Dude, great topic:
1. The Bone Collector(Everyone else I talk to love it, but I couldn't stand it)
2. The Waterboy(I'm a huge Sandler fan, but this was terrible. Not one decent laugh throughout the whole movie)
3. THe Scream Series(some of the most overrated crap I've watched in my life)
4. Titanic(enough said)
5. Austin Powers 2(not saying it sucks, but Fat Basterd doesn't make up for all the recycled jokes from the first one which is far superior)
6. Very Bad Things(I love a good black comedy but damn i left that movie a bit sick to my stomach)
7. The Perfect Storm(Great special effects and some bad New England accents)
8. The Cell(visually awesome...everything else sucked bad)
damn it couldn't quite make it to 10....I know I'll think of some more as soon as I log off

Oh and I hate AmericanPhsyco , I know everyone else loved it
Ooops, I forgot to mention "Erin Brockovich",
God I hate it!
And "Blair Witch Project"-there should be a law against that kind of human stupidity!
On the other hand, I love "Parent Trap" and "The barber of Siberia", but I noticed that other people think that those films are borring and stupid...
Geezer
03-21-2001, 07:18 PM
i really enjoyed Tank Girl, where as nearly all my mates cant stand it.
Wow Geezer,
you are the only other person besides me that I've heard of liking TANK GIRL. I loved that movie, it was so fun, but most people don't like it... And boy Morgan, another movie that we both like, wow, as far as movies go we have pretty much the same taste...
Geezer
03-22-2001, 03:55 PM
yeah definatly agree with you Mike, Tank Girl was a brilliant watch.
One film i really didn't enjoy that everyone else seemed to like was Sleepy Hollow, i dunno why but i really found it boring and not very entertaning. I was really dissapointed and even tried kidding my self into thinking it wasn't that bad just because i love all of Burtons other movies.
But sadly i really didn't like it.

I hate:
*Forrest Gump (Run Forrester!!! /ubb/biggrin.gif )
Pulp Fiction (not really hate but I don't think it's a revelation either.
I love:
*Idle Hands (Great dark sense of humour)
*Natural Born Killers (This will be regarded as the most important film of the 90s for future filmscholars, mark my words.)
*Starship Troopers (Nobody gets Verhoven's films. IT'S A COMEDY!!!! Same with Showgirls and Basic Instinct...)
*The Blair Witch Project (It's a great film. Why don't you people understand this...the ending rocks!)

Mike and Geezer...add me to the list of those who loved "Tank Girl".I was so psyched to see that flick, and I caught it on the night it opened.Saw it about 4 times in the theater.Lori Petty was mega-fucking hott,a bleached, buzz cut, punk goddess...in that film, anyway.I thought she was very sexxy in this flick.
A few that I like that many dislike are:
"Sid and Nancy"-most call it "too depressing",but I thought it was a pisser.I am a huge fan of Sid and the Sex Pistols, and although this was not the most accurate portrayal of that monumental band(see "The Filth and The Fury" for the real history),Gary Oldman and Chloe Webb were phenomanal.Their performances alone make this a "must see".
"Repo Man"-another Alex Cox film,a lot of people think it is "too weird".But I saw it as a scathing discourse on L.A.,pop culture, drugs, drinking, the punk scene, the government,UFO's,and religion. An absolute "cult" masterpiece.
"Run,Lola,Run"-Ok,most folks consider it to be no more than a 90 minute music video, but I see it for the incredibly frenetic essay that it is.I liked the fact that we were presented with three different resolutions to the dilema. And Franka Potente was so damn gorgeous...that didn't hurt.
"Blair Witch Project"-You must love this flick for it's unabashed simplicity. We all look for fresh ideas in film making, and this certainly served up a novel approach to cinema. And,echoing White Out's sentiments, the ending was a damn jarring experience.
Movies I hated:
"Happiness"
"Saving Private Ryan"
"Dances with Wolves"
"Forrest Gump"
"Erin Brockovich"
"Almost Famous" ...there are plenty more, but,I digress...
Mostly everything by Spielberg,Rob Reiner,Ron Howard,Penny Marshall, and Spike Lee make me fuckin' wretch.

