View Full Version : Spanish Weekly Box Office Report - 2004

Damned Martian
01-08-2004, 03:04 PM
Even with the poor success of my spanish box office thread for 2003, I've decided to make another one for 2004. Here I'll put every week the results of the spanish BO in dollars. And, as I've been doing, and the aussies have copied me ;), I'll make also an estimate of what would have made the movies in the USA with these numbers. I've corrected the ratio I used, since I have new cyphers, and now it's a x12 multiply (it was a x14 last year).

Also, when the numbers are available, I'll give you a look to the top25 of 2003 in Spain's theaters.

Let's start!

ACTUAL numbers for past weekend (January 2-4):

1. THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING - $4,359,388 (-37.6%) // $31,095,588

Is that in Spanish currency, or American currency?

If American currency, yay! Better than the US run.

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

That's the numbers it would have made, have Spain the population and the ticket cost of the US. It's a way to compare the numbers in Spain and USA easierly. So yes, it's doing better (although not great).

Go The Last Samurai!!!

I can't believe you're only getting Imposter now, I assume that's the Gary Sinise/Madeline Stowe sci-fi flick. It doesn't seem to be able to be a hit anywhere.

It wasn't even advertised much. I guess the studio didn't want to spend much money in a film that had no big stars and no international word of mouth. And less with such a big competition still on theaters.

In other news, I'm surprised on how much TLS has made, considering that January is a weak month for films. But I guess it has been benefited by the fact that we had been two weeks without any important release, and the top grosser films that could have been contenders for it were already burnt. I expect it to have a huge drop on second weekend and smaller drops on subsequental. After all, this week is Mona Lisa Smile's release, and Spanish people are as huge fans of Julia as of Cruise.

Same around here. Sometimes I see movies on DVD and then they get a thatrical release. Traffic, Far From Heaven, Spy Game, Two Weeks Notice are recent examples.

More pathetic? :p

I made some changes: since the ticket price isn't the same from US to Spain, I adjusted the per-screen average too (x1.7). Hope this helps to see which films are lower due to their number of screens alone.

BTW, if you're wondering why the hell has Seabiscuit bombed that bad, it's called "lack of advertising". I didn't see one ad for it. Maybe Universal thought it was already well-known thanks to its nominations. Big mistake. It hasn't opened very wide, anyway. What the hell is this strategy?

Franky Banderas

I think CBTD is not going to do very well in Spain. Steve Martin is not very popular or beloved here, and Bringing Down the House opened in the 5th position. There's no reason to think this is going to open higher. In fact, I could say that his films make here the amount they're aimed to do, instead of the vastly overgross that they make in USA. Same happened with Elf.

Cold Mountain will open #1 or #2, that's for sure. GWAPE could break the top10, but in the lower part.

I don't know anything about the other two, so I guess they're not going to appear anywhere next week.

The Spanish box office seems to be behaving extremely similarly to the Finnish one right now. The exception being you guys seem to be getting most films about a month earlier than us.

The thing with Steve Martin films and Elf (and others) doing worse in non-English speaking markets (especially Europe) probably has to do with the fact that Saturday Night Live isn't nearly as popular here as in North America...Although I don't know about Spain, but absolutely no one, aside from film buffs, know who Will Ferrell is around here.

I know. Here most people don't even know there was something called Saturday Night Live :D

Will Ferrell... If you say Old School, I think they know. But he's not a star by any stretch. He's starting to be known.

Steve Martin is very well known. But we don't find him funny, which of course is the right thing to do :D

Yeah, but Christmas movies never do well outside North America. Maybe UK, but I gotta look at stats to find that out.

Did you guys get Brother Bear out there already? It just opened here last week to some ridiculously huge numbers, and it'd be interesting to compare if it did as well in Spain as well.

Seems like Cheaper by the Dozen did decent, if not terribly well...Looks to add a million or two to its way too big total.

