Far from being "the worst film of all time," Plan 9 From Outer Space is...well, it's still a piece of shit. 92,375 continuity errors, indisposed special effects, and a daffy storyline (aliens plot to annul the world by resurrecting three dead bodies???). Yet in the face of absolute cretinism, it's not that bad. It's a fun late-night schlock romp that doesn't ask much of the viewer. Ed Wood at least knew how to foment atmosphere. I dug the misty cemetery and the timeless shot of Thor Johnson rising from his grave. The film is dolorous on a technical level, but I can't say that I care. Hollywood needs to lay off Edward D. Wood Jr. They can't do much better with squillions upon squillions of dollars.

I love Plan 9 From Outer Space, how can you not love that movie? Ed Wood was by no means an artist or had even the littlest bit of talent but he certainly was enthusiastic about what he did.

I thought this was pretty funny.

I really liked Plan 9 From Outer Space as well as Ed Wood's Bride Of The Monster and Glen Or Glenda. I also have a book he wrote called Killer In Drag. Everything he has done is interesting and has kept me entertained (whether I'm laughing at it intentionally or not) and I can't say he's one of the worst filmmaker of all time because he did have a lot of inspiration and went out to do what he loved on a small budget.

I love plan 9. I really do. I mean imo you get these stupid boring hollywood shit movies like charlies angels or the tcm remake that didn't entertain me at all and then you have plan 9; a movie I nearly fell off my chair laughing at the first time I saw it- it just entertained me so much- wonderfully stupid and it doesn't give a fuck. 'You see, you're stupid minds...stupid, stupid' is probably one of my favourite scenes from any movie ever.

Plan 9 has indeed been called the worst film of all time. I would tend to agree. If by worst you mean the film most embracing the B Movie genre. The movie that is the best in being the worst, or cheesey, campy, self-deluded, confusing, yet naive.

This film is awful, but awful in a way that is not possible in an age of Direct to Video, inexpensive digital effects, and tounge in cheek postmodern filmmakers. Its awful, in a way that makes me love it.

I recommend this movie to you all and also Ed Wood, a nearly true bio of one of the worst directors of all time. Martin Landau as Bella Legosi was truly amazing. Johnny Depp as Ed was damn good. (But I pretty much like anything he has done).

Yes, the movie Ed Wood, is great and I recommend it to fans of Plan 9 or other Ed Wood movies. I'd also recommend the book Ed Wood wrote called Killer In Drag, which was followed up by Death Of A Transvestite.

I have a soft spot in my heart for Wood and this movie. One of the smartest things I have ever heard someone say about this movie aside from the thousands and thousands of negative catcalls and insults was; it effectively transcends reality and speaks volumes about what is kitchy and what defines the 50's. It is so far removed from reality because of it's over the top, impossibleness, that it literally becomes some form of abstract art. It sums up the unrealisticness of the 50's; it's overly innocent and borderline naive global thought that was the image of the perfect nuclear family. Yea, it's bad. But it's almost like, it's SUPPOSE to be. It's suppose to represent the hokiness of it all.

Oh yeah and the bit where criswell asks 'can you prove it didn't happen?' without so much as a hint of irony is an all time classic moment too.

God I gotta watch this again, now!

This is a bad movie (and quite enjoyable in a bad way) but if you want to see truly bad films go watch Coleman Francis films. Yikes!!!

I haven't seen Wood's other films. I haven't even seen Ed Wood yet, but I'll rectify that soon enough.

The only other Ed Wood films I saw were Glen Or Glenda and Bride Of The Monster. I'll hopefully see more of his films soon. As for Glen Or Glenda and Bride Of The Monster, I'd recommend them to fans of Plan 9.

You guys have to though, get a hold of Mr.Wood's latter monster porn days when he did do those technicolo monster movies with topless women in them. They were soooooo bad they just had to be seen!

Yes, Ed Wood did do some more adult films such as Orgy Of The Dead. I have never seen them though. And Cronos, I think you should see Plan 9 just to see what it is and being able to tell people you saw it. It's really not that bad of a film.

I've almost bought Orgy of the Dead on numerous occasions, but this is back when I didn't fully grasp the concept of "so bad, it's good." I'm glad I didn't purchase it because I would've despised it. I've since built up immunity to z-grade productions.

Think now that you appreciate these type of films you'll give Orgy Of The Dead a try? I haven't seen it myself so I can't personally comment on it.