OH MAN! I hate every piece of overrated crap that gets Tom Hanks another Oscar for dying at the end. Same for Leonardo DiCaprio. Thay should let the public vote for who they want to win, rather than some fixed "Give Titanic 7 of them" jury. That way, Face/Off would have got one.
I also hate BOTH Austin Powers films. He does my head in with his annoying jokes and stupid clothing. Why can't he just roll over and die?
And I liked Timothy Dalton as James Bond. Did anyone else? Oh. Guess I'm on my own then, but you try to get Pierce Brosnsn to say, "Watch the birdie, you bastard!"

VonErie, Sid & Nancy and Repo Man underrated? Sid & Nancy is in my top 25 films of all time, I know the Brockster loves it, and it received almost unanimous critical acclaim, Repo Man was an instant cult classic. I've never encountered anyone who disliked either film, I don't see how they are underrated.
Now, on with movies I dislike most others love:
Dead-Alive (aka Braindead) {worst movie ever}
Gladiator
Highlander (sorry Arrow)
The Cider House Rules
Lucio Fulci films
Go (*cough* Tarantino-rip-off for the Gen-X generation crap *cough*)
The Evil Dead Series
As for films I love that most others despise:
Eyes Wide Shut
Bamboozled
Cutter's Way
New York, New York
Happiness
Last Action Hero
The Blair Witch Project
movieman82
05-07-2001, 04:05 PM
Some movies I love that a lot of people don't: Star Wars: Phantom Menace (the only reason I can figure as to why so many people were disappointed was because of all the hype, but I think it is just as good as the first(technically last) three. Others include Last Action Hero, Eyes Wide Shut, Snake Eyes, Starship Troopers. A lot of critics did not like Basic Instinct and I did. Also a lot of Kevin Costnor's movies like Message in a Bottle, For Love of the Game, Waterworld and even, believe it or not, The Postman. Also The In Crowd is a bit of guilty pleasure that I enjoyed even though I know its a bad movie. The most overrated movie by the public of recent years has got to be Scary Movie. It made a lot money but except for a couple of clever gags, I thought was awful

Some more...
I loved :
Batman and Robin
Batman Forever
The Lost World
Urban Legend (I didn't love it, and it is my no means a good film, but I enjoyed the shite out of it)
I Hated :
Beauty and The Beast

Hey,quentin..
Where in the fuck did I say that those two (Sid and Nancy,Repo Man) movies were underrated? I did not use that word once in my post. And,who the fuck are you to question my point of reference? I base my opinions on the feedback I have encountered from many people who have seen both flicks.Got it?
I could personally give a flying fuck if you or Brock or anyone else on the board loved the flicks. What do you expect? This is a MOVIE lovers forum!! Of course people here will know of and appreciate them! I am talking about the general movie going public...and,believe me,I encounter this demographic a hell of a lot more than you do.Okay? Don't put fucking words in my mouth next time.Think before you post.

Christ Von, chill out. I don't know how on earth you thought my post was hostile or negative or critical of you in any way. You never used the word "underrated", tis true, but you said they were movies you loved that everyone else hated. I simply said I'd never encountered, or even heard of anyone (online or in life) who disliked either film. I didn't say you hadn't, I wasn't "questioning your point of refference" simply citing my own. No reason to curse me out and be so defensive and angry. Think before you post indeed Von, and calm down, no one's attacking you here.

