Gooding Jr: Will Smith Gets All the Roles
Oscar-winner Cuba Gooding Jr. has slammed movie bosses who refuse to give black actors the same opportunities as their white colleagues. The actor also argues that when a good African-American role comes up in Hollywood, it is automatically given to Will Smith. Cuba, 34, says, "I'll never forget when Will Smith came off TV and did his first movie and nobody really paid attention to him. "Then he did Independence Day and it made all this money and boom - he was the go-to guy. And they didn't see it as, 'Let's set a black man up', they saw him as a way to bring the people to the audience. "To this day I speak to my agent about these great roles and he's like, 'They're all going to Will Smith.'" Gooding, after the success of early films like Boyz N The Hood and Jerry Maguire, has recently appeared in critical and commercial flops like 2002's Boat Trip, whilst Smith has starred in the hit Bad Boys and Men In Black franchises, as well as the acclaimed Ali.

Why don't actors learn to engage their brains before they open their mouths and embarass themselves? Cuba just sounds bitter and mean about the trajectory of his career. I'll bet he's passed up on a shitload of scripts that are way better than the nonsense he's been signing up for. Well, if Cuba stray away from Boat Trip ala Chill Factor roles MAYBE studio execs may consider roles for Cuba. And besides what is he complaining about? Even if Will Smith gets all the good roles first, that doesn't make it right for Cuba Gooding Jr., whom I remember to be a terrific actor in the likes of BOYZ N THE HOOD, JERRY MAGUIRE and even AS GOOD AS IT GETS, to accept every starring role-bullshit he gets offered. Don't make it sound like you were forced to those crap movies, Cuba. You were great once. Now everyone laughs about you. Too bad. You should've NEVER won that Oscar and took the easy way out. As for Will, apart from ALI he's been enjoying his popularity as well without offering meaty or original screen work.

Both actors are at the moment not at the height of their art, but let's wait and see for Will's I, ROBOT and Cuba's...ahm..SNOW DOGS 2? :D

Will Smith isn't 1/10 the actor Cuba Gooding Jr. is, their not even in the same league.

The problem is Will Smith is a popcorn actor, and as much as I hate asshats like Bruckheimer and Bay and the schmucks the spew out shit like 2 Fast 2 Furious and Torque I cannot deny that my opinion is in the minorty, the truth is most people enjoy that low brow shit otherwise it wouldn't be in such abundance. I thought Independence Day was one of the cheesiest stupidiest fucking movies of all time, but most people obviously thought differently since it made lots of money.

So Will Smith is always going to get the idiot popcorn roles in movies like Men in Black 2 and Bad Boys II because that's the type of actor he is and it's also the persona that he's encourage throughout the majority of his career. Where as Cuba Gooding Jr. is known for his strong, intense, though provoking work that is when his agent isn't giving him shitty comedy scripts, so he's probably never going to get a popcorn role that pays well.

While I don't think his public comments were a great idea, I can understand his frustration. As shitty as hollywood is, it's doubly so for a minority because the number of roles are much smaller and stereotypes and the majority of white audiences not being able to identify with the actor effectively pigeon holes everyone into place even more so than a regular typecasted actor.

Cuba has been accepting shitty b-movies roles since the dawn of his career. Anyone remember LIGHTNING JACK, the b-grade western he costarred in with Paul Hogan? Hell, BOAT TRIP is status quo for the guy. Don't blame Will Smith for your problems. He chose his parts a lot more wisely than you did. He was great in SIX DEGREES OF SEPARATION, ENEMY OF THE STATE, MEN IN BLACK, and BAD BOYS. This wasn't good luck. This was his selection of jobs. He was in at least one bad movie with ID4, but even that was better than most of Cuba's work.


BTW: JERRY MCGUIRE was a terrible excuse for a sports movie.

There's a little flaw in Cuba's rant from my viewpoint. The good black roles may go to Will Smith, but the only movie I could imagine Cuba would want from Smith's career would be the title role in Ali. But Smith doesn't seem to be taking the roles Cuba's referring to, so he seems to be pissing in the wind