Yeah, CBTD did better than I expected, but I guess it'll drop quite quickly, since School of Rock will steal most of its audience. Luckily. Or not, since the dubbing they've made is apparently atrocious: they hired a famous singer/bad actor to dub Jack, trying to attract his groupies, and by the bits in the spot, it's AWFUL. Maybe enough to warrant that it won't open in #1.

I don't really trust the source of these numbers, but it's the only one I've found. They seem to be underestimated from the weekly totals i've been seeing, so I adjusted the index of correction to 13 to try to balance this possible biasment.

*This means that, unlike BOM's list, this list includes the gross made by films released in 2002 during their 2003 run, and doesn't include the run of films released in 2003 during the part of 2004 we've just passed.

Is that the new Almodovar picture? How do you think it'll do, and how they reviewing it out there, if they are yet (and it may be a dumb question regardless, given his track record...)?

The massacre and the demonstrations have affected badly the BO this week:

Yeah, I don't know how the box office was after 9-11 but the last thing I felt like doing for weeks was to see any movie. I was too depressed. The one good thing is that our country united and that was really amazing (especially when you consider that our country is made up of all of the other countries of the world- it's hard to ever be that united on anything.:p

I think it'll open in #3 or #4, since there's actually not a competition in this week's releases (I think the rest are hardly going to open in the top10).

Critically, I've seen good not great reviews so far. But that's something that has happened to Almodovar in Spain for the last 10 years. People here are a bit sick of his tics already. And this is not an exception: travestism again, homosexuality again, explicit sex again, abuses again... Nothing really new under the sun. Of course, outside Spain critics will piss their pants with him. ;)

Brother Bear did really well, just as it did here...I guess the Disney name does still work in selling animations.

Bad Education is doing pretty well, it looks to me, at least. Perhaps not that surprising, though.

Its first weekend's gross has been the biggest ever for an Almodovar film, and considering it has opened in just 160 screens (around... 1400-1500 USA theaters if you make the conversion), it's damn good!

BB has opened so wide, it was inevitable. More than double of Bad Education's theaters.

On a side note, Kill Bill is having the biggest drops I've ever seen since I'm doing this weekly news thread. YAY! :D I predicted it after seeing, hearing and feeling the crowd reaction opening night. It was, indeed, inevitable. In fact, it wouldn't have make so much money first week if it hasn't opened in around 350 screens, far more than what its budget could indicate.

I'm not terribly surprised that Kill Bill dropped so huge. They held it back for so long the hype probably got too big to handle...And most of the people who wanted to see it already saw it upon its opening, I'd assume.

Btw, Club Dread seems to be making more money there than it did in the States ;)

We'll probably get it straight to video by December, if someone bothers to release it.

1) I haven't seen a single advertising for Scooby Doo.

2) Everybody (even friends of mine that haven't gone to the cinema in years) is talking about TPOTC, and want to see it.

3) Cinema freaks seem to like KB, everybody else find it one of the awfulest pieces of shit ever done.

The irony here is that most of the cinema freaks have not seen enough Asian movies to realize how rehashed it is. If anyone were to watch the movie with me, I could point out and name at least half of the references. Is it surprising at all if I told you that Kill Bill pretty much bombed in all Asian cities?

First week (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan/2003/43.htm)

In 6 weeks it had made almost $20 M and was still in the top5 (http://www.boxofficemojo.com/intl/japan/2003/48.htm)

Well, I'm an idiot. A poor choice of words on my part, especially in a box office thread. I meant to imply that it failed to impress anyone like it has in North America. Where there's a lot more ignorance about the genre and all.

I disagree. Most of the people I know who've seen it love it, and they're not cinema freaks.

I actually agree. Although the people I socialize with don't necessarily create a very large demographic. I don't know how older people for instance thought of it.

Geez. How did this become a discussion about Kill Bill? Doesn't it have enough threads already?

