The voodoo things always scare me and this film was quite impressive and atmospheric.
I don't remember a lot of it to be honest but I know it was really creepy and somber, there was a gloomy atmosphere and I like that.
The ending was not pleasant if I remember well.
It stars Martin Sheen.
8/10

THE BELIEVERS (1987) Directed by John Schlesinger. Conspiracy-themed horror film centering around a widowed police psychologist (Martin Sheen) whose young son (Harley Cross) is targeted as a sacrificial lamb by a devilish voodoo cult. This film has it all: gory murders and horrific imagery; tons of suspense, twists and turns; an intelligent script by Mark Frost (co-creator of TWIN PEAKS); and a knockout supporting cast that includes: Helen Shaver as Sheen’s landlady girlfriend; Robert Loggia as the detective on the case; Jimmy Smits as a terrified cop-turned suspect; Lee Richardson and Elizabeth Wilson as Sheen’s surrogate parents; Harris Yulin as the cult’s powerful leader; Malick Bowens as a mega-creepy voodoo priest; Carla Pinza as Sheen’s superstitious maid; Raul Davila as a voodoo shop owner; and Richard Masur as Sheen’s magician lawyer. This underrated gem ranks up there with ROSEMARY'S BABY, THE OMEN and ANGEL HEART as one of the best supernatural themed conspiracy horror films. Sheen is in top form, as always, Cross is believable and natural as his son, and Loggia stands out as the foul-mouthed cop. Definitely worth the price of a video rental. My grade: A

Antonio, thanx for that cool review, it reminded me how much I need to check this one out! Somehow It managed to evade my movie hunting radar...but not anymore.

This also sounds a bit like Serpent and the Rainbow but without the visual fx.

I never did see this movie but still plan on it. I remember back in college it was pulled off the shelves when some college kids vacationing in Mexico were killed as part of some satanic rituals. I forget exactly the circumstances and the year, probably around 1989.
