What are the Horror Schmoes views of this film (^) by Wes Craven?
Is it creepy, fun, jump-scary? What are your impressions of it?

Not great. Bill Pullman was miscast, he is just not believable in the role. Story is kind of ridiculous. That Tyson chick is pretty easy on the eyes, and it has that creepy looking black dude. A little slow at times, but worth seeing once I guess.

The Serpent And The Rainbow, is based on the book of the same name by Wade Davis. The film and based on a true story about Wade Davis, who in the film is called Dennis Alan, who is an anthropologist and botanical explorer. Dennis, goes to Haiti, to investigate folk ceremonies in the rituals of turning people into zombies using powders and rituals. The whole film is set in Haiti, and the Dominican Republic. along the way several people are after Dennis, to cover up what he has learned and adventure pursues. The film takes awhile to get into but is beautifully filmed in the Dominican Republic, and gets so unique and interesting at the ending that I turned out enjoying it and I'm sure people fascinated with this type of study will enjoy it too.Wes Craven, is good at directing bizarre and unique horror films like this and I look forward to his next film Alice, based on the adult video game where Alice, escapes from a mental clinic and kills her way through Wonderland. I hope that Alice, will be getting an R rating and not a PG-13 rating because when giving the right script and material Wes Craven, can turn it into a well made horror film.

Check out this thread for my thoughts on Serpent and the Rainbow (http://www.joblo.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=4773&highlight=serpent+and+the+rainbow) but I will tell you this, the films got a kick ass realistic feel to it that can be mighty creepy.

First of all let me tell you that this is in no way a "horror" movie. It's more of a drama/thriller type movie with "voodoo" mixed in and directed by Wes Craven so it's considered a "horror" movie. Second of all the first scene with Bill Pullman doesn't really have anything to with the story and dosen't really make sense. Thirdly the movie starts off with narration, which really sucked in my opinion, but then as the movie goes on there's no more narration... What was the point of having the narration at the beggining of the story? Another bad thing about the story is that it claims to be a true story, but probably 90% of is fake. And the ending sucked. Even with these flaws though the movie wasn't horrible. It was kind of slow but it's not like it was boring, it was pretty entertaining. There were some scenes which were highly enjoyable. The adirecting was pretty solid, but the movie is a rental at best.

Final grade: 57

Voodoo, zombies, a "dream stalker" akin to Mr. Krueger...I'd say it's a horror flick.

Was horror to me. Loved the thought of it being real. Since I've seen enough Indian Magic by Medicine Men, I believe a good portion of this movie can/could be very real. The whole nude torture scene would make anyone cringe. Hell, if that scene is true, I feel for the real man. Ouch!

Finally got around to watching it last night. Pretty good movie. Very interesting and creepy in a few places as well as good acting from Bill Pullman. The only downsides were the sortof cheesy finale and the "where the hell did that come from" sex scene.

7/10

There are certain things in life that just creep me out and make me want to run away...then of course trip over nothing...but then get up and keep running. and This movie has a few of those such things.

Overall, its not the greatest but I have not seen this in a while because I think I told myself not to.

So thats a good thing right?

Very good...but definitely a departure from Craven's usual stuff.

This film, up until the end, focuses on the real fear behind the brutal dictatorship of Jean Claude-Duvalier (aka Papa Doc) who used to eat his opponents.

Excellent movie, and gives you a feel for the very RL paranoia in living under a police state.

I remember seeing this in the movies and it scaring the s*** out of me. More recently I still think its a pretty good flick, not as great as I originally thought though. The casket filling up with blood was an awsome scene and I had a couple of nightmares about that.
