View Full Version : Columbia price drops/ditching the widescreen...
This is from DVD File:
Price Drops - 6:30pm
Rounding out today's news is a giant wave of price reductions of Columbia TriStar Home Entertainment, who on March 23rd will reduce the prices of many of their biggest DVD catalog titles to as low as $9.95. Newly reduced to $14.95: Another You, Best of Ripley's Believe It or Not, Easy Rider, Fly Away Home, Glass House, Greatest 70's Cop Shows, Joe Dirt, Knight's Tale, Master of Disguise, My Girl, Seeing Double, Trapped and Troop Beverly Hills. And listing for only $9.95: Against All Odds, And Justice For All, Apt Pupil, Arlington Road, Baby Geniuses, Bats, Bear, Blind Date, Blue Thunder, Bugsy, Casualties of War, Charlie's Angels: Angels Under Cover, Crazy in Alabama, Drowning Mona, Fan, Glitter, Godzilla, Hanging Up, Hanover Street, Hush, Jawbreaker, Johnny Mnemonic, Kermit's Swamp Years, Last Action Hero, Mary Reilly, Mrs. Winterbourne, Muppets From Space, My Life, No Mercy, Peggy Sue Got Married, Perfect, Thomas and the Magic Railroad, To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, Toy, The, Two Moon Junction and Who's Harry Crumb?. Note, however, that the savings comes at a cost - many of these titles, including Last Action Hero, Mrs. Winterbourne and Peggy Sue Got Married, will be "streamlined" to a full frame-only, single-layer disc, i.e., the widescreen side will be dropped. Columbia has also done this on some of their previous priced-reduced reissues, so pay close attention to the packaging before buying.
Price drops are always cool, but what the fuck is up with ditching the widescreen? If anything, ditch the fucking fullscreen. This blows! What's the matter with them? Stop the madness!!!

This better not become a trend. I don't know if I could get myself to buy FS DVDs.
 :(

Even if FS takes over, there will always be stores like Suncoast that will carry WS, albeit at higher prices, but will still carry them..
If it comes down to it, I will be willing to pay $20 dollars for a copy of a WS movie.. IF I HAVE TO!!!

I noticed at Walmart, a lot of 2-pack DVDs are Full Screen.
Ocean's Eleven, Edward Scissorhands, and a bunch of others are $9.44, but Full Screen only too.
my reaction to this is simple. No OAR = NO SALE. End of story

Well that's fucking STUPID! WHY get rid of widescreen? Why not just have widescreen and get rid of the fullscreen if you must? This is fucking annoying... I don't know what's wrong with them. I hope they realise how dumb this is and stop it immediately.

It won't last. WS outsells FS anyway, plus the way electronics are being made is for WS. In the future FS will die out.

Well I am NOT particular on FS vs. WS.....
I myself lean MORE towards WS because you can see the WHOLE movie. Why can't BOTH formats be on ONE version?!?! Kill the seperate FS & WS versions. TOO CONFUSING :D

BEIII, the thing is that you see less of the movie in FS. On average you're missing between 25%-35% of the film.

I work at a video store and i constantly am on the recieving end of ignorant rants about how widescreen sucks. fullscreen is an attrocity that NEEDS to be stopped. Its terrible and it makes me sick that people still buy it. I don't mind if there seperate versions of each movie, i just know that i'll be getting the one that says widescreen.
Anyways, i'm not too worried about the list above, most of those movie blow anyways, except Joe Dirt, that was pretty funny.

As Moviefan said, WS actually does outsell FS, so it puzzles me why it's SO HARD for my fucking stores to accept that they need to bring in more WS copies! All I see is Full-Screen, Full-Screen, Full-Screen. :(

What a dumb idea. I'd rather pay what they cost now and get them in widescreen. I only have one full screen dvd and that's because my mother bought it for me.

I fuckin' hate Fullscreen a.k.a Pan & Scan versions of DVDs (unless that was the ratio the movie was shot in eg. The Evil Dead). They piss me off to no end. For instance when i went to rent Freaky Friday at Blockbusters i checked all the DVDs and they were all Fullscreen. When i asked the guy at the counter if there were any Widescreen versions of the DVD, he said they didn't get any. ERRR! God that pisses me off.

TV is even excepting the idea of Widescreen a lot of sports are presented in Widescreen. Also Drama's on TV are in Widescreen like The Sopranos and Carnivale, 24. So there is no real reason to stop making WS DVD's.

Exactly, this won't last.

I doubt it will last either.
But while I prefer WS over full, I'm a cheapskate to the supreme, and appreciate any price drops :D

Columbia just fucked themselves up big time. Im not sure about America, but alot of countries will stop selling Fullscreen Tv's and ONLY sell WIDESCREEN sets by 2006, this is fact as its in newspapers all the time and there is an official website for this info too. So obvoiusly people will demand for the ws version anyhow. I see them re-issuing all the fs only titles back to ws in only a couple of years or less.
But if the movie's OAR is Fullscreen, KEEP IT THAT WAY, or if its like t2 and t3, have it as both!
Anyways, havnt people who prefer fs realised there is a zoom button that helps for their liking with ws movies. It mighnt be exact the same if they bought full, but if they say its shit, what the hell do they expect from full on the square anyways?
But wouldnt a widescreen film in ws on a ws tv be in FULL for that tv anyways? :p
