After 3 weeks at the top, the first RINGS film to hold on to the top for that long, RETURN OF THE KING settles for second with the arrival of THE LAST SAMURAI. The Tom Cruise pic took in a hefty $3,401,421 (US $38,186,159) over the weekend. Off 36%, Gandalf, Sam, Frodo and the gang occupied the #2 spot with a 4th week intake of $2,439,792, taking the film to an impressive $37,994,080 (US $426,541,726). Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton trailed 16% in their second week with the romantic comedy SOMETHING'S GOTTA GIVE which added a further $2,150,211 to its total, which now sits at $5,940,946 (US $66,696,215) after 2 weeks. Also accumulating rather impressive totals were the other two releases of last week, CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN and HONEY. The Steve Martin/Bonnie Hunt family film only declined 5% and saw $1,540,003 added to its bank, which has accumulated to $4,384,728 (US $49,225,285), whilst the Jessica Alba feature has racked up $3,202,905 (US $35,957,512) after 2 weeks. In between performers SPY KIDS 3D and LOVE ACTUALLY saw their totals rise, respectively to $10,377,767 (US $116,506,324) and $14,772,443 (US $165,843,292). The Rock and Seann William Scott lost 34% of their audience this past week with WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE trailing 34% in its 3rd week. It has however managed a neat sum - $6,010,210 (US $67,473,810). Oscar hopeful Naomi Watts narrowly beat out fellow Aussie Cate Blanchett with her latest outing 21 GRAMS. The heavy handed drama, released onto 39 screens on its Advance Screening run, scored $148,134 (US $1,663,030), whilst VERONICA GUERIN managed $147,994 (US $1,661,459). Also slipping in this week was surfer flick STEP INTO LIQUID, which rounded up all together $123,765 (US $1,389,451).

THIS WEEK (Januray 22nd): Quite a busy week this week with no less than 5 films out in force. Delayed since last October, for unknown reasons, Kate Beckinsale and her black leather clad body finally hit the screens in the horror battle flick UNDERWORLD. Also out is the Fast and Furious-ish TORQUE with Martin Henderson, Jaime Pressley, Monet Mazur and Jay Hernandez in tow. 21GRAMS gets a national release, Award winning drama IN AMERICA is also on the cards, as is current Box Office champ ALONG CAME POLLY with Jennifer Aniston and Ben Stiller. Busy week.

Out Of Time was also intended for this week, but has been pushed till next week. With so much going on this week, it'll be interesting to see who comes out on top. It's safe to say In America and 21 Grams will settle for lower positions, and Torque will most likely fare second best to the likely contenders Underworld and Along Came Polly. We haven't seen a horror flick at the top for a while, and seeing as how Polly is a romantic comedy with Stiller and Aniston, I won't be surprised to see it come out on top, but it would be nice if Beckinsale can pull off some decent humbers.

The Last Samurai opened way better than I'd expected it to do. That's good news. Return of the King has beaten Matrix Reloaded as the biggest movie released in Australia last year, right?

Next week it will be a close call between The Last Samurai and Along Came Polly while Underworld should do well but I don't guess it'll make it to No. 1

I was very happy with Samurai's opening too. Loved the film. ROTK has become the biggest film. Reloaded was overtaken by Finding Nemo, but now ...King has beaten Nemo by over $900,000.

ROTK has to gain about 8 Million more to beat out The Two Towers and about 9 Million to beat Fellowship....

I hope Underworld does well i'm really looking forward to it, but its most likely that Polly will beat it.
