And once again, my precious LOVE DON'T COST A THING is left out in the cold.
;)
Cool nominations, all in all. I'm sad to see us WILLARD fans be left without some nominations, but 'tis groovy that Angela Bettis was honored for MAY and that THE LAST SAMURAI got a shiteload of honors. Overall, not a bad list.

Pretty good nominees I suppose......except one......and believe me this one has me shaking my head.....lol
"Talk To The Hand" from T3 is the LAMEST line of the year by far...I cant believe so many people voted it as the best..
Im glad to see Keisha Castle-Hughes, Charlize Theron, Benicio del Toro, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johannsson, Freaky Friday, Love Actually, 28 Days Later, Lost In Translation, and of course LOTR:ROTK scoring nods.

Excellent nominees.
Unfortunately I still haven't seen some of the films. Last Samurai just came to Finland, so I will check that one. I have no idea when Lost In Translation will come here.
It's very nice to see Angela Bettis get nominated for Best Actress.
It is disappointing though to see the awesome highway pileup from Final Destination 2 not make Best Action Sequence. It was tons better than the crane scene in T3, and tons better than all of the other noms. Easily the best action sequence of the year. Very sad to see it not nominated.
It's also disappointing to not see May make it for Best Horror Movie. It was the best horror movie of the year, in my opinion. It should have at least made the top 5.
It's kind of surprising to not see Willard get ANYTHING, since it has a ton of fans here.

how can Hulk be in the worst movie of the year but also in underrated movie of the year? Well i thought Hulk was kickass. one of my fav movies of 2003.

How does Gigli and From Justin To Kelly not get nominated for Worst Movie of The year.
Actually I wondering who actually went and watched it.

That's what I was thinking; JUSTIN/KELLY and GIGLI probably didn't get nominations because quite a few schmoes decided to stay away from them after hearing how awful they were.

RE:
The problem with these is that not enough people have seen them. I've heard that May just came straight to video here in Finland and I don't think Final Destination or Willard have arrived in any form. Definitely not at the cinema, but I haven't been in a rental place during the last month or so. So maybe they are out on video.

Good nominations. They would be better without so much The Last Samurai and Return of the King. Hopefully Kill Bill will kick Peter Jackson's ass for best movie.

I'm very glad that Kill Bill Vol. 1 is the leader this year and i hope it gets most of the awards.
I'm sad that Ben Kingsley didnt make it for Best Actor for his amazing potrayal in House of Sand and Fog whereas Nicholas Cage was good but not that good.
I'm sad not to see neither Irreversible or City of God anywhere, two movies that amazed me this year.
The line "Talk to the hand" was pretty lame, I'm surprised to see it compete.
Well that's about it, I know exactly who/what to vote for in each category so bring on Feb. 5!

Tons better than all of the other noms? When did you see Kill Bill and RotK?!
I did like the FD2 pileup..... but it doesn't hold a fucking match to the battle of Pelennor fields.

The nominations are good, but...
For example, Matrix Revolutions in MOST OVERRATED and MOST UNDERRATED movie of the year...
Well, ROTK (biggest sweep), Kill Bill and LIT will be the winners this year.

LOL!
That's what happens when a movie divides the audience like that. Obviously some people loved it and others were highly disappointed. Count me in the group who love it.
I don't see Phone Booth is underrated because most people liked it alot. Including critics. Ditto for Identity.

Hulk was a real love-it-or-hate-it film. I was the only person on Earth with no strong feelings for it. I thought it was pretty good, and I didn't understand the major backlash (same as Reloaded), but I didn't find much to be spectacular about it.

Go MAY for Trippiest and Best Actress nods!
I agree with it kickin ass if Kill Bill knocked LOTR on its ass, that would be the day, at least I can get satisfaction now from it being on the most Overrated movie of the year list.
These are some pretty solid nods, but wheres Anna Faris?:(
cant win em all.....

I hope for the opposite.
I loved KILL BILL and thought it was insanely entertaining, but I'll second Scarface in saying: what the HELL is it doing up for Best Screenplay? This is the first QT movie where the script takes a back seat. It's a skeleton plot.
It looks like the battle of the fanboys: QT vs PJ.

Well my votes are in and i can tell you that Kill Bill got 7 and LOTR got 2 from me even though I think LOTR was the superior movie for me. WEe'll see what happens.
Im just happy that QT beat PJ in the Empire Awards!!!!

