View Full Version : Most moving death in The Godfather saga
WARNING: SPOILERS FOR ALL 3 GODFATHER FILMS AHEAD!!!
Of those listed, I'd perhaps go with Sonny's death, because that was the reason for Michael's multiple murders of the other dons while his nephew is baptised, which, in turn, foreshadows Michael's subsequent violent acts in Part II, especially Fredo's death-thus, Mary's death at the end of Part III was the end result of Michael's lifetime of immoral acts(Pacino's anguished cry as his holds his daughter's lifeless body is one of his finest acting moments).
After Sonny's death, the next most tragic death of the series is Apollonia's, because she wasn't the intended victim of that car bomb. I've often wondered, though, if she'd have been able to adjust better to life as a Mafia wife than Kay had.
At least Vito had the 'luxury' of dying of natural causes.

I voted for Sonny as well. Incredible character and one of the few characters on screen that I really hated to see die.

Fredo's assassination was pretty moving.

Sonny in The Godfather(10/10)
I really wish they hadnt killed off his character. He was my favourite behind Vito.
For people who have read the novel, does Sonny die in it?

I'd say Apollyona's death in the first. It was one of the few deaths that hadn't been spoiled to me from various AFI specials or internet postings, and really packed a punch

I think Fredo's death in The Godfather Part II was the most powerful death. For one you couldn't help but feel sorry for the poor bastard, he wanted respect but went too far! As the old saying goes "Just Desserts"!

Yes, Sonny dies in the book as well. But, like Jaws, The Godfather was a readable, but not stunning, novel which became a bona fide work of art as a movie.

Fredo in Part II.
I think the most emotional death in the godfather saga is when Al falls of his chair is part 3.
I laughed so hard at that I nearly cried. ;)

Fredo
I felt so sorry for him, he had it coming but that scene was so well played out and powerful....it just kills me.

I have to go with Mary's death in pt. 3. That silent scream has always stuck with me every time I think about the godfathers. A beautiful scene caught in a little above average movie.

Sonny's assassination was very unexpected...as was Fredo's.

Fredo without a shadow of a doubt. The scene is a classic. Sailing off as the dark comes down, subtle just seeing Michael standing looking out the window...the shot goes off and he bows his head.
One of the greatest scenes of all time.

Fredo's death: moved me, haunted me, and made me cry.

Despite the fact that The Godfather Part III is well behind the other two in quality, (though still a good film imo), the first scene I always think of is the tragic scene of Mary's death on the steps of the opera house. Bowieee hit the nail on the head, the silent scream is really heart wrenching and memorable.

Fredo in The Godfather, Pt. II
One of the greatest images on screen of all time. The boat floating, as the camera goes to the left. Cut to Michael...BANG!
Moving, Powerful, Perfect.
Cazale should have been nominated for an Oscar for his role.

I agree. I can also say the same about Quint in Jaws.

Cazale should have been nominated for so many roles, it's depressing.

Everytime I was a movie with him in it, I knew I was going to get a good performance. I wished he hadn't died so early on.
