 It' been awhile since I've posted anythng on this forum, let alone a new thread. My chosen field is the movies, so I've been busy trying to become a real film critic. One who actually gets paid. After checking sports, I don't believe anyone has addressed the subject I,m about to discuss. If someone has already, I apologize.
If you have been watching the news, you,ve probably heard about the rape scandal that the University of Colorado has gotten itself engrossed in. It involves the luring of top athletes through wild alcohol drenched parties- and sex. According to news sources, Colorado Governor Bill Owens has demanded that CU leaders come clean on this scandal and take significant steps if the allegations are true.
Well, first of all, I hope the governor, CU's Board of Regents and university president Betsy Hoffman are not ignorant to the fact that their school is not the only institution of higher learning which engages in this practice. Wild parties and sexual favors are common recruiting tools in colleges across this country. The difference in this case is- it ended in a bad way. Someone decided to blow the whistle.
UT alum Erin Zammet writes about this in an article titled "The Sweet Life Of Jocks." It's in the October 2001 issue of Playboy. She reveals some very interesting things such as one girl who, one by one, slept with the entire starting defensive line of the Univ of Rhode Island football team.(She never yelled rape one time). Plus deals that go down between deans coaches and even boosters who encourage their daughters to "socialize" with players as part of the recruiting process.
Spike Lee(back to my chosen field-the movies) illlustrates this in his film "He Got Game". If you've seen it, I know you remember those two luscious, tantalizing co-eds, Susie and Buffy that Rick Fox introduced Ray Allen to in the dorm. They gave him the time of his life. And I'm sure ther are plenty of voluptuous female college students just like them who are always ready to "persuade" a potential star player into enrolling. Especially if it means winning a championship.
If anyone has experienced this "sweet life" or knows anyone else who has, I'd like to know. It' always amazing what we as Americans will do to win.

An Iowa college coach was suspended for sleeping with a coed from the University of Missouri while in Columbia with his team for the MU game.

I know many colleges have been involved in such shady dealings as promising pretty girls, money under the table, good grades, etc. However, rape is a serious crime. Now six students who attended the University of Colorado have come forward and admitted to being raped. As for Ms. Hoffman, she fervently denied the whole thing at first, but is now backing down more and more as these allegations continue to surface. I think she realizes that this is a real problem. And it needs to be taken seriously. That coaches and recruiters are using sex, money, etc. as recruiting tools is disgraceful enough. That girls are being outright raped is not only a crime, but it should get the players arrested, convicted if guilty, and jailed. Anyone involved in these shady recruiting schemes should be afraid for their jobs now, because that may very well happen next.

I am holding off commenting on this issue until I finish the research for a law review article I am writing. Though I would love for more people to give their opinions on this subject, especially those coming from other countries.
