A.K.A The Return Of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre .
I've been in a chainsaw mood recently . With the current remake ( which I loved ) and my new purchase of the 18" Leatherface figure so I decided to give this fourth sequel another try .
I'd only seen it once when it first came out and had'nt liked it .
So I purchased a copy for £5.00 and settled down to give it a second chance .
Thank Christ it only cost a fiver !
It's even worse than I remembered it . No wonder Renne and Matt are so embarresed . Nothing to do with being in a low budget horror movie , more the fact that it's mind numbingly bad .
Leatherface is pathetic . He comes across as nothing more than a bumbling retard , and what the hell was that all about with the guy in the Limo ......... oh ! I can't go on , can anyone else ?

It IS pretty sucky. Watchable, but sucky. Thanks to director KIM HENKEL (he was involved in the original - can't remember how though) it's virtually a carbon copy of the THE TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE.
However, I haven't seen the 2nd or 3rd yet. Up until recently they haven't been available in the UK. In fact PART 3 LEATHERFACE still isn't, but soon will be I hear! YAY!

A floundering apery of the original. Why did Henkel believe this to be a sound idea? It embarrasses itself at every opportunity. The "nods" to the first film are just lazy (the meat hook scene, in particular, lacks punch), Leatherface isn't menacing in the slightest, and I detested the "next generation" of truculent rednecks. Joe Bob Briggs has touted TCM4 as being the best horror film of the '90s. I love the guy and all, but...wow.

Just noticed your fave movie is the original TCM. How did you feel about the remake?

One of those great unintentionally funny horror films. With Mathew's robotic leg and the bad guy with the multiple nipples and Leatherface in drag this is defintely a what-the-hell film. Im pretty sure they were smoking pot while making this. It makes no sense and its insane.
Watch for the quick shot of what looks to be dead grandpa suddenly coming alive and getting up from the table. You never seen him again and it has nothing to do with anything. Waaaaaaaa.

For some reason I've been able to sit through this flick a handful of times.. it almost feels like a giannnt practical joke on Henkel's part.
Seriously, if he were in on the claaaaassic original from ground zero, you'd think he'd want to make something worthwhile?! Nope! My guess would be that he had it shelved for a while out of shame, then released it to cash in on some Matthew McConaugh-fame(sorry.. I reallly am!).
the "stick beating" scene I looove. The idea of a Sawyer trying to kill someone with a twig is just kind of ridiculous...

Is it through fear of thinking the remake shits on the original the reason you haven't seen it?! Or have you just not got around to it?!!I'm not the biggest fan of the original but I do have it on vhs and special edition dvd, and regard it as an obligatory and vital part of my collection. Whether or not people love this film, it has its place in horror history. It IS a classic.
My point is, I LOVED the remake. Thought it was fantastic. Give it a try, you MIGHT be surprised. But don't HATE me if you think it BLOWS. lol

Thought I'd throw my two cents in here .
I LOVE the original . It's in my all time top five horror movies .
I also loved the remake . I was extremely surprised and shocked when I saw it and found myself completely caught up in it's modern take on a classic theme .
Do'nt get me wrong , I still prefer the original but the remake is just about as good as any remake could have been if not better .

Couldn't have put it better myself bro. Wasn't expecting too much apart from the witty SCREAM style characters acting way too intelligently for their own good and getting themselves out of increasingly difficult situations way beyond our belief!!! Even though it was OTT, it had an air of believability about it. That's what made the kills raw and shocking.
I can't wait for the dvd release.

And surprisingly didn't pull any punches with its violence, which impressed me (and made two girls leave feeling ill the first night it was shown at the cinema where I work)... interesting range of reactions from the various audiences while it was showing too!
TCM 4 shades the first sequel in terms of badness, but only because a horrifically bad Dennis Hopper is still better to watch than fairly bad Renee/Matthews and the print still looks great...

I just haven't gotten around to it. I certainly don't fear that it dethrones the original.

I absolutely hate this movie. Right from the beginning, it has a bad vibe and it doesn't get any better. It just gets worse, and worse, and worse...This is one of VERY BOTTOM movies on my "hate" list. The only other movie that is about equally bad as "TCM 4" is "The Hills Have Eyes." Before I saw part 4, TCM 2 was one of my most hated films. Now, I'd probably be more generous with part 2. You know, this is actually one of those films that is worse to watch than "Battlefield Earth." Yeah, I'd rather watch "Battlefield Earth" 10 straight times than watch TCM 4 one time.

You're talking about the remake right ? Not the abomination that is Part 4 .

WHen watching this movie, you get the urge to divert your eyes, hold your hands over your ears and save yourself from the traumas of piss poor filmmaking it holds.. but you can't. Amazingly bad yet entertaining horror sequel. Matty owns this flick.
I MUST get this one on Dvd!

I actually kinda like this movie in a way.
To me it`s at least better than Part 3 (which I really disliked).
It does have a genuine 'crazy vibe' to it that I like.

Spoilers!!!!!!!
Has anyone figured out the ending with the weird governemtn guy who opens up his shirt and rescues Zellwegger in the limo and has weird nipples.
I really think the makes of this film were high when they made this. I mean a robotic leg thing.

I have no clue what the hell that government guy was all about. I think that whole part should`ve been left out.

The released version was crap. If you can find the Japanese LD version released long before it was in the US, see that.
It fills in a lot of the gaps - and they have the hook scene back (ouch!)

Kim Henkel wrote the screenplay for the first TCM along with Tobe Hooper, Henkel also produced the flick. Him working hand to hand with Tobe on the first should have been a good omen for this flick, instead the film turned out to be just a rehash of the original and a bad one at that.

Yeah that's the boy! You would've thought it would've been a good omen, so yeah I don't know what went wrong! But I guess they got the original exactly how they wanted it and HENKEL was too scared to stray too far, without realising it was virtually the same.

Just because they're A-list actors now, Matthew and Renee really have no room to be talking when it comes to this movie. Their acting skills weren't worth a damn here, especially Renee's.
As for my critique of the film, yeah, it IS kind of a "what the hell??" film, but I really didn't think it was as bad as some of you all did. I mean, a lot of stuff happening didn't make a lot of sense, I will agree there, but there are some pretty cool chase scenes with Renee's character. And personally, I always found it humorous to poke a little fun at Lisa Newmyer's (Heather) acting. She's just so ridiculously bad, it's funny. I'm a big fan of the TCM series, so yeah, I'll give this one a thumbs up as well. Although, it doesn't hold a fucking candle to the original. I'm sure we can ALL agree there.

I lost interest once I found out Leatherface was just a glorified transvestite. Or the fact that the film just plain sucked. . .
