Jump the shark... for those of you who don't know "Jump the shark" was a term used to describe the sitcom Happy Days. Some time in the series run Fonzie put on water skis and jumped over a shark in an outrageous stunt. That was the turning point in the series when many people realized that the show began a downward spiral and started to suck. The term Jump the Shark is now used to describe "a defining moment when you know that your favorite television program has reached its peak. That instant that you know from now on... it's all downhill (thanks to jumptheshark.com for that definition). In this case I am going to be using horror franchises instead of television shows.

So with all that being said at what point do you guys think A NIGHTMARE ON ELM STREET jumped the shark?

Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Freddy's switch to wisecracks. Way to turn a great cinematic villain into a second-rate stand-up comic.

Yeah, I agree that it was probably when he started using crap one-liners frequently. Freddy practically became an American icon after a while - just a crazy guy who invades people's dreams.. But what I liked about Freddy VS Jason was the opening sequence, where it shows Freddy when he was still alive, pre-burning, and he's looking through some photographs of 'missing children' that he's killed, and laughing to himself.. That was much creepier than any of the elaborate dream sequences, as for that moment he wasn't a supernatural villain, but a child abductor, which is more 'real'.

Still, I do like all the NOES films to a certain extent. I've never heard of that Jump the Shark malarkey before, but now I'll make an effort to use it in everyday conversation...!

Nightmare On Elm Street 2. Nothing good about it.

If you want more info on it you can check jumptheshark.com. You can also vote when your favorite shows jumped the shark there. Thats where I got the idea for this thread. No, I am not associated with that site in any way either. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

i picked the one regarding Pt. 5: The Dream Child, only cause I would say thats the declining point in the series as my statistics show that Pt. 5,Freddys Dead and New Nightmare are the 3 worst in the series to me,so it all started with Pt. 5....

The Freddy series of films are actually preatty good, a few bumps here and there but as a whole Id say its one of the best horror franchises...but if I had to say where Freddy started to loose his edge and become unscary lets see...

I dont even count part II as a real sequel cause it broke all the rules waaaay to much and didnt make much sense....so for me everything was perfect until Dream Master came out.

Thats when Freddy stopped being scary in my opinion. That whole scene with Freddy on the beach wearing sun glasses..ugh. I guess thats when he started to loose his edge.

I voted for Freddy's Dead. I actually own it, but only because I bought it for just $2!!! Even the video store didn't want it any more! It was low-rent, B-grade dreck all the way. It might be okay if you're 10....lol.

I'm going to have to go with the very first one, A Nightmare on Elm Street. I've never been a fan of the series or of Freddy himself. The only good one was New Nightmare.

Thank God! I thought "Jump The Shark" was some kind of animal porn. It's definitely when he overused the wisecracks. From then on, I could never talk the guy seriously.

freddy spouting one liners and becoming a running joke when he could have been very creepy

The commercialization of The Dream Master, although I dug all of the films to a certain extent.

For me the Nightmare series "jumed the shark" when Freddy started spewing his one-liners.

I voted for the soundtrack one. Dream Warriors had the excellent Dokken song (love the video), but Dream Master had Freddy rapping (nooooooooooo!!!!!!!!)

The one liners made me lose interest in the series VERY quickly.

I thought the gay undertones in 2 were the most interesting thing about that movie. When they made the character straight in the end it was such a cop out.

Uh, I'm incredibly slow today. Could you tell me just what you need changed?

As soon as I know, I'll have my army of trained rats get right on it...

As for the topic at hand, I enjoy all of the films to a certain extent...except for Freddy's Dead. That was just...awful.

Well I just wanted to change the option of FREDDY entering reality being too ridiculous to read "Never jumped". Thanks much JV. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Freddy becoming a comedian is when the series jumped the shark. I do enjoy both part 3 and part 4, but more on a cheesy 80's level than a good movie level. Luckily New Nightmare was an amazing film that ended the series on a high note for now.

I went with the majority and said wisecracks, but my second choice was probably Tuesday Knight replacing Patricia Arquette.

I just didn't feel Tuesday in the role; it was like Kirsten took an entirely different turn in part four.

True, but I would also say the same for Kincaid and Joey. Whereas in the third one they were a team and stuck together in the fourth they just became your standard dickhead non believing characters. Not a good way to go for storytelling. Well thats all for now GOoD JOURNEY my fellow schmoes.

Freddy's Dead is the only one I technically don't like. I like things about it, and it's ok when you're kinda depressed and in a campy mood at the same time. Otherwise it's pretty much utter shit!
