View Full Version : OPEN WATER
I read about this in a recent issue of Entertainment Weekly, and MAN DOES IT SOUND GREAT! Sounds like a sleeper hit! It's supposed to be scary as hell! Entertainment Weekly said that this was the most terrifying shark movie ever, even more chilling than JAWS (It won't be hard for it to be better than Jaws ;)). And what makes it even scarier is that they used real sharks.
CAN'T WAIT for this one!

So this isn't a sequel to the brilliant Open Range?

This does sound pretty sweet. There's a picture and a link to a clip right here,

Sounds great. Jaws wasn't very scary though, maybe back then, but not now.

Yeah, this sounds quite sweet. I think I'm the only one in here who really liked Deep Blue Sea, but this sounds so much more humanistic.

I also read the review in EW...although it was by Owen "King of Hyperbole" Gleiberman, I'm still fairly intrigued by this odd experiment.
Hey, I also like Deep Blue Sea! :D
I also liked Deep Blue Sea, it was better than Jaws. But this sounds better than both of them.

Deep Blue Sea gives me bad bad memories. Still this looks to be genuinely chilling and an interesting experiment

Better than Jaws...BAH!
It could possibly turn out to be an Indie Blockbuster but I don't think it'll swoop the public moviegoers off their feet.
But seriously, Deep Blue Sea better than Jaws?

I'm interested. Also curious if it will be scarier than JAWS (which although not being creepy IMO, still was an excellent film).

It looks like an effective low budget effort that is based on an actual experience , but , you knew there had to be one , i'm not so sure it will hold my interest for it's entire running time .
A 90 minute film about people being terrorized by sharks , just doesn't appeal to me anymore , although i admire the effort that went into making this ( i can watch something similar to this on the Discovery channel without the melodramatics ) . From what i've read , there are no special effects , or maybe only a minimal use of , so i give them credit on the production side of this creation , and it should be a nice little hit for everyone involved .

I liked Jaws a lot when I was a kid. Then I saw it again with my cousin in September of 2002, and it wasn't that great at all. It was pretty uninteresting and overrated. I don't think it holds up anymore. Deep Blue Sea is nothing great, but it is entertaining, much more than Jaws.
Creature Corner has info about a clip from the film that's surfaced: http://www.creature-corner.com/news4/feb10openwater.php3
If that picture they show is the poster for the movie, that's ONE FUCKING MINT POSTER! Please let that be the poster and let it stay like that, because that's one I want hanging on my wall.

It is a pretty nifty poster, but I don't think it gets the point across. I mean, that don't look like no horror film from here!
Beautiful nonetheless.

I don't think Deep Blue Sea is a better movie than Jaws, but it's definitely a more enterteining one. I rather watch Deep Blue Sea again than Jaws.

Well, the sharks on it might be some indication that it's a horror/thriller.

My expectations just sank a bit after checking out that clip . The dialogue is awful , and the acting seems even worse .
Maybe OW has trumped Blair in the difficulty of production department , but it doesn't look like they have in the performance or improv realm . I got Baywatch flashbacks watching that little clip , complete with the Larry Storch school of acting vibe .
If the only " cheap " trick the director utilized to spice things up , is to throw some chum in the water to attract some real life sharks while his hapless performers got all terrified , then i don't see this film doing that much for me .
No matter , i wouldn't have done it , but keep in mind , " facts " about the production are all part of the marketing , and it's a way to get distributors all excited , they have to make the film seem as if it was more dangerous to film than it really was .
Should be good , but after that clip , i'm going to be wishing the sharks show up and silence the two bickering spouses .

What are you, Fucking MAD? Jaws is a great film that if anything is underrated these days. It, even before Star Wars, changed the way films are made. Hell, the term Blockbuster was coined for Jaws. It had great atmosphere, at the time great FX, and still one of the best ensemble casts that Steven Speilberg has worked with. Deep Blue Sea was an OK time killer, but Jaws is the king baby.
That said, Open Water looks intereting, and seeing as I love sharks I wll have to see this in theatres. Where is that Meg adaptation when you need it?

I personally disagree. I find it to be overrated. I don't hate it, but I don't care for it either. It was uninteresting --- boring, especially the part on the boat where they're talking. I could care less what they were saying. For a suspense movie, it sure doesn't have any. I liked it a long time ago, but it doesn't work for me anymore. I don't think it has aged well.

The Scene where Quint delivers his speech about the USS Indianapolis is one of the greatest scenes in film history. I want to just throttle you!:) Oh well, I guess I gotta respect your opinion, but... "You know that was when I was most scared. Waiting...for my turn. I'll never put on a life jacket again."

Sorry, but I just didn't dig it as much as you. Glad you liked it though, and thanks for respecting my opinion. :)

RELEASE PLAN FOR OPEN WATER
2.12.04
By Ryan Rotten
Contributing Sources: Fangoria
Here's a quick little update on Open Water - the indie sensation about a couple alone, unprotected, floating in an area of the ocean inhabited by sharks.
Fangoria has learned that Lions Gate, who picked up the film for distribution, is eyeing May 21st for a release in Los Angeles and New York. From there the Gate will unleash the film on 2,000 theaters June 11th. The head honchos at the Gate obviously see this as a film that can compete with the heavy hitters of this summer.

This movie looks pretty cool. It seems like it will have that Blair Witch-esque documentary style to it.
Prediction Rating: 8/10 - I'll be checking this one out
As for the "Deep Blue Sea"/"Jaws" debate, personally I think "Jaws" is more well-made but "Deep Blue Sea" has the entertainment factor that "Jaws" just DOESN'T. "Jaws" is kinda entertaining parts but it can be REALLY boring. "Deep Blue Sea" is never boring!

Still only mildly interested in a 90 or so minute film with two people arguing while sharks circle them looking for a meal maybe .
I do have to admit , it has breakout hit written all over it , and it's being released around the time people in the northeast usually start to head to the beach again .
I imagine this is a film that will be much more effective on the big screen , with a bunch of easily scared females in attendance .

Movie may look 3rd rate but seeing 2 people stranded in the middle of nowhere makes a pretty good movie I think....

These psychotics , supposedly filmed in shark infested waters , and i emphasize supposedly because that could be the marketing department up to their ol' hijinx . If they did , these guys and gals get high marks for taking a bit of a chance in order to secure an authentic feel .
No way would i have done something like this . I'll suffer in the woods for 7 days , but i'm not swimming in an ocean for more than 5 minutes if i think there are sharks around . One fin breaking the surface of the water would be enough to make me lose my lunch .

The film looks excellent. I already have a hard time going into the water because of JAWS, this'll just worsen that fear.
As for the Deep Blue Sea/JAWS debate, they shouldn't even be compared. One film is a shark driven action piece, the other a character driven piece that happens to have a shark in it. If you don't care for the characters in JAWS, then I question what more do you need. The three main characters had the best chemistry I have ever seen on screen.