The Ones I hate that most love
Austin Powers series-I can't stand these movies,Mike Myers IMO is one of the most annoying actors that there is.Seth Green is the only good thing this horrable series has.
E.T.-Boaring,I have never made it through this movie without falling asleep due to bordom.
Citizen Kane-Most overrated film evermade IMO,a good flick I just don't think that its the masterpiece most seem to feel it is.
Harry Potter series-Movies suck more than the books do and I didn't think that was possible.
Jurassic Park series-read Harry Potter comment.
Star Trek-The original series is the only tv I liked and except for The Rath of Kahn I just don't care for these films
Comic book movies-Other than The Crow,Ghost World, and the Blade movies I just don't care for comicbook films the latest one the Hulk is IMO the worst film of 2003 so far and thats saying something considering this has been a crappy year in film so far.
The Ones I like but most friends&family don't
Horror films-My favorite genre but other than me,my brother David,my girlfriend Ashly and her brother Luke are the only people I know that like horror.
Black Adder series-I am the only one I know that enjoys British comedy.
Cruel Intentions-Me and my girlfriend are the only ones I know that like this flick, course I can sit through anything with
Sarah Michelle Gellar in it even ScoobyDoo though Freddie Prinze JR gives me nightmares.

ARGHHHH! why does everyone love LOTR(lord of the rings)? its so boring fantasy is balls and needs to be shot! fantsasy always has the same crap, boring rules:
The hero is "accidental"
people die all the time..but this dont make it any more entertaining
theres always a quest where plenty of people go on, not many come back!
theres always that needs to be found or destroyed! WHY! noone cares about the magical crystal of freaky borin' powers!
and finally...all u avid freaks out there who disagree with me...u proabably dont have a socail life..and think you're an elf or summthin sad!

I loved Hannibal, but most of the folk I've talked to about it didn't like it at all.
I didn't like Gangs Of New York that much, but I see a lot of love for it around.

Movies I don't think are as great as most people make them out to be:
LOTR: The Two Towers - I wasn't crazy about the third one either, the first one was awesome, but this one just sticks out. Anti-climactic all the way through, Helm's Deep was a lame battle, Aragorn "dying". In addition, I understand that sequels are usually made out to be darker than the first and that usually comes through heavily in the cinematography and art direction and such. But I thought the whole look of this movie was just sloppy and boring to look at.
Requiem for a Dream - "Drugs are bad" While Arronofsky is busy swinging his camera around and attatching it to everyone in sight, he draws attention away from his crappy story filled with a bunch of characters who deserve what they get. Despite my dislike for this movie, even I will still admit that Ellen Burstyn was awesome.
Donnie Darko - I can't help but feel that the whole movie was written around the fact that Richard Kelly had access to a plane engine. I think a story like this has to work because it's making some kind of observation of society or the world. This was just a heavy-handed EMO teenager movie.
Some others:
The Birds
Big Fish
Boondock Saints
Crash
Fanny and Alexander
The Fountain
A History of Violence
Kingdom of Heaven
Saw
The Usual Suspects
V for Vendetta
Movies I liked or loved but other people don't seem to:
Confessions of a Dangerous Mind - I don't think that people necessarily hate this movie, I just don't hear that much love for it either. Well-paced with a great cast and a totally kickass story, this should have been Sam Rockwell's portal to the big leagues. At least it Clooney some recognition as a director.
Field of Dreams - I'm a sucker for schmaltzy stuff like this but I'll be damned if this movie doesn't make me feel happy. Ray Liotta as Shoeless Joe? James Earl Jones as an ex-hippie author? Rock on And I don't particulary have a problem with Kevin Costner, I know a lot of people do and I can completely understand where they are coming from, but I love most of the stuff he's in.
Panic Room - Some flack is coming my way for this one but I'm not ashamed of what I think; I think this is totally better than Fight Club. For me, Fight Club was something that dwindled in my eyes as I got older. It's not a bad movie, but I do think it is sort of a mish mash of a bunch of ideas. Panic Room, on the other hand, is sleek and actually thrilling. It does what a great thriller movie should do, and place the characters in a simple tricky situation that establishes a strong connection with the audience and then build from there.
Some others:
Death to Smoochy
Ghost
Grindhouse
Signs
Vanilla Sky
X-Men: The Last Stand
Lady Stardust

I hate:
Eyes Wide Shut...big long boring piece of crap.
Meet Joe Black (the remake)...the movie with the most endings (see it, and you'll see what I mean)...horrible, boring, and pure torture.
Hannibal, and Hannibal Rising - 2 movies that should NEVER have been made.
A Brief History of Violence - now I don't hate it completely, but I wasn't blown away by it. Which has caused me many problems with Cronenberg elitists who freak out at the very idea I dare to not like everything he makes. Give me a break people.
Crash - good, but overrated.
Others love, but i dont - Godfather 2, MASH, Vertigo and Raging Bull is in between.

