I just saw that ESPN isn't bringing back Playmakers. What a bunch of bullshit. In spite of the fact that it was one of the highest rated cable shows ESPN backed down from the NFL.
I mean really who thought the show was a 100% accurate depiction of an NFL team? (well maybe of the cowboys, but thats it) It was a freaking tv show and a good one at that. But no the overly sensitive sobs over at the NFL wouldn't stand for it. THey likely threatened ESPN from now renewing their contract when it expires with ESPN over the show.
Come one NFL...it was only a nipple and this is only a tv show. Get a life.

I just posted this in the "Road to the Super Bowl" thread. I am equally upset about this as you, bmain. "Playmakers" was one of my favorite new TV shows, and not bringing it back is a crime. Once again another reason why the NFL really stands for the No Fun League.

Well, I actually don't care about this news either way. I never watched the show, and it looks like I never will. But I will admit that the NFL are pathetic losers for making such a big deal about a TELEVISION SHOW.....

I am kind of glad to hear this news.
1. I didnt think Playmakers was all that good of a show, though it was amusing in an unintentional sort of way
2. I really dont like the idea of ESPN broadcasting TV shows anyways. I want sports 24 hours a day. That means no sit-coms and no reality 'I wanna be a sports anchor' shows. If they dont stop this trend, in a few years ESPN could become the MTV of sports TV (ie NO SPORTS!)

I don't get ESPN and there isn't a station in Canada that's showing it so I'venever seen the show or heard about it until watching PTI yesterday and didn't know what the heck it was.

I'd hate to see it go the way of MTV. I've never seen the series Playmakers so I wont miss it. The only series I want to see them bring back on ESPN would be the 1970's basketball drama The White Shadow.:D

I agree with those fearing ESPN would go the way of MTV. I even refused to watch Playmakers at first. However, I watched it once when nothing was on and was sucked right in.
Anyways I'd rather see them run things like Playmakers instead of Women's professional bowling (and Womens sports in general), the World Series of Poker for the millionth time (I love it, but damn they are playing it way too much), and Billiards tournaments not involving the Dragon Lady.

They had the Summer of George episode of Seinfeld the other night where he plans to spend the whole summer sitting around and doing nothing. Anyways he got excited when he found The White Shadow on TV.

I forget if it was on PTI or Around the Horn yesterday, but they were saying that it wasn't until the NFL opened its mouth about Playmakers early on that the show started garnering the higher ratings. Similar stuff happened with Al Franken's book and Fox News regarding Franken's use of "Fair and Balanced" in his title. His book shot up to #1 on the NY Times Bestseller list.
When are organizations going to realize that when you are opposed to something, just ignore it and it will go away. For a comedic example, watch the episode of the Simpsons when the advertisements came to life. Just Don't Look!!

As long as Around The Horn, PTI, and Rome Is Burning is on the air it's all gravy.

I admit i don't like the idea of ESPN showing dramas instead of other shows. But damn i really liked Playmakers. Yeah the stole sport happenings but who cares. It made it just as interesting. I mean it was kinda like being there back stage w/the players. Another thing playmakers gave me was even more love for NFL...well untill the NFL cancelled the fuckin show. But hey i'll live on

Hmmm, I have mixed feelings on the issue. Personally, I don't much care because I had only seen a few episodes and had found them to be only mildly entertaining, but, even with that said, I understand the show had its core audience.
I am happy because based on principle alone, I don't want to see a scripted program on ESPN to begin with. I would much rather a show such as this be left to one of the cable stations such as HBO, Showtime, etc. I believe ESPN should stick to covering sports, not creating shows on it. (The ol' MTV doesn't show enough videos argument).
On the other hand, I am not thrilled that ESPN bowed to pressure from the NFL to remove a program that was deemed to be offensive to some. Basically it was offensive to those that wished to make money from the NFL. Any common fan knows that the issues dealt with on the show are commonplace in the NFL (and most pro and college leagues for that matter). Given that, it was somewhat informative for the common fan. Somewhat of a companion-piece to Sportscenter, if you will.
Regardless, I don't think it should have been there to begin with... but since it was.... there was no reason to get rid of it.
