This is a thread to rate the cover art for each movie released on video in 2004, of course, this is only of the ones that were released theatrically and are just now being released for the first time.

We will go week by week, rating the cover art of the movies released that week.

So far we have (Let me know if I'm forgetting any):

AMERICAN WEDDING
UNDERWORLD
OUT OF TIME
UPTOWN GIRLS
THE ANARCHIST COOKBOOK
FREDDY VS. JASON
SWIMMING POOL
BUFFALO SOLDIERS
JOHNNY ENGLISH
LUCIA LUCIA

This week's releases:

Now, remember to be fair ;). If you don't want to see the movie, don't take it out on the cover art. Try and think of if it works well for the movie or not.

*****MY RATINGS*****

American Wedding - B
Underworld - B
Out of Time - D-
Uptown Girls - B
The Anarchist Cookbook - D
Freddy vs. Jason - A-
Swimming Pool - B+
Buffalo Soldiers - C+
Lucia Lucia - D-
Johnny English - D
Cabin Fever - C
Once Upon A Time In Mexico - B-
Marci X - B-
Jet Lag - B-
Spellbound - B-
Pokemon Heroes - C
Intimacy - C
Manic - C-
Open Range - D-

The cover art for MARCI X works really well for it. It might not be original, but it's pretty good and attractive for the kind of movie it is.

The cover art for Cabin Fever is unoriginal and dull. Could have been MUCH better.

The cover art for Once Upon A Time In Mexico is nothing special, but it works well for the movie.

And there's not much to say about the cover art for OUT OF TIME and OPEN RANGE other than they SUCK and the theatrical posters would have been better for the cover art, especially in the case of OPEN RANGE, which had an excellent poster, especially when you put it next to the awful artwork it has now. The poster for OUT OF TIME wasn't anything great, but compared to this, it looks almost like a masterpiece.

Intimacy - B
Manic - D
Open Range - C

My pick for the best cover this week is Cabin Fever. The red tone is quite creepy and the tall trees make the small cabin look so much more enclosed. Also, Mike, i can understand if you don't like it, but calling it "unoriginal" makes me wonder if you've taken a close look at the poster (no offense if you already saw this, but). Look at it from far away (and as a whole) and tell me what you see...it may not suit your tastes, but unoriginal is definitely one thing I'd be surprised to call this poster. Especially when it's the most original of this batch.

Intimacy is an intriguing cover that automatically tells you what the movie's gonna be about. The tone of the cover is nicely done, really dark and mysterious.

The only other cover I would recommend is Once Upon a Time in Mexico. It's a "faces" poster but one that's quite well done.

Yes, I know there's a skull, but really, is that original? I don't think so. I found it to be pretty dull and unimpressive.

k then we can just agree to disagree then :) just wanted to make sure that u'd seen that. and while it's not impressively original, at least in my opinion it's more original than any of the other dvd covers out this week. besides, i've given it B+ which is quite good but not stunning (at least in my ratings) ....there doesn't seem to be much choice this week, i didn't give anything an A. hopefully next week will be better...

oh and btw, awesome thread you've opened here. i'll be back regularly to rate :D

actually the cover art for Cabin Fever is quite impressive, you don't get to see how dynamic it is with jpg. Its got a nice hologram cover and its in a nice slipcase box. It almost makes me want to buy it, even though i didnt like the movie too much.

As amazing and original as that cover is, I'm pretty certain it didn't show in a single theater :D ;).

Yep, we can just agree to disagree. I personally don't find it impressive, but if you do, that's cool.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm glad you like the thread. :)

best cover art so far this year is Cabin Fever's cover case.. w/ the hologram, that is pimp as shit!

Worst is 2 fold: Open Range because of the floating head syndrome and Out Of Time... that could be a poster for any Denzel Movie, since thats all thats on the cover is.. DENZEL!

All of them look pretty good to me, and I agree on Cabin Fever being impressive, although it HAS been done before in different ways

Only one I didn't really care for was Manic, a bit too sloppy of a put together

Open Range is FUCKING GASH (0.5/10).

The UK Spellbound poster was bloody excellent, shame they've churned out a tediously generic DVD.

Pants.

The cover art for LE DIVORCE is unoriginal and generic, yet I still love it. It has two beauties on the cover and a cool and true tag line.

BILLABONG ODYSSEY has a cool cover. I love blue! :D

Considering the movie, the cover art for GRIND is not that bad. It's actually pretty decent. I'm sure it's certainly better than the movie.

The cover art for THIRTEEN is very cool, yet I wish they would have stuck to the blue/black background of the theatrical poster.

The poster for RADIO is awful and generic, which is how the movies looks ;).

The best poster this week: Billabong Odyssey.
Worst: Secret Lives of Dentists, with Radio close behind.

Mike is right though. Le Divorce has a really generic dvd cover but for some reason it actually looks pretty good. Maybe just the two main actresses are enough for any cover to look good ;) but the contrast between the blue and pink make it look really nice...honestly.

The House of the Dead one is also pretty good. Creepy anyway.

The cover art for Under The Tuscan Sun and Secondhand Lions is solid. Neither are brilliant or original, but not much is. Both work well for each movie though.

The cover art for My Boss's Daughter is a major rip-off of the art for A Guy Thing. And I know this has been said on the boards before but I couldn't agree more --- from the facial expressions on the faces of Kutcher and the other guy, it looks like that guy just touched Kutcher's ass.

The art for THE FIGHTING TEMPTATIONS and AMERICAN SPLENDOR is just awful. Cuba had a movie come out last week with awful cover art (Radio), and he has another this week. I guess all of his movies just have awful cover art.

Best cover this week for me: American Splendor. I like it, it's a nice and simple design, and it instantly conveys what the movie is about.

Worst cover: The Fighting Temptations. GODAWFUL dvd cover. it looks like they just pasted a pic of cuba gooding jr (akwardly) on top of beyonce. and there's all that white space, + a ton of clash of color. one of the worst covers yet. My Boss's Daughter is just dull, unoriginal, and the design has been seen on about fifty million other covers.

I like the Lost in Translation cover/poster, but I hate how they have that whole white space at the top now talking about the four star reviews. it looks really bad on top, and they should've used the same font they used for the poster for the title. It was simple and elegant and looked perfect. This new font they used just looks extremely clunky and ruins the original effect the poster had.
