I casually group most of those titles in with the horror genre, but if you want to get precise, Parilese pretty much nailed it.

Out of the ones Ive seen, the mothman prophecies is definitely a thriller. Pitch black, to me, is HORROR. Insomnia is drama thriller, not horror at all. Silence of the lambs psych horror. Species and Virus sci fi horror definitely. I consdier sci fi more of a setting and not a "breed" sometimes.

I'd class DONNIE DARKO as a HORROR. It was HORRIFYING how wank it was.

I would class both of these as horror. If they had of made Pitch Black somehow set on planet earth, you would have the classic monster movie. Just because a movie takes in Sci Fi or what ever else does not preclude it from the horror genre.

Horror encompasses

Hard Core

Splatter Punk

Quiet

etc etc etc....... you do not need some knife weilding maniac at the center of a movie to class it as a horror movie.....
