View Full Version : Sports Predictions.....2004 Edition

The time has come, 2004 is finally here, and its time for everyone to give their own predictions of who they feel will win championships and what might happen in the world of sports.
Mine:
NCAA Football - USC has already won a share of the title and I expect Oklahoma to take down LSU and stake thier claim as well.
NCAA Mens Basketball - Kentucky. They won back in 97, when I was in 8th grade, and I predicted them winning then when pretty much everyone else in my homeroom predicted Duke or North Carolina. I won the tournament and was promised a Kentucky t-shirt by my teacher for winning, and never got anything. Anyways, they have a very good team this year and I look for them to go all the way. Seeing as how no one predicted Syracuse to win it last year, maybe if an unexpected team wins it this year, and one that I predicted, maybe it will bring closure to what happened to me in 1997.
NCAA Womens Basketball - Tennessee. UT has a player by the name of Shanna Zolman, who played ball in my alma matters conference in high school and the girl ruled the state while she played. She set the state record for consecutive free throws (it was over 100) during consecutive games and she also set the new record for all time leading scorer for high school girls basketball here in Indiana. She is hands down (in my opinion) the best player on The Vols and will carry them to a national title.
NBA - Lakers. Last year was a definite off year, and with the addition of Payton and Malone this year, another championship will be added to The Staples Center.
NFL - Colts. I know they are a wild card, but I just have a feeling.
MLB - You all knew it was coming...Cubs. They had an amazing year in 2003, and certainly went a hell of a lot further than anyone, except for Cub fans, expected. 2004 brings new teammates and improvals from last season. They will rebound from what happened during the NLCS and take the rest of MLB by storm.
NHL - I dont follow NHL so I have no idea. Just for the hell of it I'll say Jersey Devils.

NCAA Football - LSU should join USC. I think they'll beat Oklahoma but i'm not certain on that.
NCAA Basketball - They may not have faced a real challenge yet, but Cincinnati has one of their best teams EVER right now. That's a big statement, I know, but let me explain. They have a good offense, unlike last year's team. But this team isn't about the offense, this team has a STIFFLING defense and I think that their defense will lead them to their first championship in over 40 years.
NCAA Women's Basketball - Don't follow it. I think will win again, though.
NBA - It's too easy to say the Lakers. I think that one team(NOT from the West) will shock everyone and finally give the East their first title since the Jordan-era Bulls won it in 1998. This team? The [B]Indiana Pacers. It's time for the East to finally get back in it and no team has a better shot than the Pacers.
NFL - It's either going to be New England or St. Louis. No one is going to win in Foxboro, no one is going to win in the Dome. So who do I think will win? Those darned Pats. They're my favorite team in the playoffs(i'm still pissed the Bengals didn't make it) and they look like the safe bet to win it all. The only team I really worry about is the Colts. They could pull it out with Peyton Manning at the helm..but I just don't see it happening.
MLB - I'd say the Reds..this team should do surprisingly good with new management, but this is truly the year of the Cubs. Or the Red Sox. It has to happen at some point, might as well be a leap year.
NHL - I'm going to go out on a limb: The Calgary Flames. They seemingly have the same feel that the Ducks had last year. If they make the playoffs, watch out.

I would say something about the College games but I know jack shit about it.
NFL: New England - seem to be the best team right now.
NBA: Lakers - and even if they don't have Karl Malone for a little while I can't see a team beating them
MLB: Boston - They finally look like they have the right pitching staff and it's better than the Yankees this year.
NHL: Leafs: This looks like the team they have at least 3 lines of depth a great goalie and a good defense.

NHL - Toronto Maple Leafs
NFL - New England Patriots, (but this is wide open. I can see any team still left taking it, including my beloved Packers.)
NBA - Indiana Pacers
MLB - Boston Red Sox, followed by the Chicago Cubs, but the Toronto Blue Jays are number three, (I know, I know, but the only problem last year was pitching, and they seem to have addressed that fairly well, and the hitters are second to none. Plus, if the Jays sneak into the playoffs, you can shorten the rotation and get Halladay to play in a greater percentage of the team's games.)

NFL- Patriots. Sadly they cannot be beat, even by the mighty Eagles. Next year, watch out for the Falcons. Vick will be back along with a top draft pick.
NBA- Sticking by my Mavericks prediction. THE LAKERS WILL NOT WIN!
MLB- As much as I love the Yankees, right now I think the Red Sox will win it all next year. Let's hope for another SI Cover Jinx!
NHL- I will also go out on a limb and choose the Ottawa Senators. They are the #5 seed in the East right now, and have a very good away record. Unfortunately, the Flyers don't look like they have it in them this year.
NCAA Basketball- Wake Forest. They are ranked #4 right now and have a solid all-around team. Plus they beat UNC already.
NCAA Football- The BCS change produces a better title game, and a rebooted USC team defeats Oklahoma. Miami, Boston College, and Virginia Tech, all new ACC members, all fail to reach New Year's Bowl Games and finish with mediocre records.

USC does have a great chance to repeat. Matt Leinart will only be a junior, and they are only losing 6 seniors, and possibly Kenechi Udeze, who is thinking of going pro.
Could be a dynasty, if Carroll stays that good.

Wow! So much confidence in the BoSox amongst the Schmoes!
MLB - BoSox (if that pitching roster stays healthy)
NBA - Lakers, easily.
NFL - Packers (I'll collect BIG if they do)
NHL - Avs
Dunno diddly about US College sporting teams.

As a whole team, probably. But the Jays have some pretty damn good hitters. These are probably the two best hitting teams in the majors. (Toronto #1, Boston #2);)
Remember, the Jays basically had 'ONE' good pitcher last year, and were still fairly close to the playoffs. (Even though that one pitcher was fantastic.) That tells you that our offence won us a lot of games.

MLB - Anaheim Angels. Though I'd love to say the Red Sox, I think Anaheim is the most complete team.