It's pretty sad when the Oscars are more indie-oriented than the Golden Schmoes, IMO. The only glimpse of independent films I see here is Lost in Translation. No In America, American Splendor, Station Agent, etc, etc... Pretty sad. All mainstream. Everything fan-oriented. No risk or surprising choices. Oh, well, it's up to you people.
And then people go dissing the oscars because they don't nominate one of their favorites. Well, here's the proof of what happens when you have a lot of people voting many popular films because hardly anyone has seen films like The Singing Detective or The Good Thief. Just think twice the next time you're going to say something against any award list. Please. Thanks.

Nice Nominations but very hard to choose. I think you should be able to vote for your runner up. Because a couple are a very close 2nd or tied. My biggest dissicion is Favorite Movie between ROTK and The Last Samurai.

I'm angry that sometimes Reloaded and Revolutions are called "The Matrix Sequels" and in others their split into two different films. That's really inconsistent.
Also, where the fuck is fucking Keisha Castle-Hughes from Whale Rider for Best Actress? She was the superior performer of the year, no doubt about it! If the Oscars can give her a nod, we can too!
I haven't seen Kill Bill, but there is no way its better than ROTK. ROTK TO WIN!

Yeah, that's cool. In fact, now that the voting has begun, you can feel free to post your votes here as well. As long as no one is seeing the OVERALL TOTALS, it won't really affect much.
PS: I've said before, but I'll say it again: DON'T BLINDLY PICK A MOVIE in every category only because you LOVE the movie. If you love the movie, that's for BEST PICTURE.
BEST TRAILER, BEST SCREENPLAY, BEST MUSIC, BEST POSTER, ETC... should also be judged on their own. Alas...I speak only to myself, it seems..... :) (this is not in reference to you, UrbanLegend...but in general)

LOL "Talk to the hand" got nominated? What is this, 1996?
Overall, the nominees are pretty good. Nice to see Kill Bill and Lost in Translation get so much recognition.

No In America, American Splendor, Station Agent, etc, etc... Pretty sad. All mainstream. Everything fan-oriented. No risk or surprising choices. Oh, well, it's up to you people.
You do realize that a lot of people don't choose to stay away from those films, right? I'd kill to see more small movies...I can't because of where I live, and it's the same with a lot of Schmoes. I end up waiting for video but unfortunately, these movies come out on DVD after the Golden Schmoes are held. Thus, I end up nominating big movies, and that's the reality of it.

LOL...
Not a surprise though. There's one thing I can say about the LOTR consortium, they're dedicated. I'm already preparing for its sweep (including a victory for the overrated Sean Astin). I consider Kill Bill getting the most nominations a victory in itself, and we may have to leave it there.
Still, GO KILL BILL!

No problem with Return of the King sweep. It deserves it. I still need to see Kill Bill though. Even if it looks like Quentin's homage to himself it still looks like fun.

I'll be hella pissed if they come crashing our party! If you're serious, they probably got everyone to come vote, and now it's not a fair awards show anymore. You all might say they have their right to choose, but it's so one sided now. UGH

My picks (please keep in mind I haven't seen LiT or ROTK):
Best Movie: The Last Samurai
Worst Movie: Dumb & Dumberer
Best Actor: Tom Cruise (The Last Samurai) (haven't seen most of the other choices, except POTC)
Best Actress: Angela Bettis (May)
Best Supporting Actor: Ken Watanabe (The Last Samurai)
Best Supporting Actress: Lucy Liu (Kill bill Vol. 1) (that was the only one of the choices from a movie I've seen this year)
Best Director: Quentin Tarantino (Kill Bill Vol. 1) (only because the only other movie I've seen out of the choices was TLS)
Breakthrough Performance: Cillian Murphy (28 Days Later)
Best Screenplay: Identity
Most Overrated: I liked most of the choices, but the one that got the lowest score out of them from me (7/10) was Bruce Almighty, so I picked that
Most Underrated: The Matrix Revolutions
Trippiest Movie: May
Best Comedy: Finding Nemo
Best Horror Movie: 28 Days Later
Best Animated Movie: Cowboy Bebop: The Movie
Best Sci-Fi Movie: Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines
Best Special Effects: X2: X-Men United (haven't seen ROTK)
Biggest Disappointment: Dreamcatcher
Biggest Surprise: Identity (I seriously thought I would hate that movie, but wound up loving it)
Coolest Character: The Bride (Kill Bill Vol. 1)
Best Music: Kill Bill Vol. 1
Best Movie Poster: Big Fish
Best Trailer: The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
Best Action Sequence: House of Blue Leaves (Kill Bill Vol. 1)
Most Memorable Scene: (see above)
Best T&A: Kate Beckinsale
Best Line: "Back to you, fuckers!" (Bruce Almighty)
It couldn't be more obvious that Uma will win Best Actress for Kill Bill because of all the QT/Kill Bill nuts. She seems to be the most popular choice with the schmoes. And Kill Bill will win Trippiest for sure. Nemo will win animated for sure. Coolest character will be "The Bride." In a lot of cases, it will be more interesting seeing the runner-up choice, even if those will probably be pretty predictable too.

