NEXT WEEKEND'S NEW RELEASES
Along Came Polly (Ben Stiller, Jennifer Aniston) -
Torque (Martin Henderson, Ice Cube)
Teacher's Pet (Voices of Nathan Lane, Kelsey Grammer)
EXPANDING
Cold Mountain (Jude Law, Nicole Kidman) - 2700+ theaters
Monster (Charlize Theron, Christina Ricci) - 150+ theaters
The Cooler (William H. Macy, Alec Baldwin) - 350+ theaters
---------------------------------
I think ALONG CAME POLLY will be the first real hit of January, and should be able to grab the top spot next weekend and hold it up until WIN A DATE WITH TAD HAMILTON is released. I predict an opening of $28 million with good legs into February.
TORQUE won't do sensational, but it should be a modest hit. It could grab $11 million for its opening weekend, but with bad legs it could reach around $25-30 million, much like BIKER BOYZ, a similar film that opened around the same time last year.
TEACHER'S PET will bomb. Families already have CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and PETER PAN to see among others, and this movie doesn't look appealing in any way. An opening around $6 million seems rather likely.
COLD MOUNTAIN's expansion can only help it at the rate it is going now. I predict a bump up to $10 million next weekend.
THE COOLER could definetely see some business due to the sudden Oscar hype it is getting. It could make out with around $1.5 million in modest release.
MONSTER is getting unanimous critical praise (especially for Charlize Theron's performance), and the Oscar buzz will attract an audience for this otherwise un-mainstream flick. It could make just about $1 million with more to come if it expands.
