Everybody's got one...
Which one sports moment can you single out as being a favourite of yours...
I'd probably have to go with Canada defeating the U.S. and winning the GOLD in Men's Hockey at the Salt Lake City Olympic Games in February of 2002.
Trust me, it made a big impact up here.:D

1985- #1 Iowa vs. #2 Michigan in college football at Kinnick Stadium.
Iowa wins on last second field goal by Rob Houghtlin 12-10. My greatest moment ever.
The Avs winning the Cup in 2001.
No, NOT because we won Bourque the cup, but because we deserved it as a team, having been the best team that whole season, and all through the playoffs. It pisses me off that people reduce all of our work to "Oh, thank god Ray Bourque won the Cup".
Archie Gemmill's wonder-goal against Holland in '78 (see Trainspotting) - I wasn't around to see it live, unfortunately.
In my lifetime.... Queen's Park winning the Scottish Third Division in 99/00. Fantastic stuff. We were relegated at the end of the following season, but the year in Division 2, especially our time at the top of the table near the start of the season, was priceless.

Definitely Canada's gold medal win in hockey over the U.S at the 2002 Winter Olympics. We hadn't won the gold in over 50 years, and we finally reclaimed it.

Did anyone shake your hand after the last match?

Ville Peltonen scoring 3 goals in the final match and leading Finland to the first ever Hockey World Championship in 1995.
The best thing in it all? It was in Sweden, in the final game was against Sweden...

Yes, yes they did. Just one of the benefits of not being an old scum supporting chimp.

WHen the U.S.A. hockey team beat the USSR in the Lake Placid Olympic games (it was 1982 I think).

Canada winning gold against the USA, last year. Man, I was so proud, and I will never forget that day. One of the best days in my life, ever.

Two football ones: Keegan buying Alan Shearer for £15 million (well spent ;) ) from Blackburn.
Phillippe Albert's chip over Peter Schmeichel to make it a 5-0 drubbing: Nufc vs Man U 96/97 season. Shame the rest of the season wasn't as fun :D

Three personally for me
1991
Gazza scores a brilliant free-kick against the dirty, dirty gooners.
Des Walker heads into his own net and Spurs win the FA Cup
1999
Pure delirium when Alan Neilsen headed the winner in the 90th minute against Leicester to win the League cup.
Great moments for me.

my favourate was watching paul gasgoine single handedly winning rangers the league in a demolition against aberdeen in the final match of the season,he got the ball in his own half and beat 4 men before belting one past bandy leighton from the edge of the box it is possibly the best goal i have ever seen he got a hatrick that day.
another was watching rangers beat leeds they had banned rangers supporters from elland road but because i live an hour away it was all too tempting so i went down got a ticket and spent the happiest 90 minutes ever without saying a word but i was cheering inside watching my team demolish the english champions in there own backyard.
Mine are all Baseball.
Honorable mentions:
Well, being a Brave fan, seeing Marquis Grissom catch the ball, and seeing Javy Lopez jump into Mark Wohlers's arms, hearing Skip Caray shout "Braves win, Braves win."
Joe Carter hitting a walk off shot off of Mitch Williams to win the '93 series.
David Wells's perfect game against the Twins
All time favorite:
Mark McGwire breaking Roger Maris's homerun record. "Down the left field line...is it enough....GONE."
I have that on tape, and watch it frequently...and get goosebumps everytime. ;)

I agree. One of the greatest moments in sports history. It was the 1980 Olympics.

Aussie Cathy Freeman winning the 400m race in the Sydney Olympics. Having the pressure and eyes of the entire nation on her, she delivered.

The Miracle on Ice is the best ever, personally. More recently, the Patriots winning the Super Bowl and Brandy Chastain taking her shirt off after winning the World Cup.

January 6th 2002: Soldier Field, Chicago
Bears vs Jaguars
The last regular season game to be played at Soldier Field before the remodeling. The Bears need a win to capture the last ever Central Division Championship (reallignment led to the new North Division). Their first Divsion Championship since 1990.
The Bears were up 13-0 in the third quarter but the Jaguars were threatening to get back into the game after Burnell hit Keenan Mcardell for a 16 yard gain to put the ball at the Bear's 20 yard line.
But then, on the next play, the play that best exemplifies the magic that was the Chicago Bear's 2001-2002 season, the Bear's 300+ pound defensive tackle Keith Traylor jumped up to swat down a Mark Burnell pass, and to his surpise it fell right into his arms. Traylor then huffed and puffed and dragged his massive body 67 yards down the field, his eyes wide open desperately trying to make it to the end zone. Unfortunately he ran out of gas and was run down from behind. But this important interception led to a Bear's touchdown which put the game out of reach for the Jaguars. It was the culmination of an entire season of miralcles and crazy plays, and it put the cap on by far the best Chicago Bear's season that I have been old enough to witness.
At that point in time, it was without a doubt the best sports moment of my life.
(unfortunately we got our asses kicked in the playoffs and then followed it up with the embarressing disgrace that was last season)
But as a die-hard Bears's fan, nothing can ever take away the excitement and glory of that day and specifically that play.

