A modern day oddessy

Do you think that it is possible to make a modern day Oddessy without using prisoners, or people being chased by gangsters, or has the technology finally taken over? i.e. Cell Phones, internet. That's what I want to write about, but I am stumped as far as ideas go.

I've thought about this recently while watching a bunch of old classic film. So many times in those stories, getting to a phone or lack of communication is key to the plot.

These days, you can't go anywhere and not be within instant access to almost anyone anywhere. I've thought about how many of those stories couldn't be told today because of new technology.

The key in doing an odyssey story like you're talking about is coming up with some reason why these people don't have phones or communication. It's a challenge but it could be a unique and compelling one.