Anyway, the right demographic and depending on the person's familiarity with these kinds of movies plays a big part in whether you think it's brilliant or not. But it's not always the case. Sometimes garbage is garbage. I actually went to see Vol. 1 a day after seeing it myself, with a bunch of my friends. All of whom grew up watching all these HK action movies and Japanese samurai flicks, like I did. Let's just say, it didn't impress any of them either. Cinema freaks would be the ones who actually care if it's "The 4th film by Quentin Tarantino" and they tend to shower it with accolades, call it art and all.

:D If it's not, it's damn close :D

Anyway, I know 7 persons who have seen the film. One of them loved it. One liked it. 5 hated it. And I hated it as well. And in the cinema, while I was watching it (opening night), the people around me where complaining all the time about how awful it was. And in the end laughing and saying things like "God, how BAD a movie can be?". And going out of the theater, all the conversations I heard around me where "the worst film I've ever seen", "I'll kill you for bringing me to see this piece of crap" and things like that.

So, the common guy haven't liked it here. Just the geeks (and I know that some geeks have liked it, since the reviews have been very good and in other spanish boards most of the people have liked it).

And, frankly, even in USA it dropped off so hardly it would have been a bomb if it hadn't opened so well. It didn't even reached a 3x multiplier!

Out.

I can't believe that GODSEND made that much and opened at #1. I guess it will eventually be profitable because of international numbers.

Spain is a very strong market for horror movies these days, so I'm not that surprised. I would be surprised if it makes as big of an impact in rest of Europe.

By the way, the release dates there and here seem to match right now pretty well. Out of Time, Prince and Me, 50 First Dates and Secret Window all appeared to have the same dates here and there. An interesting, and completely useless observation for ya there :)

DM I'm curious:

1. How much money did Vanilla Sky make in Spain? I mean, alot more people there have seen it's shot-by-shot American remake that came out only a few years later, yet it had an all star cast (you yourself said Ego-C was popular in Spain). I'm also curious about the reviews it got.

2. How much do you expect Elizabethtown to make?

I hope you understand why I'm asking you these questions.

VAnilla Sky opened to disappointing numbers on #2 spot, earning just $1,121,009 (that'd be a poor $13,452,108 in adjusted numbers), and with a per screen average of $3,775. From then on, it dropped like a 16 ton stone and ended with around double of that quantity (that is, $2.25 M / $27 M).

In other words, it tanked. The worst Ego-C numbers in 10 years at least.

Of course, reviews were on par. There were several disliking voices about Abre los Ojos, but this time all the reviews I saw were 2/5 stars or under. Critics loathed it.

Word of mouth was negative, VERY negative. Nobody was interested in how Hollywood would fuck up a great spanish film, or they simply didn't like it at first and didn't want to see it remade. People laughed at the trailer, and was bitching about the film even before its release. But the release didn't change anything. In fact, things went worst.

About Elizabethtown: taking into account that noone knows who the hell Satan is here in Spain, except the cinema freaks. Considering that none of his films have been particularly popular (Almost Famous is almost unknown, Jerry Maguire is like Vanilla Sky, the prequel, and Singles and Say Anything are completely obscure), and that neither commercially nor critically he's respected. Considering all this, I wouldn't expect much from it. Except if it turns to be a critical darling here, which is unlikely. Or it sweeps the Oscars, which is unwishly. Or it has a lot of star power. Or it opens when there's nothing else to see (like The Last Samurai).

About the reviews, here in Spain we don't have such a great source for them like RottenTomatoes, but from what I've found here and there, reviews go from quite interesting yet flawed to masterpiece.

And what is that FBI movie? And what is it about it that pisses you off? :) Imagine Paris Hilton... Wait, no, imagine Carrot Top... Wait, no... I can't make an approximation of them... Let's say they are 1 billion times more trash than Paris and Carrot together. Well, there are people like this in Spain, that are actually famous. TV programs discover them as media freaks and they start sucking the media's blood by giving exclusives of their private life. But they are not famous for anything they've done, just because of being the stupidest, weirdest, most disgusting, most unbearable people in the world. People like to laugh with them, because they are soooo pathetic. The kind of programs that use these people are called here "telecrap", and slowly have been getting more and more TV time until everywhere you look at, some of them are there. They are the kings of gossip, just that they are not Hollywood stars or have any kind of glamour: they are the garbage that lays underneath any society, the scum of the human race, the most pathetic yet pretentious people ever seen.

