I think Penn will finally take home the gold, but Murray and J.D. are long overdue (they've never been nommed).

Penn had a great year (he was much better in 21 Grams, though) and he's deserved to win in the past (see Dead Man Walking).

I haven't seen Lost in Translation yet, but from clips, trailers, etc. that I've seen, Murray looks great as well.

I actually believe it's a race between those two for the Oscar, with Penn most likely winning for Mystic River.

I personally feel that, if Sean Penn doesn't win for his performance in Mystic River, something is wrong with the world.

Sean Penn for 21 Grams, and then Bill Murray, and then Sean Penn for Mystic River. I think both actors are overdue for an Oscar, so either way, I'll be happy. Luckily, they'll both get a Golden Globe, since they're nominated in seperate categories (and I mean, come on, you know they're going to win).

Sean Penn (for Mystic River), though he could be interchangable with Johnny Depp.

Both amazing performances.

This is one of the hardest best actor descions i've ever had to choose I mean Sean Penn neva won an oscar and he was excellent in Mystic River and i've heard even betta in 21 Grams so i think he finally deserves one
same goes with Tom Cruise i know alot of people don't like him but hes one of my favorite and he was great in The Last Samurai and he finally deserves one with all of his great performances wiht this one being the best.

Crispin Glover in WILLARD, the performance of the year and the best in the man's varied resume.

My top 3 from that list:

1) Ben Kingsley in HOUSE OF SAND & FOG
2) Sean Penn in MYSTIC RIVER or 21 GRAMS
3) Bill Murray in LOST IN TRANSLATION

Sean Penn and Johnny Depp are long overdue for an Oscar. I haven't seen 21 Grams yet, hasn't opened here yet, but I don't doubt it's Oscar worthy.

I'm going with Bill Murray, but this is the toughest category for me this yeah. It has been an outstanding year for actors and there are four different actors (and five different performances) that had their movies been in 2001 or 1999 for instance would have won. Although I will call Murray in Lost in Translation the best leading male performance of the year, since this isn't the Oscars, I'd want more than one person to get an award. So I think Bill Murray, Jean Rochefort, Johnny Hallyday, and Sean Penn (times two) are all deserving of mucho kudos, while Philip Seymour Hoffman, Nick Nolte, and Tom Cruise were excellent as well.

I have to go with Jude Law in Cold Mountain.

A great year for actors I must say. I went with Bill Murray, but Sean Penn in Mystic River and Crispin Glover in Willard are not far behind. :)

Johnny Depp in Pirates of the Caribbean was definately my favorite performance of 2003 followed by Crispin Glover in Willard.

That would be either Bill Murray or Sean Penn. For the sake of this poll, I'll go with Sean Penn.

Sean Penn. Although he was the better actor I want to see Paul Giamatii at least get a nod. His work in American Splendor was great and deserves to be acknowldeged.

William H. Macy in The Cooler. He's very talented and underated, and i think it's time he takes the gold home.

I dont see why Penn was so great in Mystic River. Ya he was very good although Tim Robbins easily beat him for his a performance that was completely unlike him. Sean Penn did Sean penn really well.

Bill muarry will probably never get nominated again and is long overdue and he deserves it. Give it Muarry now. penn will get nominated again all he has to do is be in another "serious" film.

Best performance of the year!

Cage's performance definitely had Oscar buzz surrounding it upon MATCHSTICK MEN's premiere, but he sort of got lost in the shuffle since then. Ridley Scott should have pushed the release date back to Christmas, as Cage coulda been a contenda (again).

Paul Giamatti in American Splendor.

Followed closely by Penn, Murray, Depp, and Law. Great year for male acting!

Bill Murray for Lost in Translation. The pure subtlety of the performance alone should land him a deserved Oscar.

Bill Murray-Lost in Translation
Johnny Depp-Pirates of the Caribbean-The Curse of the Black Pearl
Nicolas Cage-Matchstick Men
Tom Cruise-The Last Samurai
Russell Crowe-Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World

As usual a very strong category this year, but these would be my picks...its hard to leave off Jude Law and Sean Penn but I just have to! Bill Murray deserves his due(his Oscars feelings aside). I doubt Depp has a chance but it is still one of the most memorable performances of the year. Cage is pry out of the running because Matchstick Men has no buzz whatsoever which is a shame...Cruise deserves some props because he has been passed over in recent years and Crowe well cause he's the man and is great in M&C.

Sean penn its tough to pick from either MR or 21G...they just cancel each other out to me.

Ben Kingsley seemes very forced and underwhelming to me in HOSAF

Jude Law, Cold Mountain
Paul Rudd, The Shape of Things
Elijah Wood, Return of the King
Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean
Tom Cruise, The Last Samurai

I have yet to see HOSAF, Mystic River, and Lost in Translation.

And Lost in Translation was ThereWolf's favourite film of 2003.

Tom Cruise

Not really a big fan of the guy, but he blew me away in The Last Samurai.

Haven't seen Lost in Translation though, so good luck to Bill Murray.
