i bought the alien dvd yesterday and looked at the back and it says that the directors cut is a minute shorter than the other. how is this possible i thought DC were longer than the normal?

You're right, usually the directors cut is longer. In this case however, Ridley Scott wanted to "trim the fat" and actually have his version shorter. Every director is different :)
