A tale of 2 sisters is great if you have a region free player. If not check out Azumi. It's not so much horror as it is kick ass action.

If you like weirdness and amazing camera movements I recomand you any films from Tsukamoto ( Tetsuo, Tokio Fist, Bullet Ballet, Geminin, Hiruko: The Goblin )

Otherwise I would say Cure ( Kurosawa ) Ringu, Battle Royale, Tell Me Something ( a korean thriller à la Se7en, warmly recommanded )

Kaïro really got me. Very slow paced and subtle, but very effective.

And Ringu and Dark Water, some of Hideo Nakata's finest work.

I'll try to stay away from the obvious too (Uzumaki ;) ) but I'd say check out St. John's Wort, Kichiku, Don't Look Up, Tomie, Kakashi (killer scarecrows!!), Visitor Q, Freeze Me, the All Night Long trilogy, Ju-on (ok, a bit mainstream now I guess), the Men Behind the Sun series (watch out. Extreme!), the Guts of a Beauty trilogy, the Evil Dead Trap trilogy, Human Skin Lanterns, The Killer Snakes, Devil's Fetus, Seeding of a Ghost. etc. etc. etc. etc.

Don't forget the Wicked Ghost trilogy:

The second and third films are a bit shite-looking, but the first one's pretty damn good.