I'm glad to see more disdain toward The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
What's bad, I went to a midnight showing as a nonfan and got the virgin initiation. The gal I was with said the look on my face pretty much seemed to of sucked the fun out of everyone's good times. Total deadpan during the entire rites. She described it as a mortician at a wedding, to which I replied that given a title like Rocky Horror Picture Show, I thought they'd be cool with that sort of thing.
Sid & Nancy is classic, but as other have mentioned I feel it's just more under-seen by the newer generation than underrated or under appreciated. Everyone who sees it seems to think it's great. Oldman is eerily dead-on. I'd like to see it again, since I haven't seen it since finding out who Love is - though I'm pretty sure I remember her character very well, I may just be inserting her antics into my memory of the film.

there are several movies that fit this for me, but that one that by far takes the cake is:
Kids
I'd give it maybe a 2/10
The Postmaster General

I'm not a big fan of Kids either. I wouldn't go that low, but I don't think it's as profound as it's made out to be. However, I think it has a great cast, and a really great soundtrack, so it's not entirely lost on me.

The Goonies. To this day, I don't know why that dorky-ass movie is so revered by people. Every time I admit that I'm not thrilled with it, I get the most strenuous defense of it, and a wheelbarrow-full of scrutiny towards myself.

Movies I hate
Gladiator -I find it boring, I dont like Russel Crowe I dont think hes good at carrying a movie. Phoenix was the only thing halfway watchable. And a plot that was done too many times before.
A Christmas Story- I can not stand this movie, its not that funny and they play it all damn day on Christmas
The Sixth Sense- Unbreakable and Signs were Shymalans only good movies. I didnt like the Sixth Sense at all. As soon as Bruce Willis and the mom were sitting in the room I knew what the ending was cuz she didnt talk to him or introduce the kid to him.
Movies I like
Signs- A lot of my freinds said they didnt like it because it didnt have a surprise ending and that the Aliens were real or cuz u saw an Alien. I really liked it because I thought the scene in the basement was very intense and suspenseful. Really good performances from Gibson and Phoenix
Terminator 3- It had some really good action scenes and I actually liked the ending. It was still the weakest out of the three
Robin Hood Prince of Theives-Not every body hates this but the people who dont like it always bring up the same point. Kevin Costner doesnt have an accent but it doesnt bother me. He knew he couldnt do one so he didnt but I thought he played the role really good with out the accent

Movies I hate that everyone loves
The 6th Sense - Absolutely pointless and boring. The whole film is based on a lie. Its like reading an 8 year olds school home work where they end the story by saying it was all a dream.
Ace Ventura - Find it about as funny as toothache
The Green Mile - Dull, Dull, Dull

Crash: manipulative, insufferable, and about as subtle as a grade-schooler.
2001: Visually it's amazing - no one will argue with that - but it's a poorly-written and pompous Kubrick vanity project. It's especially infuriating because every pseudo-intellectual in the world claims how wondrous it is.
American Psycho: Like 2001, it has one incredible strength, which is Christian Bale's performance, and the rest is pretty crappy. Heavy-handed as all hell.
The Fountain: See 2001. Aronofsky did the human elements better than Kubrick, but layered on the swoony schmaltz about three times as hard.
Sin City: I don't think it's bad, but everyone shits themselves over it, when it ultimately boils down to an average comic book adaptation that got fucking great treatment in post-production.
As for things I like that no one else seems to, I have one massive guilty pleasure: the original Buffy the Vampire Slayer movie. I also really liked Eyes Wide Shut, but reading this topic, people are putting it in both camps, so I can't tell where it belongs.