Go Bears!

Miracle On Ice was great.
But more recently, I absolutely love watching Robert Horry get the ball that Vlade swatted away, and hit a 25 footer with no time left to beat the Sacramento Kings in Game 4 of the Western Conf. Finals last year. It was an absolute sucker punch.

We all have our own personal fave moments. Mine are mostly Hockey related.
1. Cam Neely's first game back after missing a year and a half with his knee injury. The Garden was M-A-G-I-C-A-L that night. I have never, in any game, seen an ovation like that one. Well maybe Ted Williams at the All-Star game was better :)
2. Ray Bourque winning the Cup was fantastic. He is one of the nicest sincer hard working athlete ever. Its a shame he had to leave town but it was worth it.
3. The day Ray Bourque was traded. in fact that whole few weeks was sick. after a game a few days before, he picked up the puck at the end and skated down the ramp. Who knew that that would be the last time in a B's jersey. (for an NHL game) There next game was insane. Bourque didnt dress, Anderchuck didn t dress, there was to be a press conference after the game. There was tons of speculation. The game was an afterthought. Everyone wanted to watch the press conference. And when they said Colorado, everyone was stunned. All we heard about was Philly or Dallas. Worked out for him tho. Mission 16 wins.
4. The boston Red Sox comming back from the dead vs Cleveland in the 1998 ALDS. The Sox DESTOYED the ball en route to winning three in a row. Of course, like this past season it was DESTOYED by the Yanks.
5. And speaking of those Yanks. Game 4 and 7 of the 2003 ALCS. Who can argue how great these games were? From Pedro to Clemens to Zimmer to Grady.
6. Cam Neely's first game back from the injury vs Pittsburg. Ahh yes, Ulf was there for the taking, and Cam wasted little time trying to crush him. After a whistle Cam skated up to Ulfy and just started thowing haymakers at him. Ulf, big surprise here, was able to pull away from Cam for a split second and FLEW down to the other end of the ice. Needless to say Cam was ejected from the game. But that didnt matter because a week later they played again. and again Cam wasted little time, and again Ulf FLEW down the ice like Forrest Gump...oh yeah, and Cam got tossed out that game too.
7. One more Cam-em-ory, sure that was lame. Claudia Lemieux was another bane in Neely's side. Claudia skated up to him and gave him a two handed spear ring into Cam. So cam started making him his bitch. Claudia got down on all fours and put his head between his arms, like a turtle in his shell. So what does Cam do? The only thing Cam would do. He grabbed him by his back and proceeded to RAM his head into the boards. Lets see someone try that today.
Thats all I can think of for now...Cam is going to the rafters on Monday!

Favourite Sports Moments
1) Joe Carter's HR off of Mitch Williams in game 6 of the 1993 World Series
2) Canada beating the US 5-2 in the Olympic Gold Medal Game - watching the video footage on Yonge Street in Toronto during the game(dead silence) and after the game(everyone going nuts) were priceless.
3) Watching my Redskins destroy the Bills in Superbowl XXVI 37-24 it was also the first NFL game I ever watched.
4) Watching the Leafs sweep the Sens in the 2001 NHL playoffs (which I collected $10 off of an arrogant bastard at my high school that said Ottawa was a scoring machine)
5) Watching Ray Bourque lift the Stanley Cup
That's all I got for now.

The 93/94 League Cup semi-finals, Aston Villa vs Tranmere Rovers. Tranmere beat us 3-1 at their ground, we beat them 3-1 at ours, it went to penalties and Mark Bosnich pulled off a cracking save to see us through, 6-5. One of my greatest memories as a youngster.
Oh, and we went on to lift the cup over some team called Manchester United I think ?? ;)

Silence! They're actually a better team than their record shows. They had injury trouble and coaching trouble, or at least it had *better* have been that or I'm in for another long fall next season.
As for my favorite sports moments, the Hurricanes beating the Cornhuskers for the 2001 National Title in NCAA football was pretty awesome. :)
