was just my cell phone going off. I then smoked half a pack of smokes in anticipation of the lingeria bowl, but forgot that I cant affrord to get it...so I ran off to the packy store and bought a 30 pack of bud. As I got home I ordered 2 peperoni pizzas and forgot that I missed coach God's pre game press conference, so I replayed the 2001 Super Bowl in fast forward while I lit candles and prayed. Soon after I noticed my 30 pack had become a 20 pack and the Bruins game was about to start. So I took off my hat during the National Anthem and watched as the glorious game we call hockey played its way on my screen for 3 hours. A few missing teeth later my buddy called me and asked if I was pumped for the game....I told him that I had all ready written out the contract for my soul and was just waiting for the devil to sign it, when out of nowhere Barry Sanders showed up and tried to get me to bet 300 bucks on the under with Carolina as the winner. Reluctenly I declined and waited for kick off.....As Beyance spat out yet another Anthem (sorry but Rene Rancore is still the best) I decited it was about time I needed a life. So I hoped in my 98 Toyota Corrola and headed on down to the local State College. As the game went on I figured out that Bill Bucker really isnt all that bad and that Boomer Eisiasan can stay over at my place if he was too messed up to drive....Too make a long story short, when I woke up, I had 1 beer left, all the pizza was gone. My face was painted in Pittsburg Steelers couler, and I had a book of matches in my hand. As I stumbled my way to my car, I turned over the engine and said to myself..."damn that Brady is good"

Final Super Bowl Thoughts:
YEEEEEAAAAAHHHH PATRIOTS! I'm not a huge Pats fan, but I'm glad they won their 2nd Super Bowl in 3 years. The game was excellent, well the second half was at least, and the game was very close the whole time. Damn, the Patriots always have to leave their fans hanging till the last possible moment!
Too bad I didn't bet, I would have made a small fortune betting on the Panthers against the spread, but would have lost it all betting the "under." Also, who said Vinatieri was gonna kick the game-winner again?! ;) He did have me worried that first half though.
Once again, I applaud CBS for being a bunch of pussies about the whole halftime show thing. They should have known in advance that a show with Nelly, Kid Rock, Justin Timberlake, and Janet Jackson was gonna be risque, and not "wholesome family entertainment." That's not what the Super Bowl is about. What can we expect next year, Barney and Spongebob Squarepants singing a halftime duet? By the way, I didn't watch the halftime show this year, but I saw the pics later, and thoroughly enjoyed them! I loved the look on Timberlake's face, he's thinking maybe I should point it out to her, but DAMN I'm such a pimp daddy, let me enjoy it while it lasts!
Commericals mostly sucked. There were a few good ones (The dog grabs the crotch, the donkey wants to be a horse, the old people race for the chips, the NFL coaches and players singing "Tomorrow,") but otherwise they were pretty bad. I was ready to throw a rock through the screen every time one of those Levitra and Cialis commericals came on!
Damn, what am I gonna do the next 6 months without football? And the next 6 weeks without March Madness!

I think the whole thing is so blown out of proportion. I have my feminist moments, but I don't believe for a minute that the Jackson/Timberlake stunt encourages men to rip off women's clothes at their leisure.
And why did Shaq's profanity even get mentioned in this article as if cussing was some kind of a sign of the apocalypse? So he cussed about some bad reffing, how many of us don't? I have yet to meet one sports fan who doesn't use profanity when something goes awry during a game.
I think the whole thing is just totally blown out of proportion by the "morally just".

This whole issue about Janet Jackson and her right breast is really getting out of hand. I'm already tired of hearing about it so damn much. Hell, today I heard that CBS is thinking about banning both Janet and Justin Timberlake from the Grammy's this Sunday. I mean, give me a damn break! It's only a breast, and it was shown on national television for only a split-second, for the love of heaven!
Sheesh. You know, it could have been much worse. Justin Timberlake could have taken all his clothes off, and reveal himself to the entire world in the nude. Now, that would've been ugly..... ;)

Fact is, he could have kicked it on the one yard line...Adam was going to nail a 60 yarder if he had to...Just the way it goes. :)

Things I learned by watching Super Bowl XXXVIII....
Janet's tit is overrated.
Tom Brady is a good QB, but he is not Joe Montana.
This was maybe the best Super Bowl ever.
Troy looks good, but Van Helsing looks better.
John Kasay did not lose the game .. The Panthers "D" did.
Jake Delhomme was awesome.
MTV and thier halftime show both suck.
can't wait till next year...

Intresting I knew he couldn't stay out of a job this year although I thought he would be a head coach and not a assistant.
The Redskins announced their head coaching staff today and Gredd Williams is the defensive coach orassistant or something. He did have a good defence in Buffalo so lets see what he can do with Joe Gibbs

Crappy news... screw ESPN for giving into the No Fun League and canceling one of the best new shows on TV!
(AP) ESPN canceled ``Playmakers'' after one season Wednesday, in part because the NFL considered the show offensive and an unfair representation of the league.
The show focused on a fictional team and featured plots that included drug use, marital infidelity, racism and homophobia. NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue had expressed concerns that ``Playmakers'' was one-dimensional and perpetuated racial stereotypes.
ESPN is paying the NFL $4.8 billion over eight seasons for the rights to Sunday night games.
``Many considerations went into this decision, not the least of which was the reaction from a longtime and valued partner,'' said Mark Shapiro, ESPN executive vice president of programming and production.
Still, Shapiro said the NFL did not pressure the network to cancel the show. ``Nobody charts our programming future but us,'' he said.
The network's partnership with the NFL continues Sunday night, when ESPN will televise the Pro Bowl.
``Now we can all move on,'' NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said.
``Playmakers'' drew praise from some critics, and its 11 episodes were watched by an average of 2 million people each Tuesday night, five times the ratings the network drew for that time slot the previous year. ESPN had aired a variety of shows in the time slot, including NFL Films, original programming like ``Sports Reporters II'' and even a college football game between Miami and Marshall.
Along with the praise, ``Playmakers'' drew criticism from players. Tampa Bay defensive tackle Warren Sapp refused to do interviews with ESPN, although he subsequently did several. By the end of the season, however, there were reports that players approached the network to inquire about roles on the show.
NFL Players Association executive director Gene Upshaw said the union didn't like the show in part because of what it felt was the stereotyping of black players. He also disagreed with ESPN's strategy of promoting ``Playmakers'' during broadcasts of NFL games.
The brouhaha over the show was not the only time ESPN stirred up controversy during the season. Radio host Rush Limbaugh resigned as a commentator on ESPN's ``Sunday NFL Countdown,'' after suggesting that Philadelphia quarterback Donovan McNabb was overrated because he is black.
Another TV-NFL conflict came during the halftime show of the Super Bowl, when Justin Timberlake ripped off a piece of Janet Jackson's clothing, revealing her breast to a national audience watching on CBS. Tagliabue called it ``offensive, embarrassing to us and our fans, and inappropriate.''
As for ``Playmakers,'' Shapiro said ESPN proved it could produce a viable fictional sports drama that appealed to critics and viewers. To go ahead with a second season, he said, would be ``rubbing it in the faces of our most important client.''
The network has several shows in development, Shapiro said, and hopes to announce plans for a new series within the next few months. ESPN has also produced several TV movies - including an adaptation of the nonfiction book ``A Season on the Brink'' about Bob Knight. There's no guarantee, however, that ESPN won't run into the same problem again.
``It's a fine line to walk because we're producing dramas on sports in which many of them are partners with us,'' he said. ``It's getting your partner to understand and accept that it's not a reflection'' of their league.