Damn fanboys.
ThereWolf still stands his my statement that The Matrix sequels sucked!!!
And there's no way that anyone could convince me otherwise, unless Monica Belucci were going down on me the whole time I was watching them... and even then...
Anyways, ROTK will more than likely sweep this year, but next year's Golden Schmoes should be pretty interesting, seeing as there will be no LOTR movie this Christmas.

Those kinds of fanboys piss me off.
I'm probably what you'd call a Matrix fanboy (not to a ridiculous extent, but I did like both Matrix sequels), but I don't go into some rage whenever someone says a movie I liked sucked - so they don't have the same tastes as me, big fucking deal. Those kinds of narrow-minded "there-can-be-no-opinions-except-mine" fanboys give the rest of us a bad name.
Whatever, I'm starting to rant here, so I'll get back on topic.
As for the awards, LOTR is gonna sweep. Finding Nemo is definitely gonna win Best Animated Movie (The Triplets of Belleville is probably gonna be runner-up).
In all honesty, it's kind of sad when the Golden Schmoes are more predictable then the Oscars. Next year's are definitely gonna be more interesting, since there's no LOTR movies released next year.

FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION:
KILL BILL VOL. 2
IN ALL CATEGORIES - GOLDEN SCHMOES 2005
:D
Damn it, that's right, we won't have LOTR next year, but we'll have Kill Bill: V2. So that will take its place and sweep everything. Won't we ever have it where there's not one movie that's going to get nominated for everything and win everything? We'll also have Harry Potter 3 for 2004, but that's not quite as big of a deal as LOTR and Kill Bill, it's easier to defeat ;). I wish people would decide to vote for more smaller films, but it won't happen.

As it was said before in this topic, not everyone can see the smaller movies, due to the location, so it's something that's hard to blame us for. That's why there was a big lack of indie movies in this year's nominations

I think its very hard to say that Kill Bill vol. 2 will sweap next year at everything theres no LOTR yea but theres Troy, Alexander, The Aviator, Oceans 11, and alot more but I think that Troy and Alexander will be tough to beat but will have to wait untill all the 2004 movies are released to decide even wait for Kill Bill vol 2.

But still, a lot of them are on video by this time, and a good number of the schmoes can see them.

Is there any way we don't have to vote in every category? Because there's a few categories that have only one or two movies that I've seen, and I feel guilty just voting for what I've seen, and being ignorant of the other films that could possibly be better. Is there any way that I can just vote in selected categories?

Yeah for The Lord Of The Rings: The Return Of The King! I'm so glad the people voted for it. It deserves every single award it won. And I'm just as happy for Mr. Depp. I see I'm not alone in the opinion that his performance was more impressive than Bill Murray's, though I think Sean Penn was just as good as Depp. Another fantastic year for the Golden Schmoes!

Wow, POTC didn't deserve half those awards. Thank god there's no LOTR movie this year, it will actually be fun to see who wins. Oh, we should restrict the voting to schmoes only next year.

I had actually hoped that ROTK would have gotten less awards, there were a few categories in which other films were better (trailer, score, poster).
KILL BILL should have also received a few more...but overall I guess the results could have been worse.

NO WAY! The Freddy/Jason Final Battle should've won best action sequence! As for best horror, 28 Days Later was good, but I wouldn't consider it the best horror film of the year. Freddy Vs. Jason or Cabin Fever anyone?
I'll have to agree, Return of the King did get a couple of undeserved awards (poster, trailer, etc.)
But what the hell is this? How did Keira Knightley manage to take both Breakthrough Performance (for acting apparently...) and Best T&A. Artificially enhanced cleavage and all. She beat Monica Bellucci... ?!
And I'm completely surprised that Charlize Theron won Best Actress. I thought it was pretty much in the bag for Uma Thurman.
So you see, sometimes good things do happen and people get what they deserve. The lack of awards for Kill Bill is proof of this.

