View Full Version : Directing and whatnot

I have this vision disorder (retinitis pigmentosa) that causes my vision to get worse. But I love movies! And I'm an observant person (most likely due to my compensating for shitty vision.) And I want to make movies. It's my main career goal: writing, directing, and acting (possibly.)
So what this all leads up to is:
How much of directing is technical and will demand perfect or near-so vision?

You can't direct if you can't see. Period. It's just not going to happen. You have to see what your actor is doing, what's in the frame, etc. There's no way aronud it.
But it's not like flying fighter jets. If glasses work for you, you're fine.

I work with cameras all day. Still cameras. A few of the people I work with have bad vision, and one of them may go blind, believe it or not. Still media has the luxury of auto focus though. I think that you should give writing a try and try to team up with a buddy that shares your passion. Let him/her do the camera work. We can't really give you a specific answer because we have no idea how severe your condition is. I feel for you though. I get terrible migraines that render me useless, so my hopes of directing are slim. That would be a production nightmare.
