Which is the best film in your opinion? I like Apocalypse Now because it is more of a film about the human psyche than the actual war itself, but FMJ has certain moments which delve into the Psychological effects of ther war (The full metal jacket scene, and the sniper scene). Also it's fairly easy to criticise Apoc Now because it's not as fast paced as FMJ. Both films have some quality lines though:
FMJ:
'Texas?! only two types of people come from Texas; Steers and Queers, and boy you aint no steer'
'What you're looking at here is a prime piece of Alabama black Trouser Snake'
Apoc Now:
'I love the smell of napalm in the morning'
'If Kurtz's story is a confession, then in a way so is mine'
For me to say which film is better is a tough choice, if i had to score each out of ten i'd give both 10, but i think that because of the filmography, and the intelligence behing Apoc Now that it is a slightly better flick.

I much prefer Full Metal Jacket.
Apocalypse Now was beautifully filmed, there's no doubt about that, but i found it dragged and was ultimately a boring film for me.

2 thirds of Apocalypse Now are good. but when they finally get to Kurtz, it goes down hill.

Full Metal Jacket by far.
Apacolypse Now was waaay too slowly paced for my taste, it's still a good movie that everyone should see at least once though.

Apocalypse Now easily. Apocalypse is my all time favorite war film, and while the first half of Full Metal Jacket is just awesome, once we get out of the boot camp and the two most interesting characters are gone, the film goes downhill fast until the very end.

They're both good films. Apocalypse Now has more depth in my opinion. I'm going to say Apocalypse Now.

I really have trouble thinking of any more intense movie moment than the full metal jacket scene. Even now it gives me chills.

I agree, Full Metal Jacket did have its moments, but I reckon Apocalypse is the better movie.
"the horror.....the horror"
I had a real asshole English prof in college who felt anything after the 19th cent. is crap, so just to piss him off I paralleled Apocalypse Now with the novel Heart of Darkness for my final presentation. Everyone in the class loved it, especially my side comments about drug abuse on the set and the video clips I showed. Feel free to steal this idea for any upcoming presentations.
A movie I can watch over and over would be FMJ, but, if I want to go there, I prefer Apocalypse Now. I never thought slow pace, I just felt the tension kept building. And you can't go wrong with a young, hot Martin Sheen.
