Very few film franchises have been such a launching pad for directorial talent.

Alien (9/10) Is my personal favourite, more suspense than action is the best way to sum up the original & the best. It was directed by Ridley Scott after his debut The Duellist which scored him a nomination at Canne. Following Alien with the immortal Blade Runner & future Noir was unveiled.

Aliens (8.5/10) is of course directed by Jim Cameron who before hand had thrown a curve ball with Pirhana 2 went from Terminator to this rollicking space adventure, good mindless Sci Fi entertainment.

Alien 3 (8/10) The most misunderstood of the Legacy, David Finchners big screen debut is a bold film indeed. Much more of a charecter study & moral tale than the others, Alien 3 provides depth to what was going to be just another Sci Fi action Genre film.

Alien Ressurction (8/10) A worthy bookend to the legacy mixing both fast paced action with an intelligent script an inventive cinematic techniques. Directed by Caro & Juennet this was their US debut film, all you have to do is watch City Of Lost Children & Delicattessen to see that there work deserves a second viewing before passing judgment, much like Terry Gilliams films (Fischer King, Twelve Monkeys etc)

Anyway great topic Hypnotic Eye. Thanx

So it seems Alien 3 is noone's favorite. Can't honestly say that surprises me, although I have heard there is a great director's cut circulating out there on bootleg...

I actually enjoyed Resurrection better than the original. It was nice to see someone finally realize that we know what Xenomorphs look like, and bring them into the light. Part 3 had problems before production started. It could've been worse, but it's sooooo listless.

So sue me, I don't Alien 3 was THAT BAD. Granted it had its problems, but I think Resurrection had about a hundred more.

"Alien 3" suffered from a been-there-done-that plot. It is essentially "Alien in Prison." In spite of that, I give it high marks for terrific visuals, great score, Weaver giving her strongest performance as Ellen Ripley (Dillon: "You don't want to know me, lady. I'm a murderer and rapist of women." Ripley: "Really. Well, I guess I must make you nervous."), well-defined and engaging characters (for the most part), swell dialogue (except for Ripley's "They think we're crud" speech), nice development of atmosphere and mood, and the return of the coolest damn species of monster to ever grace the silver screen.

"Alien Resurrection" is nearly the exact opposite. It has an original and fascinating story, but suffers from under-developed characters, so-so visuals, misguided attempts at humor, some really silly dialogue (written by Joss Whedon of all people!), very poor acting by some members of the cast, and insufficient direction. Plus, the alien species is pretty much defanged in this one; the characters are too well-armed for them to be as threatening as they were in "Alien" and "Alien 3," and they lack the shear numbers they had in "Aliens." Still, "Resurrection" has its share of moments and is entertaining if not completely satisfying. And the scene with the swimming aliens is mighty cool.

ALIEN (1979) Directed by Ridley Scott. "Alien" changed the course of sci-fi movie history, as it depicted the story of a merciless, hideous, acid-spewing creature wreaking havoc upon the seven crew members aboard a commercial spacecraft. Sigourney Weaver (in her star-making role) heads the excellent cast, which includes Tom Skerritt, Veronica Cartwright, Ian Holm, John Hurt, Harry Dean Stanton and Yaphet Kotto. There are no flying saucers. No fires in the sky. Just a simple, harrowing tale of a monster from another planet killing off these astronaut miners in the fashion of Agatha Christie's "And Then There Were None". Holm's turn as wicked android Ash will send chills up your spine, Weaver's Ripley is the genre's best heroine, Skerritt's search for the creature through the air ducts provides the film's best jolt, and the awesome visual effects copped an Oscar (Hurt's infamous death scene is riveting). Ridley Scott rules! My grade: A+

ALIENS (1986) Directed by James Cameron. As far as sequels go, this one ranks right up there with the original "Alien", as the sole survivor from that film, Lt. Ellen Ripley (played to perfection by Oscar-nominee Sigourney Weaver) drifts through space in a cryogenic slumber (along with her cute tabby cat Jonesy). After she is rescued, Ripley is awakened by horrifying news: that several Earthlings have traveled to the planet where she and her Nostromo crew first made contact with the hideous, reptilic creature, to set up farming colonies. Ripley and a group of gung-ho Marines set out on a rescue mission after all communication is lost with the colonists. The film also stars Paul Resier as "The Company's" liaison, Michael Biehn and Bill Paxton as two members of the squadron, Lance Henriksen as sympathetic android Bishop, and Carrie Henn as the one surviving colonist. This film boasts some of the best special effects and action sequences ever! The ultimate: Ripley vs. the Alien Queen in the finale..."Get away from her, you BITCH!". An Oscar-winner for visual and sound effects. James Cameron proves with this film that some sequels don't suck. And I can't praise Weaver's performance enough. She is all at once: tough, frightened, sexy, smart and heartbreaking. My grade: A

ALIEN 3 (1992) Directed by David Fincher. This downbeat sequel, the weakest in the "Alien" series, has Ripley crash-landing on a dismal planet which houses a penal colony, and once again battles the title creature (who was a stowaway on her getaway spacecraft in the previous film). Along for the ride are: Charles Dance as the prison's doctor (and Ripley's luckless would-be paramour); Charles S. Dutton and Pete Postlethwaite as two of the inmates; and Lance Henriksen in a dual role cameo as mutilated android Bishop, and a newer, but not improved model in the finale. The film's major flaws are: poor direction from the usually brilliant Fincher (think "Seven") and unsympathetic characters (the prisoners' heads are all shaved, leading to confusion as to their identities in the colony's dark tunnels). The ending, though very dark, is riveting. My grade: B-

ALIEN: RESURRECTION (1997) Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet. This fourth entry in the "Alien" series centers around a cloned version of Lt. Ellen Ripley (Sigourney Weaver, excellent as always), who now has a touch of alien makeup in her DNA. Now a Superwoman, Ripley battles more of the same reptilic creatures she's been fighting for the better part of eternity, with a little help from a group of space cowboys. The decent supporting cast includes: Winona Ryder as an android; Ron Perlman and Michael Wincott as two of the space pirates; Brad Dourif as a scientist; and J.E. Freeman and Dan Hedaya as evil military men. Better than "Alien 3", but still not up to par with the first two "Alien" fright fests. Weaver, always a trooper, once again rises above a mediocre screenplay, which is derivative of everything from its predecessors to "The Poseidon Adventure". Nice try, though. My grade: B