This film, like another film released some weeks earlier (Plauto), is made by some of them, starring some of them and directed to all that people who enjoy watching them on TV. The other was kind of a real film, yet completely awful. This one is made by a so-called journalist that gets some of them to make "jokes" to some other (yet they are more like tortures, like tying one of them to a speedboat and drive him thru the water until he almost dies of a choke and has to be hospitalized, or connecting another one of them to an electric source while tied, so you can enjoy his yellings and obvious pain...). So, while obviously I hate this people, I also hate the way they try to hide this sadistic tortures as fun to laugh at. It's wrong in every possible way, from the people involved to the nature of the "film".

Oh, want to see how some of these crappy people look like?

http://www.laverdad.es/panorama/fotos/gente080403.jpg http://pobladores.lycos.es/data/pobladores.com/gu/ar/guarafilin/channels/guarafilin/images/2675491porras.jpg http://hotelglamour.sexo.ph/fotos/tit_tamara.jpg http://estaticos.elmundo.es/elmundo/imagenes/2003/06/13/1055463867_0.jpg

These are the ones that I could find, but images can not describe the awfulness of them. God, I'm sick right now... I don't know if there are people like these out there in Italy (I haven't seen anything similar in USA so far), but maybe from what I've said you can get a picture of the daily nightmare of Spanish Television...

Another good Italian movie... it stars Giovanna Mezzogiorno (you may remember her from my Sex tournament) and Stefano Accorsi (who did that Portuguese film by Maria De Medeiros, April something, as well as many Italian movies you probably won't have heard of)... how are reviews for this? It's kinda like Magnolia so if you liked that one you should try and check this one out (40 screens is better than 3, no?)

REviews have been warm, but not specially good. I'm not much itnerested on it either. And I'll always have the internet to see Giovanna :D

BTW, 40 screens are better than 3 indeed, but still not better enough. Nothing short of 70 screens ever gets to my city, unless it's American (and sometimes not even then, e.g. The Cooler and Thirteen)

BTW, Shrek 2 has had the best opening ever in Spain (or the second best behind ROTK, depending on the source). And without much competition this weekend, and great WOM, it could be one of the top grossers in Spain ever. And another thing: it has already made 90% of the first one's total gross.

As for people, they seem to have more or less the same opinion from what I've heard. There are many people who love it, others don't care much about it, others start calling Moore names... Basically what you can expect from Americans, but to a lesser degree (since we're still not Americans... I guess).

FOOTNOTES:

- Shrek 2 is currently at position #11 in the All-Time charts in Spain, and it's very close to surpass Finding nemo as the highest grosser animated film ever in Spain. More than 5 million people have seen it (though it's still far far away from The Lion King's 6 million people).

- Kill Bill vol.2's gross is around 40% lower than vol.1 in more or less the same theaters.

- Spiderman had made around $15 million in 10 days, while spiderman 2 has only made $12.75 in 12 days.

- Fahrenheit 9/11's weekend is the best opening ever for a documentary in Spain. Former champ was La Pelota Vasca, a documentary about ETA, with around $271,000 in just 32 theaters (141 less than Moore's film).

- The top20 this weekend pulled in $9.36 million, down 13.6% from last weekend but up 36.5% from last year.

FOOTNOTES:

- I, Robot has scored the 7th best opening this year, which could be seen as a weak sign since it's one the biggest openings of the year, but it's not so since this weekend there have been millions of hollyday departures in Spain: many people here usually move to the coasts to spend August or at least the first half of it (though this habit is starting to change, being more spreaded out during the entire Summer).

