This could be pretty decent. The trailer is fairly mediocre but I love Mandy Moore and believe she is very talented. I will probably see this in theaters, it looks like it could be one of the better movies of January.

I like Mandy Moore and it looks cute so I'll check it, the first official film of 2004 (with the exception of the sneak peek of Win a Date with Ted Hamilton which I missed because I was sick in bed :( ), out.

Not a chance I'll be seeing this in the theatre. Looks like a real borefest. And what's with Mandy Moore getting lead parts these days? GO AWAY MANDY MOORE!

Oh comon, she's doing okay. I can't complain about any of her past roles.

I'm there. It looks like it could have some potential 'chick flick' humor in it. Plus, the guy she hooks up with is cute AND has an accent. Two birds with one stone there. Hehe.

Plus, i'm a rabid Mandy Moore fan :)

I respect you, so i'm not going to get angry here. :(

It is Mandy Moore, but I think she has a good future ahead of her. This COULD be good, i'm not certain but it could be. I'll check it out when it hits DVD, though, not in the theater.

I love Mandy Moore and enjoyed her first two films that she had leading roles in.

A Walk To Remember was a good, schmaltzy film (B) and How To Deal was a surprisingly very good teen drama in which Mandy gave a great performance (B+).

HOWEVER Chasing Liberty looks BLAH.......I'll check it out on video.....

How to Deal was one of those movies where i liked the actors (except for the douche that played macon) but didn't like the movie.

Haha! I wish! If Mandy Moore's character ended up being a lesbian, I just might actually see this in theaters :p.

Anyway, the movie looks alright. Not something I'd see in theaters though. Right now for a Rom Com I'm actually dying to see Win A Date With Tad Hamilton and am pissed at myself for missing the sneak preview last Friday night. I think I'll see Tad in theaters for sure, and I'll chase Liberty on DVD ;). Besides, I'd MUCH rather see the Katie Holmes movie with an identical plot. I'll take Katie over Mandy anyday, and besides, I doubt Holmes would actually do a movie that's really bad. Her "president's daughter" story sounds much more promising, since it has her in it, of course ;). Plus, Mandy fucked me over with last summer's lame ass How To Deal, so I don't know if I can trust her again.

Allow me to rephrase. I was a little hyper the other day, forgive me. I'm just tired of her doing the same movie over and over again. Can't she go against type? If she would, I'd actually take my words back and admit she's a good actress.

Here's my review of the movie, I caught a sneak preview last night and it wasn't good...read below for more.

Starring: Mandy Moore
Seen on: January 6th, 2003 at 7:30 p.m. *
Overall Opinion: A flat and effortless romantic “comedy”…

What a way to start off the year, huh? I mean…last year started off with the fun guilty pleasure “Just Married”- another teeny-bopper comedy. Except that had two funny stars, Ashton Kutcher and Brittany Murphy, stuck in plenty of bad, but hilarious situations. I laughed at that movie, I liked THAT movie. This movie, well…not so much.
Mandy Moore is a true talent…but I seriously can’t wait to see her die in “Cursed”. Seriously, this girl needs a new agent. These teen-love films will only set-up a star-to-be, not solidify one. She is beautiful, has the acting chops to boot, and even is a little funny. But here, she’s stuck in the drones of a terribly unoriginal idea of a rebellious girl falling for a guy. And there was true potential in this movie- the whole idea of the president’s daughter and him being overprotected is something not entirely fresh but would have worked. But when this film turns into a love story between the two unlikely love-birds, it goes to the pits.
Matthew Goode is decent in his premiere performance, but I don’t think we’ll be seeing him in much more after this. Seeing as how this isn’t the best movie to be introduced by. Mark Harmon as the President was believable…until he tried to act like the President, then it just didn’t work. I can’t see the President acting the way he does…
But you know what…I’m obviously not the target audience for this movie. I’ll be the first to admit it, but this review can be for those like me. Those who are sick of the tired romantic “comedy” about the girl falling for the guy, then she finds out his secret and hates him, then they fall back in love because it’s “for real”. Same problem bogged down last year’s “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days”! If they had just NOT broken up for that short 5 minute period just so we could see them unhappy, then that would have been a better movie. If this had focused more on the fact that this girl really has no freedom, it would have been better.
But as it stands, “Chasing Liberty” is a flat and tired romantic “comedy” about taking chances and falling in love, and blah, blah, blah, blah, blah! Two thumbs way down for this effortless film…Mandy Moore deserves better.
4/10

Isn't this the Lizzie McGuire movie all over again??? Or What a Girl Wants?

