A lot of people/critics consider 'Vertigo' Alfred Hitchcock's "masterpiece"... Personally, I don't see why. While 'Vertigo' is a great film, I wouldn't consider it his best. But it's definitely in his top 10...
So I want to know what all of you think... What is Hitchcock's best film.
For me, it's a tie between Rebecca, and Notorious. Though I am going to vote for Rebecca.

My personal fave is The Birds.....I have seen ot 10 X Million times it seems anew to me....
Too bad the intended original ending were the birds swarm over Golden Gate would have been cool.
I also like Rear Window. Very spell binding and the ending!
North By Northwest was pretty good too also!

Rear Window was flawless.
Of course, Psycho is granted immunity from insults by most fans, because it was a "ground breaker" and a "standard setter" for slasher films. That's like saying I owe a constant tribute to the five dollar whore that took my virginity. No.
Rear Window was the better film, and Hitchcock's comments about the creation of that should be taken into context for today's Stephen King/LOTR/Harry Potter/Book must be word for word in the movie types.
Paraphrasing of Hitchcock:
"One takes the book. One reads the book. One sets the book aside. One makes the film."
Weird guy, but great words I must say. He understood that film and literature are TWO different sources of media, and treated them as such.
Changes such as making Jimmy Stewart a photographer, and casting Grace Kelly instead of a middle aged house servant were genius.

My answer is kind of weird. I consider his masterpiece to be psycho, but my favorite from him is Rear Window.

How do you choose?
Im going with the original slasher Psycho. Im drawn to the slasher and this laid the groundwork ever since. Yet he has had many a fantastic film that had me on the edge of the my seat. Rear Window was fantastic, North by Norhtwest...well what hasnt been said about that film?
Countless movies that I enjoy by this man and I only with I could rant for an hour about each one.

Rebecca
In my top 10 of all time, and the greatest Hitchcock movie. Psycho, Rear Window, Vertigo, North By Northwest, Notorious are ALL flawless but Rebecca is his masterpiece, no doubt.
It's dark, gothic, dream like atmosphere is haunting but beautiful, frighteningly similar to a dreamy, soothing melody with a dark tone. Great setting, as well as a climax that defines the intensity of all thrillers. The script is perfectly written, and the kickass ensemble cast makes it even better. Laurence Olivier is at his moody, dramatic type role again, the one he's always good at, and needless to say he's incredible here. Joan Fontaine, however, is the real star and wins the audience's sympathy with her endearing, honest performance. But of course, who can forget the frightening Mrs. Danvers, played wonderfully by Dame Judith Anderson.
And then, there's the second half of the film that ties in with the beauty of the first half, creating not only a climatic mystery, but an intense psychological thriller, with an emotional character study of a character who NEVER appears on screen. Watching it gives me the chills, but also gives me a feeling of happiness that movies this great can be made. Hitchcock = greatest director ever!

Oh, earlier this year (I'm sure t'was in January). I've looked at my top 20 list a lot and have noticed that Rebecca was ranked way too low, and not having a Hitchcock movie in a top 10 list is a sin on my part. So in consideration of it's masterful direction, script, performances, and every flawless detail, I have put it in my top 10 (# 10).
My favorite Hitchcock films:
1. Rebecca
2. Vertigo
3. Spellbound
4. Psycho
5. Notorious
6. The Birds
7. North By Northwest
8. Rope

Rebecca
It combines everything Hitchcock is masterful at; suspense, eerie settings, GREAT love story, and amazing filmmaking. It is combined perfectly and crafted into one of the greatest films ever made. It isn't an obvious choice to some, but most who have seen it cannot deny the fact that it is AMAZING. It is Hitchcock at his finest.