- Shrek 2 is currently at position #8 in the All-Time charts in Spain, and has surpassed Finding Nemo becoming the highest grosser animated film ever in Spain. 5.29 million people have seen it, though it's unlikely to reach The Lion King's 6 millions.

- Kill Bill vol.2's current total gross is 33% lower than vol.1's in the same time span, and its 2nd weekend is 45% lower than that from vol.1.

- Spiderman 2 is currently #7 in this year's charts.

- The top20 this weekend pulled in $11.05 million, up 18.1% from last weekend and 61.2% from last year.

FOOTNOTES:

- The opening weekend gross of Amenabar's Mar Adentro is the 4th biggest opening ever for a Spanish film, behind Mortadelo y Filemón, The Others and Torrente 2. Reviews have been good to excellent, but word of mouth is even better. I haven't met, either by internet or in person, a single person who doesn't think it's a masterpiece. And apparently, DAvid Poland wasn't very off when he said that Javier Bardem is the one to watch come Oscar night.

- The top20 this weekend pulled in $12.26 million, up 42.6% from last weekend and 3.6% from last year.

What does that Shark Tale translated title translate back to? Seems like it could be another classic or something, but of course, my Spanish is limited to about 11 words.

What's this Hipnos all about? Another (cool) horror flick judging by the poster, but is there any buzz on it over there?

The Sharkfrightener, more or less. It's a lame title, so lame that I think it has been one of the reasons it hasn't done that well in teh BO here.

What's this Hipnos all about? Another (cool) horror flick judging by the poster, but is there any buzz on it over there? There's no buzz about it actually. Some cryptic advertising and that's all. The only thing you could tell from the trailer is that it is a horror film, and that's all. No plot is discernible. Anyway, searching a little, the plot is a mumbo-jumbo of topics of horror films: there's a crime, and the only survivor is a little girl in state of shock. After some years, a new doctor comes to the sanitarium and manages to get some words from teh speechless girl, but the day after the girl appears dead, an apparent suicide. But another patient tells the doctor that it has been a murder, and that she's the next one. And then there's obscure secrets, dark places, evil people and the obvious descent to madness of the doctor.

From what I've read, reviews have been mediocre to bad.

You can get the trailer (in spanish, but anyway they don't talk much in it) here: http://www.portalmix.com/cine/hipnos/trailers/3_hipnos.mov

Great report as usual, always an interesting read :

One question...Do you happen to know why Melinda & Melinda had its world premiere in Spain of all places? Not that it's a bad choice, just seems strange-ish to me.

I think I can answer that: the San Sebastian film festival had a Woody Allen retrospective and to thank them, he held the world premiere there.

Anyway, is the movie any good?

Anyway, is the movie any good? Yes, I think that's the answer. That, and that Woody loves Spain, a country that has always treated him nicely.

According to critics, this is his best since Deconstructing Harry, and a return to his old freshness. Radha Mitchell has got a lot of praise for her two roles too.

Oh, and a side note that has absolutely nothing to do. You know what's the spanish title for The Forgotten? Misterious Obsession. Yep, that is. What the hell was wrong with the original title? Why don't even let it in english before putting it that TV-movie awful name?

Anyway...

I come back from the dead!! :D

OK, I chose this thread to say this:

a) This thread is not going to be updated ever again. The reason is that the web I was getting the info from has turned into a pay-for website, and I'm not going to spend my money in things like that. There are other webs where I can get a bare information of teh BO, but I'm not going to spend my time in that anymore.

b) I haven't been for about a month, and probably won't be around as oftenly as I used to. The reason is triple. One, I've been really busy with essays, exams, burocracy, etc. finishing my career, and that will be like that for the rest of the course. Two, I'm now colaborating with a Spanish website, obviously dedicated to cinema, and I spend there most of my itnernet time (you can check it in my "www" box, though if you're not spanish-speaking you won't understand shit). And three, I spend most of my free time in watching films, tv series, short films, documetnaries, etc. So, it's hard to find time to be around here anymore.

c) MERRY CHRISTMAS TO EVERYBODY
