WOO HOO! Go Big Fish! Whoever said it would bomb weren't very right. :p

Chasing Liberty's numbers aren't great...I wish they were higher.

Big "yay's" for My Baby's Daddy! I thought it was going to bomb. I didn't really want to see it...but I'm really happy for it.

Wow, MY BABY'S DADDY made more than CHASING LIBERTY ;). I guess Katie Holmes won't have to worry about Chasing Liberty being such a big hit that it will take away from her presidents daughter story, coming out later this year. What's happening with Moore anyway? First How To Deal does poorly, and now Chasing Liberty? I guess she's no longer an "it" girl like she was when A Walk To Remember came out.

Where's Calendar Girls? You'd think it would have been in the top 10.

Overall, this looks to be a pretty small weekend at the Box Office...

Here were my predictions:

CHASING LIBERTY

Friday - 4.1 Million
Saturday - 4.8 Million
Sunday - 2.5 Million

Total - 11.4 Million

MY BABY'S DADDY

Friday - 1.9 Million
Saturday - 2.4 Million
Sunday - 1.2 Million

Total - 5.5 Million

Thank "god" there wasn't a BOFC for this weekend's movies, or I would have done poorly ;). Although I suppose my predictions for My Baby's Daddy weren't THAT horrible.

That's a pretty rude thing to say. The people that said they didn't think it would do very well wide were just expressing their opinion, and I was one of those people. And it really didn't do that great. It looks to make 12-13 Million for the weekend, that's not bad, but certainly nothing great either. My Baby's Daddy has almost the same per-screen average ;).

I know it was...which is why I edited it. God only knows why you put it back in.

I did write "moron," but it was on the spur of the moment, and I didn't realize how cruide and offensive it was still after I posted, or post-post. :) I apologize for those I offended.

Go BIG FISH! I knew that it would do well. I am seeing it Sunday and cannot wait.

Too bad for CHASING LIBERTY. I can't believe that MY BABY'S DADDY, which looks like an unbelievably bad piece of shit, beat it this weekend. Oh well, it will probably have better legs than MY BABY'S DADDY, since movies skewing to that kind of audience never have good multipliers.

This weekend CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN, THE LAST SAMURAI and THE CAT IN THE HAT will cross $100 million, with SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE very close behind. Congrats to all of them.

Big Fish did exactly how I thought it would.

The holdovers will get bumped by Saturday.

Very nice surprise to see Big Fish at number 1. It was one of my favorites of the year and I'm glad it's appealing to wide audiences.

Finally someone knocked the false King off it's perch , and who better than Tim Burton , good job , maybe the bloom is starting to come off the overhyped third installment ( don't worry , it's still one of my favorites ) . It's nice to see another film beat it , if only for one day .

One big problem though . Does anyone see an alarming trend with the top box office films ? Sentimentality is reigning with the mainstream crowd again . It's a cheap , chessy device designed to appeal to the sensitive crowd and it " rings " false everytime .

For a a while , horror had a nice little run , now it's back to sappy , shmaltzy fare again , that's not a good thing .

It's allright , in another couple of months , Dawn should wipe away all the chunks that are forming with all these sentimental , feel good creations .

It's nice ROTK is finally losing it's thunder , and i said it before Cheaper is standing toe to toe with it , great job , but once again , congratulations to Mr Burton , he slayed the dragon .

For someone who "likes" LOTR you seem to bash it a whole lot.

For the Dawn remake: it could be a hit or flop. Depends if it is marketed like TCM and Ring or Willard.

shocking numbers all around. It's a pretty shitty weak, at least there were sum surpises.

Torque, Win A Date With Tad Hamilton, and The Butterfly Effect should help heat things up in the coming weeks.

There are no horror films recently released, how could they be in the highest spot then? People see the best film they think from what is offered, simple as that.

DM , i'm mainly reffering to F vs J , TCM , 28 Days Later , Cabin Fever , and to a lesser extent Underworld . That was a nice little run for horror films , and now it's back to movies with lessons aimed to make everybody feel good about themselves that are dominating at the box office , so that's why i can't wait until Dawn comes out and knocks the feel good films out of the spotlight a bit .

And JL , i do like ROTK , don't get me wrong there , it's just that it's nice that it has finally hit a wall and been overtaken by another film . I mean how many consecutive days has it been the number one film now ( daily grosses ) ? It's enough already , please step aside , i got the hint already . Just hope Big Fish can beat for the entire weekend , but you never know . If it does , then it could be a definite sign that it's losing considerable steam .

There was also Jeepers Creepers 2, which opened at #1 with more than the original made. And Gothika did well too, pretty damn well actually. It held up really decent for the bad reviews it got.

Anyway, as for this weekends numbers, holy shit! Saturday must have had some really impressive increases. Look at MY BABY'S DADDY! Whoa! Almost 8 fucking Million dollars! I guess pretty soon we'll see MY BABY'S MOMMY with Queen Latifah ;).

I feel that ROTK was overestimated so that it wouldn't fall 50%+.

Or was it? I hope it was underestimated.

It has to. Every film, even blockbusteres, has to settle down eventually. It still will pass TTT, and FOTR by about Monday or Tuesday.

Huh, Big Fish at #1. Color me surprised. I thought Along Came Polly would be the film to finally unseat The Return of the King from its throne.

Turns out it will be (well, most likely). The weekend actuals are in and the top two spots look like this...

1) ROTK - $14.2 million
2) Big Fish - $13.8 million

Sony overestimated that one. And sorry, I'm too lazy to post the full, detailed numbers.

miguel_montes
01-12-2004, 06:15 PM
To check the actuals go here: http://www.boxofficemojo.com/weekend/chart/?yr=2004&wknd=02&p=.htm

Yep, ROTK earned more...
Sorry, but: "Big Fish, Not-so-big Balls".

On a side note: I don't understand why people that like ROTK want it to go down the chart... Come on, if it's good and you like it, where should it be if NOT in 1st place...????
It «almost» makes me wanna say: "TAKE THAT!! IN YOUR FACE!!!"

.... But I won't.

Allright let's call it a statistical dead heat ( those differences are negligible ) , since the numbers are so close , maybe Big Fish really did beat it , ultimately , you know how the accounting practices are of some people are .

I'll give it this , it came as close as it could , and i still say it is number one , considering it's lower theater count ( much lower ) , and it's higher per screen average .

Nonetheless , ROTK is finally slowing down , let's see what happens during the week , i hope Big Fish can compete with it further .( for that matter , any other film also ) .

Go T Burton .

I've never understood why some people seem to take offense by a movie's success or failure. Do some of you really derive joy from LotR almost slipping to the 2nd spot? No matter what happens from here on out, LotR ruled the holiday Box Office for the third year in a row, and the day that it drops off the box office charts completely will be a sad one because it will mark the end of the trilogies amazing run. Even if you don't like the movie (which is perfectly fine), to pretend that Big Fish almost beating it at the Box Office some how signified that RotK was overrated is just plain stupid. RotK has been number 1 for 4 weeks...the only reason it has "slowed down" is everyone has already seen it, not because it's becoming a worse movie or something.

I am really happy to see The Last Samurai is hanging in there domestically and internationally. I've seen the movie 3 times in theatres. I fucking love the film.

It's going to drop fairly minimally this weekend consideing it is MLK weekend. Big Fish might beat it for #2.