Seriously, ROTK for best screenplay? Apparently those of you who voted that one are unappreciative of Tolkien's work. Granted, I am a huge fan of the trilogy and all things Middle-earth, but that screenplay was a fair adaption, at best, of Tolkien's masterpiece, though a solid movie with that not in mind. And f'in Rudy for best supporting actor, come on, you little wagon riding fanboys need to get off ROTK's proverbial d*ck and grow a valid opinion of your own. And best comedy...Finding the stupid orange guppy? An amazing animated piece that was cute and entertaining, but a comedy, have those of you that voted for Nemo as a comedy ever actually seen one. Do your parents allow you to watch R rated movies? Go home watch some movies, then watch some more, eat your vitamins and come back next year with some real votes. Old School was by far the funniest movie of the year. Enought bitching, nice to see Depp get the credit he deserves, and Peter Jackson for directing.

Thank the heaven's that there will not be another lord of the rings movie this year. This is seriously getting ridiculous. These uber-ring fan's don't even hesitate for another performance or movie. They just see return of the king and the click. Screenplay, supporting actor, come on, you have to be kidding me. And even the fact that Miranda Otto, got runner-up is disgusting. I'm just thankful that this year there will be some variety to the selection, because there won't be any fat hobbits on the big screen.

I'll just say that I liked the winners, and am thankful Kill Bill didn't even get a runner up spot for Best Screenplay

Yes, none of us have valid opinions because they differ from yours. Mmmmhmmmm. Sean Astin got my vote because I thought it was a brilliant performance that he poured everything into.
Great for ROTK.

I knew it'd be a battle of the movie geek treasures, and as expected, LOTR pulled out with the victory. A decent list of winners, though. I wouldn't pick Johnny Depp for Best Actor (terrific performance, but considering he was in the same category as Penn and Murray...), but okay picks all in all.

I just take heart there will be no LotR flood voting next year.
About just letting the schmoes vote? Then why not just stop at the nomination process and you'd have your results. I'm still uber pissed though that the fantastically put together Alien Quadrilogy did not get DVD set of the year.
I think Miranda Otto Supporting Actress was probably only of the 2 categories I voted Rings for. I thought she was great in that role, but Sean Astin was just hammy. Real hammy.

Some of RoTK's wins are questionable but all in all I'm happy.
I did find it odd that matrix sequels won most overrated....doesn't something have to get good ratings to be overrated? Last time I checked they got mediocre reviews, were widely dissed on the internet, and didn't perform as well as expected at the B.O. Biggest disappointment maybe, but not most overrated.
For the record, I liked them though.

I already nominate 'Eurotrip' to this category. ;)

jesus christ the results are bloody terrible!
fuck lotr, i cant stand the fact that it won basically everything, even undeservingly. Ok well maybe not undeserving but still, BEST TRAILER and BEST SCREENPLAY???? Are you fuckign kidding me??? I think it's safe to say that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre had the best trailer of the year, I find it mind-boggling more people didnt acknowledge this. As for best screenplay... at least LIT got runner up.
The one category that I figured would surely satisfy was horror, being as it was a great year for teh genre. Alas i was wrong again. I hate 28 Days Later, and i dont mean offense to people who vted for it, but IMHO that was not even close to teh best horror movie of last yr. It was barely even horror.
Finally, to end my asshole rant, The Matrix Sequels overrated?!?!?! Most people hated them!! How is that overrated?
-disclaimer - EDsoulsurvive's above post was just a rant, he mean's no offense to anyone and is just voicing his opinion; he know's "to each his/her own."
I'm sorry, but the winners are PATHETIC

LOL!
The winners aren't that great, but since Charlize rightfully won BEST ACTRESS and not Uma, it's all good.
Although I think Jessica Biel deserved BEST T&A, and THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE so fucking should have had BEST TRAILER! COME ON! IT'S ONE OF THE BEST TRAILERS I'VE SEEN IN A LONG TIME, AND THE BEST OF 2003! EVEN IF YOU DIDN'T LIKE THE MOVIE YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT! IT DIDN'T EVEN GET THE RUNNER-UP POSITION. WHAT A SHAM!
And LXG deserved WORST movie. What was up with Charlie's Angels 2 getting the runner-up spot? It wasn't nearly that bad. LXG was a TRILLION times worse. Charlie's Angels 2 was better than the first, that's for sure.
It's kind of funny how the two movies that were picked for MOST UNDERRATED aren't even underrated ;). I voted for IDENTITY though, since it's easily the best of the noms.

