I'm planning on watching this movie today and my main concern was that since I have never seen a single episode and I don't know what the series is about I was hoping to get responses from the people here who who are quite familiar with the whole saga would be kind enough tell my what Cowboy Bebop is about so I can understand and enjoy the movie. Could anyone please help me out?

I sure would!
It is important to state that the movie takes place before the end of the series. ( for obvious reasons for those who have seen the series)
Its about a crew of Coyboys(bounty hunters) hunting for money and fortune while each hiding from past sins and mistakes.
The American voice work for this movie(and series) exeeds all expectations.
Ill go throught the series characters-
Spike- former syndycate mafia member Spike was running from his past when he met Jet.
Jet Black- Former cop and owner of the Beebop. Due to the corruption in the police force Jet became a bounty hunter.
Faye- a bounty hunter that has raked in an massive dept due to gambling. She joined the Beebop to escape from that dept and continues to work with the Beebop crew.(despite thier best efforts)
Ed- A wonder kid who can hack into any system. Ed was found early in the series and was the lest member of the Beebop.

I watched the movie without seeing any of the episodes and I understood it. You shouldn't have any problems.

Cowboy Bebop is kind of like a wild west/detective show set in outer space. Sci-fi themes aside, a lot of the events and issues presented could easily take place in a Sergio Leone movie or in 1920s Chicago as easily as on Mars (where much of the action is). This is helped by the wide variety of music present throughout, which at the drop of a hat goes from lonely guitar riff to booming big-band ruckus.
The spaceship Bebop is inhabited by four bounty hunters: All of whom have some a few deep secrets seeded in their past; Spike Spiegel, a former mafia hitman turned slacker bounty hunter; Jet Black, a stoic ex-cop with a cybernetic arm, and owner of the Bebop; Faye Valentine, a sexy wheeler and dealer with seemingly no past at all; and Edward Wong Hau Pepelu Tivrusky IV, an insane genius teenage computer expert who is a walking non-sequitor (if the name is any indication). Oh, and there's Ein, an experimental "data dog" who's likely the smartest member of the crew.
One of the great things about Bebop is that most of the episodes - the movie included - are very self-contained; you could watch any one of them and not really have to have seen one previous (with a few exceptions of course). By the end of the series, all the little bits and pieces of information you pick up along the way add up into the finale, and even the movie provides some insight into why what happened happened at the end.
So once you've seen the movie, I'd recommend picking up volume 1 of the series and starting from the very beginning.

I watched the movie without having seen a single episode of the series and thoroughly enjoyed it. I'd give it about an 8/10. I liked it so much I just bought the entire first series on DVD and plan to watch it over the next week (providing it arrives on Monday).

I've seen the series, but not the movie yet. How does it fit in (and where)?

The movie fits in between 22 and 23 i think, right before the final story arc involving faye.

Ah, thanks. It's basically sort of like an extended episode, then?

I watched the movie today and I felt it was quite good (gave it a 7/10). I managed to understand what was happening at begining pretty easily, but you're replies have been quite helpful. A great big thanks to all the folks who've been nice enought to explain the series to me.

Aye, pretty much. It was a chance for them to go back and put in some of the ideas they had thought up while making the series.

I just watched the first session and absolutely loved it! I went out the next day and bought the 2nd session (but haven't watched it yet). Great stuff. I love the stories, characters and the music/feel.

I saw the best of DVD and I agree and disagree with some of their picks.
To me, the best sessions of Cowboy Bebop are:
Asteroid Blues- This is the first session of Bebop and it's one of the best. This session more than any other perfectly highlights the brotherly relationship between Spike and Jet
Gateway Shuffle- fast paced action and a humerous villain
Waltz for Venus- Great story, fantastic dialouge and a heartbreaking ending makes an unforgettable session
Black Dog Serenade- This is the only session that soley focuses on Jet's past. The session is filled with many interesting turns that leave you shocked, and the ending is something straight out of a romantic gangster movie-- superb.
Mushroom Samba - The more fun session of Cowboy Bebop, Mushroom Samba takes you on a wild comedic ride full of drug hallucinations and punchline after punchline : "I've been carying around this coffin to put you in it the day I meet you"
Speak like a Child - Probably my favorite session of Bebop. This session is really fun: the adventure Spike and Jet go on, the exchanges of tv and tape, and the ending where Faye sees herself as a kid. The ending is very touching.
Brain Scratch Brilliant session, this one's a must see.
Real folks Blues 1
Real Folks Blues 2 - You can't dream up a better ending for this show; Perfect session.
