View Full Version : Frank the Giant Bunny Rabbit

I just saw Donnie Darko, and loved it! Brilliant! I loved Frank especially, I haven't seen a better bunny since the rabbit with sharp pointy teeth in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
And Patrick Swayze's character was great as well (I knew all those do-gooder self help guys were really underground kiddie porn collecters. HA!)
But the ending confused me, someone please explain. How did Grandma Death fit in, Frank the Bunny, the Time Travel stuff?

*MASSIVE SPOILERS*
The entire movie is an allegory on "The Last Temptation Of Christ" (remember this movie is shown in theaters in the 'Double Frightmare'?). In this movie, Satan shows Jesus how the world would be if he decided not to die in the cross. In DD, Frank (Satan?) shows Donnie (Jesus?) How the world would've been if he decided not to die in the crazy accident. Upon seeing the horrible end (Frank, Gretchen, Samantha and his Mom die), he decides to sacrifice himself and die, like Jesus did.
The time travel is all just a way of putting it. Grandma Death is too.
I'm not 100% sure on this but it sounds rational.

Oh, boy. The thing is, Donnie Darko is one of those flicks that involves repeated viewings. Even then, a lot of questions remain. I still don't understand it all myself. If you haven't already, GO OUT AND BUY THE DVD! The DVD has a ton of stuff, including commentary, which helps explain some of the stuff. The most crutial of all the extras involves the deleted scenes, which were cut for time. Unfortunately, a lot is missed with these excised scenes. Hopefully, these scenes (which include commentary) answer some of your questions.

Thank you both. Wow, you two answered this rather quickly.
And X, that synopsis really put it in perspective, the movie makes much more sense now, although I think I will go with Axe's advice and buy the video.

Your welcome and fuck yes you're buying the DVD. If you liked the movie, it's a no brainer. Also, like Axe said above, this involves repeated viewings (the good thing is that DD dosn't stop being great) so GO GET THE DVD . . . and now that I'm controlling you . . . GO GET ME SOME ICE-CREAM . . . and . . . BUY UNDERWORLD!! Err . . . FOUR TIMES!!

Uh . . . back to topic . . .
Listen to the commentary, Red. Apparently Donnie's also a super-hero of sorts when he sleep-walks . . .
And everyone around him is being manipulated by this 'force' (they're being pushed into doing activies/things that'll lead Donnie along his path) . . .
I won't ruin anymore. But I'd definatly give the thing a listen.

If nothing else see it for the giant killer bunny! Just don't try to read that book in the extras section. It gave me a head and eye ache after a few minutes. . .

Why would Satan be showing Jesus how bad things would be if he didn't die?

some spoilers
yo X-N i did a little more research and found that the last temptation was basically about Jesus tryign to figure out who exactly he was and why he was here and what he needed to do. That totally does parallel perfectly. I guess Donnie could be seen as the Juses figure and he could die for everyone or live and let people suffer in sin. and the time travel thing is thrown in there brilliantly just as a way for the plan to work.

i own both donnie darko and the last temptation of christ. i have watch DD several times and LTOC only once. the stories do closely follow eachother, except the end of LTOC got really confusing because theres a lot going on and it jumps back and forth and theres some little girl thats a ghost.
either way it does kinda make sence because the LTOC has nothing to do with halloween or is in any way remotely close to anything horror. so it would make sence. althou i have veiwed both movies i do see some similarities between them.
i had also read that DD was the directors graduation project from film school. supposedly they take parts from all the shorts they had made and throw them together into one script and make a movie.
i still have no idea whats supposed to be happening towards the end of DD, all i know is that the movie is unbelievable (but believable at the sametime) and fucking fantastic. it kicked my ass the first 12 times i saw it, i couldnt stop watching it was so interesting and i wanted to figure out what was going on.
i watched the directors cut of the BUTTERFLY EFFECT last night. i would also recomend this movie to any one who likes DD. i know its gotten some bad reviews but i have only seen the directors cut, not the theatrical cut. (they both come on the dvd)
other psychologic movies recomended: AMERICAN PSYCHO, ALTERED STATES, FIGHT CLUB, IDENTITY.

I think there are really many different ways of interpreting Donnie Darko, but I try to keep myself from seeing any religious messages behind any movies. It would just somehow ruin the movie for me a little (though it also might not). I`m either atheist or pagan and proud of it.

That's a different perspective. I have NEVER heard that one before, but it does make a ton of sense. I had my own theory on it all. After the 3rd time watching it, I felt it was not that hard to figure out. The way you have put it X, is very rational and I also like the idea.
Maybe the Director's cut will put even more into perspective. Such as that deleted scene where the councelor tells the parents the pills are Placebos. I hope to see this upon release. Another thing is, you can kind of know what's going on just by coming up with your own idea of what is happening in the film.
