View Full Version : Oliver Stone vs. George Lucas
The other day, I looked at the latest edition of Roger Ebert's book of film reviews. Towards the end, he wrote about a recent event at our George's Skywalker Ranch in which he lectured to other directors who were there about how making films the old fashioned was dead, digital is the new wave, yada yada yada.
To which Oliver Stone responded with words to the effect of "You'll be the one who killed cinema."
I then went online to find out more about this & came across this article:

Personally, I side with Stone(& according to the article, so do the other directors who were at the Ranch).

I side with Stone too. If you want to shoot in digital, go ahead. But many people think that film gives it more personality, and is preferrable to use. Are we gonna take people like Spielberg out of the business because they prefer to use film?

What I got from the article is that Stone is FOR digital. He disagreed with it at first, but at the end he was calling them up, asking where he could get some high-def cameras. ;) So it seems the article points out that everyone is pro-digital, even though they initially were against the idea.
So saying one agrees with Stone is saying that one supports the idea of shooting in digital rather than film, correct?

Oops, I guess I didn't read the linked article thoroughly enough(sorry), although the excerpt of the incident in Ebert's book, didn't mention Stone's turnaround.

It's a very interesting debate about whether or not digital video will ever replace film. And I hope I'm not the only one who laughed when Stone asked where he could get a good digital camera, after saying "You'll be the one who killed film."

You're not. What I love with Oliver Stone is...he's just so full of shit. :D
As for my personal opinion, I think film rules and still will for a long, long time. As Steven Spielberg said many and many times, it's got a special feel on the screen that feels special. Digital...I dunno. It works for STAR WARS -- but there it's pushed to being too much. I think it'll take over someday, and I think it should, but I also think that for the time being filmmakers have so much great things yet to do with film, we don't need digital takin' over just yet.
