The book was fairly ridiculous and the movie even more so (wow, so like, vampires in normal times . . . wow . . . like, how original  ), but it has potential. If they concentrated more on the town itself slowly dieing than it might be watchable, and it'll get bonus points if it manages to get some 3 dimensional characters (something both the book and movie were lacking).
I'll be on the look out.
Oh, and I like Rob Lowe; didn't he play Nick in The Stand miniseries? I don't care what anyone says, the guy shouldn't have faded into obscurity.

I agree Rob Lowe should never have faded from our screens like he has done of late. Can't agree with you regarding the original book, if anything the characters were more dimensional than they are in the 79' film adaptation, thats the trouble with screen adaptations they are usualy way off the mark when it comes to creating believable characters from a book. Also it was a modern tale of vampirism infecting a small New England town I don't think you could ever create a totaly 'original' vampire flick, thats not the point here, to a degree King and Hooper have achieved some sort of originality, the way the creatures are presented for instance; nothing scared me more than the sight of Ralphie Glick tapping at the window, equaly so the first reveal of Barlow in the jail scene. I love Tobe Hoopers interpretation, whether he got it spot on is open for debate but all things considered he did a pretty fine job. As for total originality?, thats something virtualy impossible to achieve IMHO.
As for the cast, I will admit David Soul came over as a bit of a wet fart, however James Mason played Straker as he should have been played, very sharp and on the ball. As for Barlow apart from scaring the living crap out of me when I was a kid, I'm not sure whether they got it right with his character, if I remember the book correctly Barlow is written as a very charming lead vampire a total contrast to the rat faced blue headed nightmare that was Reggie Natzler (aka Reggie Nalder).
Roll on Salem's Lot 2004!!.

I loved the book and I also loved the original movie (despite it's flaws) and I'm really looking forward to this adaptation.

Well I've never read the book or seen the original and I like the premise so I'll try and catch this. I hope it will be on a premium channel like HBO or something so that way we can get all the gore and whatnot.
