I was just curious to see how many of you schmoes like instrumental rock music and which artists or songs you enjoy. A few of my personal favorites include guitar gods like Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, and Eric Johnson, surf music like Dick Dale and The Ventures, as well as jazz rock fusion like Miles Davis. I also enjoy popular artists who do instrumentals as well, like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Rush.

Tell me what you think about these artists and which instrumental pieces/ artists you enjoy listening to.

I much prefer instrumental music to music with lyrics... my band is currently in dispute over this... I don't want lyrics, they do... but I just know that its only a matter of time before yours truly is standing behind a microphone...

You should check out Godspeed You Black Emperor! and Explosions in the Sky. They are post-rock, and are probably the best instrumental bands out there.

I also like Lightning Bolt, but i'm sure no one else does. :D

Joe Satriani is a God among men in this category. I forget the title of the record as of this moment, but the songs on it include: Ceremony and Time.

My god that album is amazing.

Well, as many of the fellow schmoes probably already know, I have to jump on the Satriani bandwagon.

It seems as if he doesn't get enough credit for the studliness that he is. As for the album Crystal Planet, it is a very solid album, with my favorites being Time, Borg Sex, and Until We Say Goodbye.
But by far my most favorite album of his is Joe Satriani Live in San Francisco. It has some of my most favorite songs that he's ever done, and a lot of the live versions are an upgraded version from the original album, such as Borg Sex, Until We Say Goodbye, Flying in a Blue Dream, Summer Song, Mystical Potato Head Groove Thing, or Raspberry Jam Delta V. Plus, the Bass Solo is fuckin' spectacular.

Dream Theater would have to go on my list of loves as well, but time is getting short and I'm paying by the minute here, so I'll shut up and conclude by saying that I prefer instrumental rock more than most rock with lyrics, because there's less bullshit to listen to. It's just the music, and there aren't any lyrics to fuck up what might have potentially been a good song once. ;)

The Dirty three are ace.

Also Brian Eno's ambient stuff is quite beautiful.

Actually KcMsterpce, Borg Sex and Until We Say Goodbye are from the album Engines of Creation. Ceremony and Time are from The Crystal Planet. I enjoy both albums very much, but even though EOC was interesting, I prefer TCP. Which one do you guys like better? Also, does anyone own Strange Beautiful Music and are you looking forward to the release of the new album Is There Love In Space?