It's not terribly high on my priority list. I'd rather see Wood's earlier output first (although he only wrote Orgy of the Dead, if I'm not mistaken).

Yeah, I watched 1 Million AC/DC recently, I think Ed Wood wrote it but it was definetely in his league, except in color with nudity and ugly fat men getting laid.

Yes, Ed Wood only wrote Orgy Of The Dead. It's from a novel he wrote. Ed Wood, also wrote One Million AC/DC.

Plan 9 From Outer Space is not the worst film ever made but it is probably the most inept piece of filmmaking next to See No Evil. I enjoy this little shit fest, but the best part of it is watching with more than one person.

I don't think its the actual worst. I think its like the best of the worst. Its like got the honorary title of the worst.

I don't think I could name an actual really worst film ever. There are SO many. One that comes to mind is Witchcraft VI

Thats pretty bad.

There are hundreds of movies worse than Plan 9 From Outer Space. How films has Larry Bucanan done? How many has Albert Pyun done? And trust me, that's not the worst out there either.

Since becoming a cult classic and viewed in a different way critics have been kinder to Plan 9 and it has actually gotten some good reviews.

Yeah I don't think you can call plan 9 one of the worst movies ever anymore. There are movies out there that are much worse than plan 9- Father of the bride 2, Jaws revenge, every movie hulk hogan has ever been in, the rocky sequels....... I could go on with this list for ages. You get the point.

Yes - House of the Dead was equally as bad as this film and they had way too much money!

IN fact, I would argue Plan 9 was a BETTER movie, as it at least had quality method acting...

I've devoted a TON of typing about this movie on joblo.com's forums...

This movie holds a special place in my heart and I truly love this film.

Far far far from the worst movie ever made. It's just so much damn fun and you could tell that Ed deeply thought he was making a classy movie....his passion shows through as his ineptitude surfaces.

I love Plan Nine as well. I don’t think it is the worst movie of all time. It is entertaining which is more then I can say about many other movies. The stock footage of the military is ingenious. I wish more movies would utilize this technique. A little atmosphere shines through as well with the waking dead. It shows that earthlings would shoot first and talk later and probably would attack another race. And maybe I’ve been watching to many bad movies lately but I don’t think the acting is awful. Below average yes, but not awful. You could tell Ed Wood was passionate about the film. I never bash a movie due to funding. Today’s directors could take note and not care what others think.

"Nobody will ever notice that. Filmmaking is not about the tiny details. It's about the big picture." - Ed Wood (Johnny Depp) in Ed Wood

I agree with the general concensus around here that Plan 9 From Outer Space is far from the true worst movie of all time. Sure it is retarded but that isn't exactly a bad thing. Look no further than the scene where the men of earth break into the ufo and meet the alien leader. "Your stupid! Your stupid minds!" The alien leader looks human and speaks English to boot. To make things more ridiculous the earth men don't even question this. They just accept it. Furthermore the alien leader is mad because us humans have made grenades, atom bombs, hydrogen bombs... all weapons that he has admitted the people of his planet have also invented.

Another favorite scene is in the plane when the two pilots first see the ufo outside the window. The one asks "What was that?" to which the other replies "Nothing from THIS planet." Just that casually. He's not even joking. Simply amazing.

So this dialogue is spotty, the props are CHEAP, the aliens try to take over the planet with the aid of three measly corpses, it isn't remotely scary, logic is absent, the effect where the skeleton is first revealed is unintentionally hilarious, the story seems like a ripoff of The Day the Earth Stood Still, the man at the beginning's eyes clearly indicate that he is just reading from a cue card, and Bela Lugosi who died halfway through filming seems to be replaced by a man who doesn't resemble him at all. So?! You know what? IT'S STILL BETTER THAN THE HITCHER REMAKE! To me a movie like that is the TRUE soulless garbage. What's more is that it's more disgusting because for all the money that is put into it what does it have to show for itself? Nothing. Nada. Dick. Plan 9 From Outer Space is horrible but at the end of the day I can laugh at it and I had a good time. The Hithcher '07, The Hills Have Eyes 2, Black X-Mas... these are also horrible but instead just left me feeling angry. Those are the real films I would give the big "fuck you" to. Soooo....

FUCK YOU!!!

Plan 9 From Outer Space - 7.5/10

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

My favorite part is the part with the police guys in the graveyard. The main detective, or whatever he was, points to stuff with his pistol. He just waves his gun around with people standing around him. Doesnt seem like the smartest thing to do. He also tips his hat up with end of the gun.
