THE LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING is the most epic and spectacular movie I've ever seen in a movie theatre, I know that much.
Then again I'm only 20.
Others I can think of: TITANIC, BRAVEHEART, RAN, GONE WITH THE WIND, BEN-HUR...

Nothing can touch Gone with the Wind in my mind. The grandest, greatest movie ever made!
But these are all pretty spectacular in their own right:
Lawrence of Arabia
Dr. Zhivago
Cleopatra (Cleopatra's entrance to Rome has to be of the grandest scenes ever filmed; it was just )
Ben-Hur
Titanic
Return of the King