Got a kick out of Ebert's lengthy aside:

The movie has a view of reality, danger, romance, foreigners, sex and impulsive behavior that would have made ideal honeymoon viewing for Britney and Jason, had their marriage not tragically ended before the movie could open. It reflects precisely the prudence and forethought of two people who could get married at 5:30 a.m. in a Vegas chapel after seeing "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and then file for an annulment after belatedly realizing they hadn't discussed having children, where they want to live, community property, religious affiliation and whether the toilet paper should roll out or in.

You may protest that I'm hauling Britney and Jason into a review of a movie they have nothing to do with, but you would be wrong. There are going to be people who say that no one could possibly be as glamorous and yet as stupid as the characters in this film, and I give you Jason and Britney, case closed.

Wow I cant believe Im saying this but I really enjoyed it. i was ready to hate it as it looked stupid but I couldnt help myself from having fun. Admittedly there is nothing that new or original about the thin plot but I was suprised at how smart the script was. For what was essentially a teen romance drama/comedy it had some pretty sharp lines and I was pleasently surprised. What really helped though was the nice chemistry between the two lead stars. Even though shes not the greatest actress in the world Mandy More is easily the best singer turned actor at there belying a natural grace. Maybe Brittany needs some lessons from her. Also priven provided some nice comedic moments. That sub plot also worked well for me too.

7.5/10

Am I the only one bothered by Ebert review of Chasing Liberty? I don't like how he compared the movie to Britney and Jason's brief wedding. I swear when I read that review my respect for Ebert lowered considerably. He's one of the few critics who hasn't bashed a celebrity (atleast that I've read) before. He has criticised a performance as that is his job to do, but he has never outright bashed someone. That review was uncalled and pretty nasty actually. I thought Ebert was better than those critics who have continually bashed certain people. I was wrong.

I read the review too. From what I remember, he was using an example of Britney and Jason, by saying that their level of stupidity (in marrying while drunk) equals the stupidity of the characters, Mandy Moore,/Matthew Goode/possibly others, in the movie, "Chasing Liberty." I'm not sure how to take this. I've already been hesitant to see "Chasing Liberty," becasue of so-so reviews like Ebert's. But, I am definintely seeing it tomorrow, so I'll be prepared to empty my brain upon entering the theater.

I lost respect for him when he gave Texas Chainsaw massacre ZERO STARS and said it "shouldn't be viewed by anyone"- and then called "Gothika" a great movie of it kind...

Once again I was forced into viewing another Mandy Moore flick simply to maintain marital bliss!

Damn Mandy Moore you will be the death of me or at least the casue of my divorce.

After being dragged to this flick and every other MM flick by my wife here are my two cents.

It was much better than any of her previous flicks, she has finally gained some weight and actually looks like a human, so points there.

The supporting cast in Piven and the subplot with him and his partner was much more interesting than the movie.

We got to see more skin but not enough, and I swear they thru in some cgi shadows during her skinny dipping scene.

But the worst thing about this flick is the fact she is the goddamn presidents daughter and does not even send a basket of flowers to the Boat dude who gave her a free ride and let them sleep at his house!

I was so expecting a small snippet to show a package arriving at his house with the presidential seal on it, or at least a good spot on the canals so he could make money! Damn!

This is your classic formulaic unrealistic never happen in the real or fake world chick flick.

But again it is her best to date.

So if you are into sanitized romance and predictable plots were you always know it will be okay, this is your flick!

Enjoy.
