Director Larry Cohen's controversial religious thriller doesn't quite live up to expectations, but it's still a decent movie, albeit a little too weird. Seemingly normal people are committing mass murders and when questioned about their motives answer that "God told me to". Detective Peter Nicholas, a religious man himself investigates the crimes which are linked to a mysterious man who may or may not be "God".

Like I said, decent movie. The first half is excellent and provides some very creepy scenes (i.e. the man who just murdered his family), but the plot gets bogged down towards the end. There isn't enough exposition given. Scenes just seem to happen with no explanation as to what is going on and I don't remember being given any clear reason for the mass murders. The acting is good, however, and the story is excellent and very involving. I just wish the execution would have been better.

I'd give it a 6/10...

Any other opinions?

Anytime you have a movie with Andy Kaufman going on a killing spree, you know you have a great film.

I liked it. It got a little slow towards the end, but what a great premise.

Blew me away, the movie is substantially more entertaining than most religiously themed movies and the plot is engrossing enough to solidify a place on my DVD shelf. Admittedly, it is not his best work, if you want to see better Cohen flicks I would suggest the superlative Q, the Winged Serpent. Also, his It's Alive trilogy has garnered signifigant attention.

God Told Me To (1976)- 9/10
Q, the Winged Serpent (1982)- 10/10