I didn't expect it to win Best Screenplay though...

No, but I figured she would win Best Actress and nobody else had a chance, but thankfully, she didn't. I don't care, I don't have to see it to know that her performance has nothing on Charlize. Frown upon it if you want, but I know I'm right.

I'm not going to frown upon it; even if I wanted to, I can't, since I haven't seen Monster yet. But I think you commented at one point about Final Destination 2 having a better action sequence than the nominees this year, but if you haven't seen all the others (especially KB), then it doesn't seem to be balanced. There was a lot of good action this year, though none were the "Monster" of action, so they're all about equal (the nominees I mean)
I see no end to people's redundant moanings about an online vote.
Honestly, the whole point of it is to have people vote for their favourite films and that's exactly what they have done. Whether some have blindingly voted for a certain film is completely up to them and is a part of such a vote whether you like it or not.
People hate the Oscars, people hate online popularity voting, where does it end.
I agree to some extent though, it will be nice to see what comes through next year because LOTR is completed. But for now, thank fuck ROTK won the most!

Out of what I've seen, I feel it's the best. There's no way to see all of the movies released in the year. If you think something looks awful, why bother? Not everyone will see all of the movies released during the year, so then if people go by that, I guess nobody can vote or say something was the best of the year, because they haven't seen everything. That's stupid though, and I think people can call something the best of the year. There's nothing wrong with it. Obviously, it's just out of what they've seen so far.

I am disappointed, though not very surprised that Johnny Depp won best actor. I think it might be one of the most overrated performances of all time. Bill Murray or Sean Penn or Tom Cruise should have won. They were excellent. Depp was also the runner-up in the supporting actor category? What for? His performance in that movie is even less special than his work in POTC. Don't get me wrong. I like and admire Johnny Depp. He's an ultra cool actor. But I'm starting to think that he might be a pretty overrated actor on these boards.
And how the heck did Kiera Knightly beat the wonderful Scarlett Johanssen in the breakthrough performance category? I like Knightly and think she has a good future for herself but Johanssen is SOOO much better.
And how does the Matrix sequals win the most overrated film of the year award when most people were either disappointed or even hated them? I, however, personally loved them.
And the two movies I don't consider to be underrated win the award for the most underrated movie of the year. I'm of coarse talking about Identity and Phone Booth. I still fail to see how they are underrated when everyone liked them alot.

In my honest opinion I would of liked to see a bit more varitiy in the awards. It's a little boring to see LOTR getting almost everything. I knid of felt people where voting JUST because it was LOTR. There where alot better trailers and posters out there this year IMHO.
Also the My Name Is Buck and I love To Fuck line isn't very original, it's been done before.

LOTR wins the most awards. What a surprise. These awards were as predictable as the Golden Globes. Lets hope the Oscars adds a little excitement.
Penn was so much better than any actor out there this year so much so that no body holds a candle to his amazing preformance not even the all great Bill Murray who wasnt that good!!!!! But Depp winning was kind of a shock coz i thought Murray would win. Anyway Sean Penn deserves every award he can get and if he doesnt get the Oscar then something is terribly wrong.

I hoping Kingsley would be nominated here with the Schmoes, and I really hope that he can pull off a big upset in two weeks, but if it came down between Penn and Murray I have to go with Penn.

Penn's performance in mystic river has been hailed by the new york tribune, i one of the greatest acting performances in 25 years, and i couldn't agree more. Its almost too good. Everything that man did on mystic river, was ten times better then Johnny Depp in POTC. Deep is amazing actor and much loved by the schomes on this board, but Penn is probably the greatest actor of his generation.

I don't get why LOTR: ROTK got best trailer. The trailer wasn't that good or exciting (in my soon to be shot down opinion).
I thought the Matrix trailers were kick ass. I know a lot of people didn't like the movies, I thought they rocked; but you got to admit that their trailers were freakin' awesome.
