If you could pick just ONE movie (pre-1960s) that you could call the greatest movie ever made, what would it be?
My choice-
CASABLANCA

I know! This is one of my favourite movies of all time. It has so many classic lines ("here's looking at you kid" and "play it sam" quickly come to mind) and has some of the best and most timeless performances ever (bogart, bergman, rains, henreid etc.).

"Vertigo"- the riskiest piece of storytelling in Hitchcock's career; slow, morbid, romantic, unforgettable

Apocalypse Now was 1979, Ran was 1985.

I'll go with the Dr. on the U.S. films, Citizen Kane and The Third Man (Though Third Man is actually British I believe)

Foreign I'd go with Rashomon and La Strada, and if it can be 1960, La Dolce Vita.
