Ho-ly shit. I almost crapped myself when I first say this review on DVD Basen (http://www.dvd-basen.dk/uk/home.php3). This is the ORIGINAL, not the remake, guys. The DVD is being released to coincide with the remake of DOTD, but also to tide fans over before the 3-disc version comes out later on in the year. Check out the review here at DVD Maniacs (http://www.dvdmaniacs.net/Reviews/A-D/dawn_2004.html).

This release is horse-shit. Fuckin make up your mind, three disc, or no. Don't ship out a DVD for us all to buy, and then expect us to buy the "good one" six months later too.

I'll be hanging onto my Director's Cut VHS until Fall.

You do have to take into consideration that they wanted to release this to coincide with the remake's release, but they weren't finished with the other cuts and extras. Considering that instead of rushing and doing the whole thing half-assed, they did the best thing they could do: release the US cut with a commentary, trailers, TV spots and some other small stuff. I think that if this disc is going to be released again in that 3-disc set, then I'll pass, unless they put the other cuts in that set and leave the US cut contained to this release.

Umm, I have no idea what I'm going to do about this yet. Really, it's quite a dillema. I can't wait to own this flick on DVD but I don't wanna have to buy the damn thing twice.

Releasing it to coincide with the remake is a good excuse for making one version available now , and another around 6 months from now ( Halloween ? ) , but i guess if it boosts sales , like the Chainsaw remake did , for Dawn dvd , then why not , Romero should get something out of it , even if it's in an indirect way .

I still don't feel any reason to buy the first offering , except for the extras ( could always rent it to get that fix ) , because i've seen it so many times , 6 more months won't damage me in any way . And by that time , i imagine the remake will also be available , it will be nice to see them both in the same night or the same day , or whatever .

I see the extremely impatient and the curious who have never seen Dawn , buying the March release , all others will hold on to their duckets and wait for the superfanboy deluxe edition . Or at least they should .

Anchor Bay has been a fan's DVD producer for a pretty long time. If they decide for the 3-disc set to have the other cuts not including the US cut then I would buy both. Plus, this looks to be a pretty sweet transfer.

As for TCM, Pioneer should be reprimanded and bitch-slapped for their new 'Special Edition' DVD of the original TCM. It's the exact carbon copy of the original DVD that they released 4 years ago in every way, including the piss poor transfer. I can't believe I bought this DVD, but considering I missed out on it before, it's not a total loss. I'll review it sometime down the road.

This is a classic case of milking the consumers dry, but at least it's a slightly more affordable alternative for those who won't be going out of their way to buy the 3-disc set. I probably won't buy either release. Dawn is solid, but I'm not nearly as passionate about it as most gore guzzlers are.

I always thought Dawn was the wrong film to buy if you were a "gore guzzler". The gore in it is quite intense at times, but its few and very far between. It's divided equally, and through much of the film is just that kind of dramatic element of the life and times of living in a shopping mall.

It's just too long of a film to keep most gore hounds interested in waiting the next 45 minutes for some innards, in contrast to an actual gorefest like Day of the Dead, or Cannibal Ferox.

Plus it depends on the cut, when you think about it. I personally wouldn't go for Cannibal Ferox, seeing as it's a little too heavy in terms of the exploitation for me, and because it reminds me of Cannibal Holocaust and it's killing of real animals, which is a definite no-no in my book. I'll stick with Zombi 2, thank you.

The dvd looks cool but I think I'll wait for the 3-5 disc set and get all the versions and extras. It would be worth waiting an extra six months and paying more money.

I didn't mean to imply that Dawn of the Dead was strictly for gorehounds. "Gore guzzler" is a term that I'll use on occasion when referring to horror fans. I know that not every genre junkie is bedazzled by blood, but it's just gratuitous alliteration (which, if you'll notice, I'm quite fond of).

Yes , it's been incorrectly marketed as a gorehound's paradise , but , the gore is only one of it's narrative tools , meant to convey the hell that the survivors existed in , it's not exploitative , even if it may seem too brutal , it's not meant for tittilation .

Sometimes , it's not a pretty world , it's rare a director can illustrate that fact as Romero has done with Dawn of the Dead , with such insight , compassion , grace , and honesty .

Well all I have to say is I'll probably end up getting both editions. I watch Dawn more than I do Night or Day. (both excellent.) I'ma sucka!

You have a good point there , you can never have enough versions of this enduring classic , somehow a horror lover's life won't be complete without every imaginable " official " release in their possesion , and that includes the Thorn EMI video vhs release , the very first Dawn release in the states , and the one that hooked me on horror for good ( i only dabbled in it until i watched that video release ) .

But don't get too crazy , unless you really are that obsessed with Dawn , i would pick my spots . Who am i kidding , it's hopeless , you can't wait , and neither can i , i have to buy both dammit . Guess i have to pad Romero's retirement fund , or hopefully his final film , Twilight of the Dead .
