The genre including bands like Staind, Nickleback, 3 Doors Down, Limp Bizkit's "Behind Blue Eyes", etc. Like not too hard, usually sad songs.
Please don't say "Shitty music". :)

Basically all I can think of is Modern Rock. I was going to say Nu Metal, but neither Nickleback or Three Doors Down would fit into that. Other bands would include Creed, Tantric, Default, Lifehouse, and Matchbox Twenty

I always think of it as Popular Rock.
Its the kind of think I put on for relaxation.

Isn't Alternative and Modern Rock essentially the same thing?

Those bands are not emo.
Emo is short for 'emotional'. These bands are clearly not that, they are sell-outs and rather un-talented musicians.
They are more modern rock like people mentioned before.

I hate to put things into genres, but I think the category of modern rock or nu-metal is like any other category of music. There's good music, and then there's shit music. Some of the above mentioned bands have at least some level of talent, others are packaged and sold and are one step above a boy band. I'm not naming any names here <coughs*staind*coughs>, but I'm not really about dissing people just because they fit a certain category. I'll be the first to admit that I actually liked a Creed song or two, and 3 Doors Down and Tantric are very cool bands. It's all about listening to everything and making your own decisions about what you like and what you don't.
