Here are two movies about suburban families who move into their "dream home" only to find out that it's plagued by ghosts and demons.

The Amityville Horror was a box office smash in its day, but when I watched it, I found it dull and slow-moving. I couldn't find one scary thing about, save for the great music score by Lalo Schifrin. I gave it 1/4. The Lutzes were such pathetic people and it was a bore seeing their ordeal.

The Haunted on the other hand actually managed to scare the hell out of me the first time I saw it. The Smurl family's conflict was much more complex and creepy since it involved three troublesome ghosts and a demon that manipulated them. Instead of letting the problem go away on its own, the family does everything they could to get rid of thier unwanted supernatural forces, which caused them even more problems.
This was a much more involving and superior film that deserves a 3.5/4.

Thank you for mentioning The Haunted as I feel it's an underrated modern classic. It has been wwwwwway too long since I have seen Amityville, but I do have to go with The Haunted. I love it's subtlety and simplisticness - it works.
