I think that 21 Grams was his best performance and that the Oscar should have gone towards that, rather than for Mystic River.

Definitely Dead Man Walking. One of the best male performances of the past 20 years. He was also GREAT in The Falcon and The Snowman, Carlito's Way, Mystic River, Sweet and Lowdown, Hurly Burly, 21 Grams, The Thin Red Line, State of Grace, Fast Times, At Close Range...
The man is fucking brillant.

Dead Man Walking, one of the greatest performance in the history of cinema. It hard to chose with Penn, he's my favorite and imo one of the greatest actors of all time.

Dead Man Walking, followed by 21 Grams and then Mystic River & Hurlyburly. One of the very best actors working today, if not THE best.

Took the words right out of my mouth.
There is no such thing as a BAD performance by this remarkably talented actor. Even in his weakest roles, he wipes the floor with most of hollywood. He is truly an acting genius.

I'm in agreement here. I didn't think his performance in Mystic River was THE best of the year (though it was a fantastic performance, mind you), and he has been in some AWFUL movies (I Am Sam, anyone?) but even in those films, he gives great performances.
But of course, for me, Dead Man Walking walks home with the prize. One of those really moving performances that really brought tears to my eyes.

From the list I would have to pick Carlito's Way; Penn and Pacino have a nice chemistry in that film.
I also want to mention Penn's performance as Nick O'brien in Bad Boys (1983). This is one of my favorite movies of all time so I at least think it should get a little recognition. Very entertaining.

I say Sweet and Lowdown, but I also have yet to see 21 grams. I'm not that big of a fan of Mystic River, everyone had amazing performances but I just don't like the movie, so I'm being biased.
Dead Man Walking, with "State of Grace" coming in 2nd..
Great actor, someone I grew up with moviewise, he's been around quite awhile now. Respect all the way.

It was a very close race between Dead Man Walking and Mystic River...but I gave my vote to Dead Man Walking....Penn is brilliant and one of my favourite actors working today. Let's hope he keeps putting out stellar performances for the rest of his career!

I don't think he's anything special in the way of acting, but I was pretty impressed with him in 21 Grams.

I have to say Spicoli in FTARH, because I can't believe that this guy who spouted such lines like "I'm so wasted!" and "Just learning about Cuba & havin' some food " would become one of the best actors of this generation! I also liked him in Hurlyburly and At Close Range too.

I have to agree that he should have won it for 21 Grams. There was more emotion and ups and downs and real life he had to deal with.
21 Grams is my 2nd favorite movie I have ever seen But...I think his best performance was I Am Sam. Some think it was over acting but I think he took that role and made it his own.

Okay, I just saw Dead Man Walking and I have absolutely no idea why that performance deserves all these accolades.
